Post Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (INTL.) - $244.4 million
This might actually just come out as the biggest live action OS grosser to be released domestically in May. Iron Man 2 loks to increase over the predecessor overseas, but not by that much. Robin Hood will suffer from being sandwiched between Prince of Persia and Iron Man 2 and Sex and the City 2's audience is big, but still limited to a certain group.

Prince of Persia seems just like the kind of movie that does okay/good numbers domestically, but really breaks out overseas.

It is being released almost everywhere in the world during the last two weekends of May. What will hurt it, though, is the proximity to the World Cup in South Africa.

However, as I said, this kind of adventure action films almost always does very well overseas. Examples:

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - $298,636,863
Clash of the Titans - $274,800,000 (and counting)
The Mummy - $260,547,918
The Mummy Returns - $230,993,489
Van Helsing - $180,080,391

___________________________________________________________________________

Currently, I'm predicting a $300+ million finish overseas. Though here's a queston to all of you - which movie do you think will perform better overseas: Robin Hood or Prince of Persia?

On the other hand if people DON'T watch the World Cup, Prince of Persia has an open market.

So, it could be a benefit really seeing that almost every June film vacated to July.

Robin Hood is hugely popular folklore in Europe, so I expect it to easily beat POP there. POP will be ahead of RH in asia and south america.

The problem though is that RH looks like gladiator 2 and doesn't actually feel like a true robin hood movie. POP looks ok.

I say RH - $230-250 million
POP - $250-270 million

I'm getting more and more excited about this. Sprawling action/adventure/romance in an exotic setting and time period, such movies are a rarity nowadays. Should be fun even if it turns out a little generic in story and tone.

As for box office, i think it'll edge out Robin Hood, it seems more accessible and fun.

First reviews seem lukewarm as expected. Not terrible, but nothing really good either.

The preview presales are quite solid at theatres around me, but worse than those for Robin Hood.

Also, at least in this area, great weather is expected over the weekend.

I know they are trying to sell it as "from the creators of Pirates of the Caribbean" but it really has got more of a The Mummy feeling to it, if even that. Taking how the Mummy movies played OS and the fact that we have a World Cup coming up into account I don't really think it'll pass $300 million OS unless it gets awesome WOM. Around $250 million seems right about where it might end up at its best if it is like the original Mummy quality wise.

Prince of Persia not doing great in presales for IMAX here. It'll be lucky to get a second week of IMAX screens at this rate.

But is this movie really expected to do well in IMAX anyways ? I mean I know IM2 was pretty big, but thats obviously because it's a sequel and a established property. This is a videogame adaptation and people are probably too catious to spend extra money on something that might not even be worth it. I know I wouldn't after seeing how shitty most of the videogame movies have been so far. It will probably just have to settle with most people seeing it in regluar theatres.

Yeah I wouldnt expect big grosses on IMAX for this. Its less of a pre-sales movie IMO.

Should finish with about US$250 million overseas given the weak Euro.

The film looks generic. The only bright spot is Jake Gyllenhaal playing the muscular protagonist Prince of Persian. It is a make or break performance. His portrayal of the Prince overshadows other aspects of the film. People will be judging the film's success or failure on his performance.

This should be big in China considering the game's popularity there. I personally grew up with it.

Overseas I think Prince of Persia will be way higher since it is more accessible than and with a lot of action sequences running in the trailer I assume more watchable than Robin Hood which though strong is never an action movie

The presales here picked up. The opening will be strong. Could top Robin Hood's.

I don't think we'll get a sequel unless this makes $400+ million worldwide. Even though it migth break even with a bit less they probably want a really strong performance for the first film in a potentiall big franchise like this (since the budget will probably rise for the second film).

Not too unexpected, in Europe I think it'll have a really hard time to beat Robin Hood yes. I wonder how good it'll play out in the Asian markets though.

Apparently it's not doing well in Sweden either. Not a good start.

Judging by 1st day sales PoP should open to about 325,000 admissions (including previews) in Germany - about the same level as IM2...
But nothing is set in stone yet, as the weather patterns are changing...

Biggest openings (excluding previews) in 2010:
1 554.992 712 779 Robin Hood
2 543.814 452 1.203 Alice
3 478.888 628 763 Titans
4 416.024 599 695 Sherlock
5 339.476 473 718 Shutter Island
6 336.777 371 908 Friendship!
7 332.506 512 649 Bounty
8 322.272 633 509 Iron Man 2
9 305.095 426 716 Zeiten ändern Dich
10 300,000 600 500 Persia

Saw it yesterday and the theater was pretty packed. Audience reaction seemed to be pretty positive. I see around 50,000/60,000 adm. for Austria.

The preview I went to was really packed, but now it is doing merely okay at my theatre. Unless the weather changes during the upcoming weeks, it might be looking at a sub-1,000,000 admissions total.

The world cup does not mean death...Da Vinci Code made 540m opening in the same spot and X3 was even closer to the World Cup and was the highest grosser of the series.

from latimes - Overseas, "Prince of Persia" debuted in 19 foreign countries, including Great Britain, Germany and Spain, ahead of its worldwide bow next weekend. It took in a less-than-impressive $18 million, though distributor Walt Disney Pictures noted that the film was hurt by unseasonably warm weather in Western Europe. Its performance in those countries was well below that of several benchmark films noted by Disney, including the original "Iron Man" and the historical epic "Kingdom of Heaven."
