Howl's Moving Castle grossed almost 7M on its 7th weekend and after that it went on making 65 more millions. I'm thinking a final gross between 140 and 150 thanks to the summer dailies.

Ponyo will be in theatres until 2009 as well. Not sure how long Howl's Moving Castle was in theatres.

are we predicting the domestic or Japan's gross? Thought we are predicting domestic but anyhow the name sounds too much like Pootie Tang so its not going to do well in the states

Japanese gross. Im sure it won't see anything above 10M here since Howl's Moving Castle made 4.7M. And the only country outside of Japan (where it made 190M) where it even went over 10M was South Korea with 18M. 98% of it's total gross (235M) was from Japan. And the same was true for Spirited Away. 96% of it's total gross (265M) came from Japan, though Spirited Away made 10M here (but I think it was because it won Best Animated Film beating Monsters Inc).

The cumulative take (with weekly results in parentheses):

* 1st week: 1,575,817,355 yen
* 2nd week: 3,228,150,000 yen (1,652,332,645)
* 3rd week: 5,258,741,380 yen (2,030,591,380)
* 4th week: ~7,200,000,000 yen (1,941,258,620)

The 10 billion yen (~91 million USD) mark will be broken sometime this month.

Thanks to T. Ishikawa for the news.

--LLin 21:36, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

I think this is great news. It's 2nd week was bigger than it's first (though that could be due to more days in release), the 3rd was bigger than the 2nd, and it's 4th is on par with it's 3rd week. And all of it's weeks have been stronger than it's first. And they are projecting 90M+ before the end of AUG, maybe even hit 100M, so that'd be around a month in release + a week or so for Ponyo. And it'll be in theatres for 4 more months after AUG. :D

"Dragon Emperor" unearthed its top gross from its $7.5 million launch in Japan (including previews), where it finished second to the fifth frame of Hayao Miyazaki's latest sensation, "Ponyo on a Cliff."

Mummy 3's solid debut wasn't enough to take the No.1 Spot from Ponyo in it's 5th weekend, and since Ponyo dropped 5% last weekend to 6.85M, it must mean Ponyo managed to increase more than 15% in it's 5th weekend. :D

When the charts are updated, I'll post the actuals.

Indeed a 15% increase from last weekend. :) And now it looks like it'll have NO PROBLEM crossing 100M before the end of the month. The 90M projection was obviously much too low since it already hit it.
That means Ponyo added a huge 25M from just the past 7 days alone. Hmm, it's 5th weekend is actually bigger than it's second I think.

-46ish% (don't have the exact drop, but the math works well) it's second weekend.
-3% it's third weekend.
-5% it's fourth weekend.
+15% it's fifth weekend.

150M+ will happen. :yes: :thumbsup:

NUMBERZ!

13.8M
7.5M (-46%) it's second weekend. 29.3M total
7.2M (-3%) it's third weekend. 48M total.
6.85M (-5%) it's fourth weekend. 65.4M total.
7.7M (+15%) it's fifth weekend. 90M total.

First Week: 14.3M
Second Week: 15.01M, +700K (total - 29.3M)
Third Week: 18.45M, +3.44M (total - 48M)
Fourth Week: 17.6M, -850K (total - 65.5M)
Fifth Week: 25.4M, +7.8M (total - 90M)

It's having a monster run. EVERY week has been bigger than it's first week, and increasing (the 5th week nearly DOUBLED the first), and it's increase EVERY week (not total, I mean it's increasing day by day type increase) except in it's Fourth Week where it saw a small decrease from it's Third Week.

Amazing run so far! :D

Doesn't Japan have a lot of holidays in the summer?? I remember reading something about this several years ago. So this might the one of the biggest reasons as to why it is increasing every week. Not sure though....I don't know anyone in Japan...lol.

But still...it is having a great run so far and has a great chance to get over 150 million....wow. Japan is crazy for Hayao....I don't think there is an American equivalent to him...

Holidays and such would explain it.... except nothing else is seeing these increases, or such amazing holds, with the exception of Boys Over Flowers which is doing very well.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/too ... /Japan.jsp

TDK dropped nearly 50% (yuck)
Pokemon the 11th movie dropped 17%
Boys Over Flowers did stay flat though, and it should be the No.2 film of the year in Japan.
Kung Fu Panda increased by 2%.

But films just have huge legs in Japan since there isn't a rush factor whatsoever. The average person only sees 1/2 movies a year. A 4x multipler is considered meh in Japan. Pokemon, which you'd expect to be frontloaded, opened to 9M and currently stands at 36M after 5 weeks. It's going to end up above 50M.

Howl's Moving Castle opened to 13M (Ponyo opened just a little higher) and had a 15X multipler for example.

Ponyo Cross 10 Billion Yen Threshold

Toho announced that box office total of Ponyo exceeded 10 billion yen on August 18. Ponyo reached 10,135,000,000 yen in 31 days. Last weekend's box office take was 112.6% of week before.

Other films that reached the 10 billion mark:

* Spirited Away (25 days)
* Howl's Moving Castle (33 days)
* Princess Mononoke (43 days)

Howl's Moving Castle's was the last Japanese movie to exceed 10 billion yen.

Thanks to T. Ishikawa for the news.

--LLin 23:00, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Spectacular news. It hit 10B Yen (91M) 2 days before Howl (190M finish), and 12 days before Princess Mononoke (ests say 160M-180M or so, don't have number).

200M isn't out of the question for Ponyo. :thumbsup:

All Time List in Japan:

1. Spirited Away - 234M (though some say more).
2. Titanic - 202M
3. Howl's Moving Castle - 190M
4. Princess Mononoke - 170M (just going to average the estimates).

I don't know what's 5th, could be HP1 with 152M though.

But it seems almost 100% certian that of the Top 5 in Japan, 4 of those will be Miyazaki films. :thumbsup:
