I feel that Jumanji is slightly over-estimated but that is an AMAZING hold.

TGS is just MOTHER OF GOD hold again. Its 6th weekend is higher than its first weekend. Just UNBELIEVABLE. $150m is locked up I think $200m is not out of reach at this pace with another holiday weekend coming soon.

Well the excellent January continues unabated. Further excellent holds for Showman and Jumanji + awards contenders making serious coins and other wide release films heading towards solid $40-$60m grosses.

Then you have the openers - both doing well. Maze Runner could have fared worse and Hostiles is a bit of an overachiever.

I thought your possible $200m remark was way too optimistic but looking at the numbers it's actually a decent possibility. I still think it will finish with around $175m or so but $200m could happen if it can keep screens long enough.

Padmaavat is also doing good given the late these and controversy surrounding it. Was it released in IMAX theaters in US? It's distributor is supposed to be IMAX, though we didn't get an IMAX release here in Singapore

Yep. It's will be very close to a multiplier of 10 from its 5-day opening after this weekend. It needs a multiplier less than 9 from here on to get to $200m. It will be difficult but not impossible specially with President day weekend and VD to boost its total for almost 5 days.

Now the question becomes if The Greatest Showman can beat Titanic's multiplier. If it hits $184,734,349 it'll do just that.

It was a Wednesday opener. Needs $200m to match Titanic's 5-day multiplier.

That is such an unfair comparison. TGS opened on a Wednesday AND had Christmas Eve it's opening Sunday. It also opened 3X less than Titanic over the 3 days. Not to take anything away from it, it's drops are fantastic, just saying it's not a fair comparison in this case.

Unless BP really hits it hard, Jumanji should get past $400m mark.

Jumanji ain't getting to $400m. Black Panther and other openers will kill its pace and theatre count before then, and it doesn't need to get to $400m to prove anything. It'll lose steam but could still out-gross Guardians 2.

From this weekend onwards it needs a multiplier of almost 5. I don't think so it's out of reach. Plus it's PTA and gross are huge enough for theaters not to dump it soon.

I'm so, so happy for The Greatest Showman. It's so deserving of being this kind of smash. And I've been checking for its box office numbers every day since opening. What kind of amazing run.

And with no clubs or prediction threads in advance of its release, it was completely off of WOKJ's radar.

Yeah. I think we all just thought it would make $50-$70m and be done.

Not to brag but Algren, David, and I did call it in the Fall Box Office prediction contest with predictions of 130 Million, 140 Million, and 150 Million. But to do this without Oscar nominations is just fucking nuts. Some people probably thought it would get them because it got a few Globe nominations which helped, but then the WOM has really carried this. A lot of people are seeing it more than once. La La Land and this make me wonder why the fuck we don't see musicals a little more often. I mean both doing over 150 Million (I'm just going to assume Showman gets there) is amazing. That's just recently. There's also Les Miserables and Mamma Mia! coming damn close to that total.

You know what Fox could do? Re-release Moulin Rouge in 3D. I don't know how much a 3D conversion would cost but I wouldn't be too shocked if it could approach the 57 Million it made in its initial run. Or at least 35-40. I actually never got to see it on the big screen so I'd go. Though at the same time I'd want them to have a 2D version showing for those who don't wish to see it in 3D.

Anyway I'm getting carried away. I expect the next Mamma Mia! and of course Mary Poppins to be hits. Poppins should do very, very well. Easily 200+. The second Mamma Mia though I'm expecting less than the first for. Valley Girl will be a lesser musical. Probably something closer to Rock of Ages at best. I'm interested for Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day) though, plus it's 80's and I love 80's stuff (but not Rock of Ages surprisingly).
