I want to see Inceptions 2nd weekend over 40 million. That would really impress Excel.

It's purely a trick. Because if he has the highest prediction, and then it doesn't match it, he can give some cockamamie statement that "GUESS PEOPLE HATE THIS MOVIE AFTER ALL. ITS NO PREDATORS. RAWR."

Or he can also attempt "WOW, GUESS YOU ALL REALIZED THIS MOVIE SUCKS AFTER ALL BECAUSE YOU'RE PREDICTING LOW FOR IT. WHAT HAPPENED? ITS NO PREDATORS. RAWR."

Hmm next week will be very interesting. Both Salt and Inception will probably end up hurting each other alot more than people think, but I wouldn't be suprised if it came really close between the two for the number one spot. Both have similar demo appeal for sure, but I still think Salt has the edge because of it's appeal to teen and adult women unlike Inception's mostly adult male appeal. Still you never know because Inception could end up having truly AMAZING WOM next week, but for now I will give the edge to Salt.

1. Salt - $37M
2. Inception - $35M

Inception - $36M
Salt - $33M

Inception should have very strong dailies, which is gonna psyche us all into thinking it will have a $40M+ second weekend. It should come in with a respectful but somewhat disappointing #1 finish. Salt has Jolie going for it and that's about it. No other action movie has broken out this year and I don't expect this to be the first.

From boxoffice - Preview for 'Salt' and 'Ramona and Beezus'
July 18, 2010 03:35 AM by Alex Edghill

Looking ahead to next week's new wide release openers: Salt, and Ramona and Beezus.

Hot on the heels of Inception comes another highly touted original film in Salt, while Ramona and Beezus will attempt to appeal to tween to teen girls.

Tweet totals from July 12th to 15th

Date Movie Mon Tue Wed Thu Total
7/23/10 Ramona and Beezus 340 849 1,144 374 2,707
7/23/10 Salt 1,060 1,059 1,060 951 4,130

Salt is about as generic of a name as I've ever tracked which makes zeroing in on relevant tweets difficult to say the least. The search string in use is "salt movie OR angelina OR jolie OR poster OR trailer OR screening OR film OR flick OR watch OR see" which does a solid job of gathering tweets but many are no doubt left behind by those who are more vague, i.e "Salt this Friday!" or "Excited to catch Salt!". I ran a parallel search for just "Salt" also which turned up 18,000 tweets over the same period. Now that no doubt contains a load of garbage tweets but how much that number increases to next week will also give an idea about the actual figure for the movie assuming that the non-related tweets mentioning "Salt" remain consistent over time. The film attempts to draw in young males, but Jolie should also attract her fair share of young women. Of course its major obstacle will likely be Inception which caters to a similar demographic and will likely hold up very well next weekend.

Comparisons

Date Movie Mon Tue Wed Thu Total
3/12/10 Green Zone 248 260 263 247 1,018
4/2/10 Clash of the Titans 1,232 1,267 1,209 1,278 4,986
5/14/10 Robin Hood 635 597 694 648 2,574
6/04/10 Killers 357 403 441 617 1,818
6/11/10 The A-Team 492 950 962 976 3,380
6/23/10 Knight and Day 528 613 1,396 1,329 3,866
7/16/10 Inception 2,891 5,057 4,585 5,466 17,999
7/23/10 Salt 1,060 1,059 1,060 951 4,130

Inception really blew away most films thanks to its unique name and fanboy driven buzz. Salt will not have the fanboys or easy to narrow down tweets so its ratio will be much lower. Looking at the above list of films, Robin Hood, Killers and The A-Team all had similarly limited search strings and ended up with very similar ratios from 766 to 890. Salt should end up in this range or slightly higher by the end of the week. With these comparisons in mind it appears to be set to open to $35 million plus, with significant upside depending on how it expands next week.

Ramona and Beezus will try to attract the tween audience thanks to the double whammy of Ramona Quimy and Selena Gomez. The Ramona Quimby books have been a stable of young girls for decades now and the film appears to be loyal to the source material. The solid adult cast will also help to spread the appeal to older women as well who also grew up reading the books. The film actually saw a bigger increase than Salt last week with a 145% jump from the week before (Salt was up 85%). This number is about 50% of what The Last Song managed its week before release and three times that of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Selena Gomez is a pretty big star amongst the tween to teen girl crowd not unlike Miley Cyrus' appeal, just at a smaller level of insanity.

Comparisons

Date Movie Mon Tue Wed Thu Total
1/15/10 The Spy Next Door 104 92 93 87 376
1/22/10 The Tooth Fairy 389 425 232 201 1,247
3/19/10 Diary of a Wimpy Kid 253 189 223 199 864
3/31/10 The Last Song 1,387 1,223 1,456 1,578 5,644
5/14/10 Letters To Juliet 323 520 401 1,173 2,417
7/23/10 Ramona and Beezus 340 849 1,144 374 2,707

2,707 is really a very solid number on the week for the film, though it was boosted on Tuesday and Wednesday greatly by a new clip on the film by Selena Gomez's YouTube account. Unlike last week's The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the film has almost zero overlap to the other film opening on the weekend. It has been gathering decent buzz as time has gone on thanks to a combination of smart advertising and also (based on the trailers) a product which does a great job at connecting with young women who are the best free promoters of a film out there. Low to mid double digits appear to be in store which would be a huge win for the Studio which reportedly spent $15 million on the film before marketing.

It's the BKB jinx. It's either gonna drop to like $30 or below... or make like $50 mil.
