Post The $100+ million movies record was finally beaten!
Shockingly enough, 2003 still holds the record for having the most $100+ million grossers in a year: 29.

Last year it seemed like we could beat it, but because Yes Man fell just short of the mark, we simply tied the record of 2003 with 29 movies. This year, however, we'll DEFINITELY beat it and might set a record that will stand for some time to come too.

Currently we have got 20 movies this year that have reached $100 million:

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Harry potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Up
The Hangover
Star Trek
Monsters Vs. Aliens
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
The Proposal
Fast & Furious
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
Paul Blart: Mall Cop
Taken
Angels and Demons
Terminator: Salvation
G-Force
Inglourious Basterds
District 9
Watchmen

Already released movies that will definitely make it:

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Other locks for $100 million this year:

Avatar
A Christmas Carol
New Moon
2012
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel
The Princess and the Frog
Sherlock Holmes

So that's 28 with absolute locks only!

Other likely/possible contenders:

Paranormal Activity
This Is It
The Fantastic Mr. Fox
Coupleas Retreat
Where the Wild Things Are
It's Complicated
Old Dogs
Up in the Air
Did You Hear About the Morgans
Invictus
The Lovely Bones
Nine

In other words: Up to 40 $100+ million grossrs can happen this year! Of course not all of them will come true, but we're looking at 33-34 at least, I'd say.

If there's any justice in the world, Old Dogs won't make it. It's the worst film I've seen in years.

But there is little justice. Look at this weekend's #1 film.

Couples Retreat can't be worse than Old Dogs. It can't.

I don't think it maters much in these dimensions of badness.

I would consider adding Amelia to that list if it ends up being a big oscar contender.

Yes Man's failure to reach $100m still irks me. Go 2009!! You can do it!

I think that Planet 51 has a great shot as well, especially since it's a 3D friendly film opening a week before thanksgiving.. but also it looks very cute, not unlike cloudy with a chance of meatballs. It could defiantley make it.

There is also the chance that one or two Oscar contenders will make it, particularily Prescious, which is riding a HUGE amoung of buzz from winning many awards at various festivals, and having Oprah, Tyler Perry and Mariah Carey pimping it out.

Me too, especially because it completely should have made it but its theater count was so fucked for a while. There was a three week period after it already hit 80mil coming off a 14mil weekend where Yes Man lost tons and tons of theaters. 500 theaters one weekend, then 1200 theaters the next weekend, and then another 1000 the next weekend! It went from over 3400 theaters on January 2, 2009 to just 700 theaters on January 23, 2009.

Last January was quite full and all but it was still so, so close to breaking the record and I couldn't believe Yes Man did that poorly once holidays were over.

Yep, 2009 will easily pass the record. I wouldn't consider SH a lock though.

On the likely contenders, I see Paranormal Activity, Old Dogs, Lovely Bones, Nine, It's Complicated, and Invictus doing at least 90m+.

Possible, but not very likely with all the competition.

This year quite a few actually came very close and missed. Madea Goes to Jail, Julie & Julia, He's Just Not That Into You...

In fact I believe The Ugly Truth had an excellent shot at getting there, had it not been for immense female-oriented competition it got with Julie & Julia and The Time Traveler's Wife shortly after its release.

Another (related) record this year will certainly beat:

Most opening weekends above $30 million. We're at 25 right now, the record is 28, I think. New Moon, 2012, Avatar, A Christmas Carol will definitely open above that and that's enough to beat the current record. I also think that Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel, This Is It and Where the Wild Things Are have a shot at a $30+ million opening as well.

With Cloudy and PA we have 26 definites now (Id be shocked if PA couldn't use its buzz for 100 million now. I think we can get 4 more films that are likely. It's looking very good.

Very true, but mine still was a month old, and the original purpose of the thread was about summer 100 million films, it evolved.

I really don't think Couples Retreat is iffy anymore. It'll be at $85+ million by the end of the next weekend...It's Complicated is happening too.

What's your take on Invictus? How much do you think it'll make?

Old Dogs- no matter how horrid it is- will be absolutely huge.

It's going to happen, obviously. I wouldn't consider TPATF a lock, though.

Ticket prices have gone up 23% since 2003. So with today's ticket prices, 37 films in 2003 would have made $100 m or more! It will be hard to top that anytime soon...
