December - best release month of the year for box-office
The Top 3 of all-time worldwide will be December releases.
The Top 4 overseas of all-time will be December/November releases.
For the domestic market it varies but for the overseas marketplace the holiday season is BY FAR the besttime of the year to have a movie released. Which is why it is astounding that December 2010 has no überblockbusters scheduled yet. I mean Narnia will be big and all but there are limits to its performance. Little Fockers should move there. Or The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Tron could be big, but not big enough.
Little Fockers should move there and Thor or Green Lantern would also have done well there. Still early though.
Either way it wont be as big as Dec 09

Either way it wont be as big as Dec 09 Little Fockers should definaetly move to December. Competition is so thin and all past sequels have done well at that time.

Little Fockers should go there but it has no appeal overseas and I couldn't care less for it. I hope it bombs.

December is a time where a rather decently budgeted film could do 200 million dollars... Like Sherlock Homes.
If it came out in July or something it would get swallowed up...

Re: December - best release month of the year for box-office
Well we have Top 3 films for the December release but then 2 of them are from James also all of LOTR were really good movies. I think so they are at top because of what they offer to the audience and not based on the months they are released. Just consider one of the HP movies was released in November as well but did not make anything great out of it, good but not great.
I still believe that summers can gross more numbers, December is definitely second in that list no other month has that potential.
There are umpteen number of movies in December which did not gross more well same goes for summers.
Overall summers have more movies grossing good none exceptional whereas December has few movies exceptional but others are just flat

I argue for overseas there's no time better than the holiday season. No contest.
Hell, The Golden Compass made $300+ million OS with a December release.

Re: December - best release month of the year for box-office
You're right about overseas. For domestic it depends on the movie. Something like Spiderman won't do very well. Personally I love holiday blockbusters and they have a certain type of feel, mostly epic/classy in nature. Hate if you must but King Kong/Narnia/Potter 4 was the best winter ever. Avatar has a holiday feel, so did TGC and CR. LOTRs were epic.
Summer blockbusters are fun and all but I tend to gravitate towards winter if there are any. It's also easy to see why if some of them are runaway hits because winter depends on legs and WOM not really OW.
If the big three opened in December they'd be dead with WOM spreading much faster than the summer and less chance for a gangbusters OW.
Anyway, few movies fall into holiday style blockbuster. It'd be great if we could get one every year. This year for me it looks like Narnia 3 will take it, hopefully Fox does a decent job out of it and not shitty SFX. Including November, no contest. Deathly Hallows & Rapunzel = epic. Red Dawn hopefully will be Blood Diamond-esque and Unstoppable like Deja Vu.

Hell, The Golden Compass made $300+ million OS with a December release. True as I said this is the second best time to earn money. One factor that contributes is the publicity. Most of the Asian Markets are interested in watching action and fantasy flicks which makes a lot of movies earn more overseas and again it is not related to month alone.

In the summer, in countries like Italy..the box-office is nearly dead. Around Christmas and New Year's it is terrific business everywhere.

So should more epic films like 2012 or historical films be released during this time as well.

These are the kind of movies which they tag English Movies too. Titanic was the only exception because of WOM and some action scenes there as well

But releasing movie in the summer grants studio an opportunity to make shitloads of money from blu-ray/dvd release in November/December.

And there are certain movies which after seeing down performance releases the titles in Summers itself for which I see a lot of people buying them just to brag about the Action titles in their list

TDK2/BB3 can beat Titanic if released in December 2012.

Just domestic. Worldwide it has no chance. Even without competition from Hobbit 2.

Obviously. It could break $1.3b worldwide though. TDK did break Batman out internationally.

Batman does feel like a December film. It's gloomy and stuff.

Yeah, and I'm sure it'll get a Best Picture nomination if it's as good as Batman Begins. Dr. Lecter wrote: Tyler wrote: TDK2/BB3 can beat Titanic if released in December 2012. You mean beat Avatar? Maybe. Let me see how it is in a month.

Re: December - best release month of the year for box-office
Baman films will stay in the summer.
However they should try a Shrek flick in the holiday season.
And you know what would also do bombastic numbers? A Christmas-themed Pixar flick. Assuming it'd be as well-received as their usual stuff and with the Christmas bonus...it'd rule.
