Looks like this is the only market where it's not gonna decline considerably from Crimes of Grindelwald. Maybe there's actually more Mads Mikkelsen stans in Japan then Depp stans now?

Yeah, USD totals are going to suck for most of the year due to how unfavorable the exchange rate has become since early March, I expect. ¥10 billion is barely $80 million...

It's the most unfavorable it's been since 2015, but could go back much, much further.

It's the most unfavorable it's been since 2015, but could go back much, much further.

Corpse, we need to get back $1=¥75.72 of October 2011. We need to do something (╥﹏╥)

If only 2011 or 2012 actually had some huge films! No films earned over ¥10 billion in those years to take advantage of the crazy favorable exchange rates back then.

Looks like this is the only market where it's not gonna decline considerably from Crimes of Grindelwald. Maybe there's actually more Mads Mikkelsen stans in Japan then Depp stans now?

It is nice to know that Depp's absence seems to have had little/no impact. And Mikkelsen's presence here will help his profile grow in the market, too.

The Harry Potter / Wizarding World brand is perhaps "too big to fail" outright in Japan. At its peak in the early 2000s, it was gigantic (and again in 2007 when the book series concluded). It's far and away the biggest film franchise (revenue) in the market. And while the series gradually lost its audience over time, it stabilized right before HP ended which has carried over well into Fantastic Beasts with minor losses.

And I don't think it's a market where many care much about JKR's comments and such to the point of abandoning the series. At least, I don't get that impression. I only saw a handful out of thousands of posts about her on Japanese boards over the weekend. Many probably don't even pay much attention to this type of news outside Japan, either. And, personally, I think there's room to still enjoy the works of problematic people and separate the two.

Pretty close and still very good. The Wizarding World BO History and April Opening Weekend charts have been updated above.

-Second Biggest OW for a Hollywood film since 2019 (after No Way Home).
-Biggest OW for Warner Bros. since 2018 (since The Crimes of Grindelwald).

What's not good? That exchange rate! Just hit the most unfavorable level since June 2015, and isn't going to take much to reach 2002(!) levels now. So while JPY / Admissions are perfectly fine, don't expect USD totals to be good this year and potentially the worst they've been in over 20 years (it's much harder to get an unfavorable exchange rate back to more neutral levels, at least in a stagnant market like Japan with little/no inflation--can take many months or well over a year).

Corpse can Conan 2022 open bigger than Conan 2021. I am a bit of confusion because they have reduced shows to 31 times vs 43 times (last year), how likely are the percentage improvement are you expecting or decrease likewise. Can we expect the biggest Non-Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen OD/OP/OW? I am very much curious because I want Conan to exceed ¥10B.

Again, on the side-note, some analysts are speaking of Howl's Moving Castle Legs for Shinkai "Suzume's Locking-Up". How are you expecting from this film based on yesterday teaser look? Can we expect it to exceed ¥10B, or vice versa....

Its going to have less showings than the last year conan movie! That's surprising. Maybe they want to save for FB3?

by the way heres the trailer for Suzume's Locking-Up:

I agree with Corpse about its date. Maybe its a unique date for the movie? Toho having bigger plans somewhere or trying to do something?

This way we cannot (?) break last year record ¥1.609B /¥2.218B (2-Days/3-days) Opening. It's opening on 500 theatres this time, but why reduce shows to save FB3 (༎ຶ ෴ ༎ຶ)

Regarding Suzume's Locking-Up, I heard that it's expected to pull Howl's Moving Castle Legs, Though, I myself do not know much about it. I honestly like the trailer but the drop from Your Name - Weathering With You is so big that I can even think above ¥10B (very honest), but yet if it pulls Howl's Moving Castle Legs then ¥20B looks possible.

Howl's Moving Castle Trends (All Total Ending on __)
W00 : ¥1.48B
W01 : ¥4.75B
W02 : ¥6.79B
W03 : ¥8.45B

This year's Conan can't match last year's film's seating/showings because the market was pretty dead when it opened AND it became the first film in history to open on every single premium format screen and broke the theater count record.

However, all those seats aren't always necessarily. It "only" sold 29.2% of its available tickets because it was given such a crazy wide release. Last year's film set a franchise OW record (revenue), but sold 12,000 less tickets than the 2019 film.

This year's film will probably get a little more than the 2019 film in terms of seating/showings, which will be plenty. I don't know if it will break the franchise OW record, but it'll probably more or less match the most recent films. And with DBS being delayed, it has a very open Golden Week period. And Dr. Strange isn't opening until May 4th (the day before the holiday period ends), so any impact it'll have on seating/screens will be minimal.

So long as COVID doesn't cause more restrictions/SOEs (cases are slowly creeping up again, unfortunately), this year's film is in an excellent position to go for that ¥10 billion milestone.

>Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore snaps a three month drought of no big openers and achieved the second biggest opening weekend of the year. Not only that, its opening weekend is also the second biggest for a Hollywood film since 2019. And further, this is the biggest opening weekend for a Warner Bros. film since 2018 (since it's own predecessor). The third entry in the series sold an impressive 503,955 admissions over the weekend frame on 895 screens, and sold 685,197 admissions over its first three-days. Its opening weekend is only down 8% versus The Crimes of Grindelwald and down 4% versus the original. This is a very, very rare victory for Hollywood in the market these days, and it has a very good shot at becoming the first Hollywood release to reach the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone since 2019 (Star Wars IX).

>Sing 2 dropped big now that it's out of Spring Break and will quickly descend as a result. That said, I think it did just what it needed to over the holidays to likely secure ¥3 billion. And if it does, it'll be only the fourth imported film to reach this mark since 2019. So, big drop from its predecessor (over 40%), but good total given the circumstances (decline of Hollywood + family films beginning to struggle in the market).

>Mr. Osomatsu had a truly massive drop, but it's a bit misleading since last weekend was boosted by an event on Saturday. Still, it's proving to be pretty frontloaded regardless and should finish around ¥1.5 billion. This is still likely higher than many expected judging from the reactions to its impressive opening weekend.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Little Star Wars 2021 didn't really perform as well as it could have over Spring Break, and now that its holds are going to be large outside of the holiday frame (especially on the weekdays), it's certainly not reaching ¥3 billion now and is going to take longer than expected to reach ¥2.5 billion as well. The Doraemon films have been very unlucky with COVID, often releasing around the time of SOEs, but I don't think that's the only reason they've been struggling lately. We need to wait at least another year to be sure, but I'm pretty sure the rapid demographic changes in Japan have begun to impact the films too.

>The Last 10 Years held pretty well coming out of Spring Break, and while it's not going to be easy, has left itself a fair chance of reaching ¥3 billion. If I had to guess, I'd say it'll barely miss (~¥2.9 billion), but Warner Bros. might push for it.

>Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!, sequel to the romantic-comedy TV series, is another notable success in the BL (Boys-Love) and general LGBTQ+ genre of films in the past couple of years. Its weekend gross is estimated, but its three-day total is an actual above, selling 77,334 admissions in its first three-days. Japan has been making progress on LGBTQ+ issues recently (after being very slow on it), and films featuring LGBTQ+ characters and stories are performing better as a result.

>Morbius is a major yikes. Outside of special cases, a 65% drop is very rare and about as bad as you can do in Japan.

>Jujutsu Kaisen 0 rounded out the Top 10 in its sixteenth-week of release. It's nearing the end of its run now, but will have enough in the tank to get over the ¥13.5 billion mark to become the 15th Highest-Grossing Film of All-Time. After sixteen weeks, its admissions are up to 9,568,829.

With Conan basically monopolising golden week 10 billion feels more likely than ever unless the movie is very poorly received or something. Seems like a relatively safe bet for it to make it this time around.

Conan shows are heavily reduced in some sites. Aeon Cinema Kohoku is now scheduling to screen only 22 times. Last year, it was screened for 65 times, so we have lost 43 shows <( ̄︶ ̄)>

Many of last year's showings were rather empty last year due to the near record release they gave it.

The new film can safety go back to 2018/2019 levels and still put up the same sort of opening weekend. The last three films sold between 1.012-1.144 million admissions over the weekend. Adding many more showings didn't result in last year's film going above this.

And yes, JustLurking. If any Detective Conan film is going to reach uber-blockbuster status (¥10 billion), it'll be this one since conditions are extraordinarily favorable. Fantastic Beasts 3 will be the only holdover that's making significant money. And Golden Week is abnormally light on releases this year since Toei had to delay DBS, and Hollywood isn't releasing a thing over the holiday period. Disney missed a big opportunity with Dr. Strange 2 by releasing it at the very end of Golden Week (it only gets 2 days...) rather than before or during it.

Yup! I can see people calling last year release as "Overkill", TOHO Umeda has 21 shows (9680 seats) vs 29 shows (11,700 seats). Let's see how people favours this time ( ◜‿◝ )♡

This will almost certainly be the biggest opening of all 2022 (and likely top 3 yearly contender), so hope everyone's excited.

EngSub trailer for anyone interested:

A couple things:

If it opens above ¥1 billion, Detective Conan will enter the first place tie with Harry Potter and Star Wars as the only film franchises with six films to open above the milestone.

If it opens above 1 million admissions, Detective Conan will rise to second place (ahead of Star Wars) as the film franchise with the most films to open above the milestone (Harry Potter is first with five films).

I imagine it'll be the sole first place holder for both achievements in a couple years.
