I'm not going to do a full analysis since this update is very late.

>Joker really surprised in its debut, delivering the biggest opening weekend ever for a DC film by a whopping 41%, besting that of Suicide Squad. The solo Joker outing sold an impressive 356,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 359 screens; and sold 498,971 admissions since opening on Friday. And while all that's a significant achievement, it's also very notable since it came in above ¥500 million, making it just the ninth overall comic book/superhero film (DC/Marvel) to open above that mark AND it achieved the biggest opening weekend for the month of October (by revenue). Very, very impressive all around.

Even if it as the poor/mediocre legs of most films of the genre, it'll reach at least ¥2.5 billion ($25 million), but the novelty/unique factor of the release should give it more standard legs, so I'd expect a total between ¥3-3.5 billion ($30 million+). And as long as it exceeds ¥3 billion, it'll surpass the 1989 Batman to become DC's highest grossing film ever in Japan.

>All the other openers mostly performed as expected -- not very well, so I'll briefly go over their admissions: High & Low: The Worst sold 121,462 admissions on 322 screens; Laws of the Universe sold 96,000 admissions on 324 screens; John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum sold 84,000 admissions on 256 screens.

>Weathering With You has reached 10,118,193 admissions after twelve-weeks in release, surpassing Avatar on the all-time admissions chart. But the most notable accomplishment for it this weekend was that it surpassed E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Armageddon, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban all at once to become the 13th highest-grossing film of all time. It's slowing down now, but it'll climb one more spot when it surpasses The Last Samurai (¥13.7 billion) in the coming weeks.

I'm an assistant manager at my local Barnes & Noble and with 45-50 hours a week there. It pays pretty well, maybe more than some would expect from retail. I'm also an English-to-Japanese/Japanese-to-English translator for Gengo "on the side."

Gengo has been booming with customer requests in recent weeks though, and it's taking up a significant amount of my free time. It could be due to the JLPT coming up in D.C. in six weeks (examinees, I presume, wanting study guides/questions translated has become common), or perhaps it's from preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics from certain companies (some random, and often short, requests coming in), but overall customer requests have been very high lately, and I'm taking full advantage of this uptick and accepting as many as I can.

English-to-Japanese/Japanese-to-English is oddly one of the most demanded translation requests on Gengo, so I can at least utilize my Japanese-language skills on there (got my JLPT-N2 last year) to use there, since finding jobs utilizing Japanese-language skills is very hard outside of major metropolitan areas (and they're far too often as an interpreter).

I'll have the weekend actuals from this past weekend, followed by the chart updates posted tomorrow.

What's your profession? And how many hours do you work a week (on average)?

I'm going to be away for a few days, so I won't be able to post any updates until Thursday or Friday. If I do find an opportunity (unlikely), I'll post Joker's actual tomorrow. But I bet one of you will!

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weathering With You Exceeds 10 Million
Joker performed very well over the weekend, and easily achieved the biggest opening for a DC film. But more impressive than that (given DC films aren't very popular), is that it certainly appears to have opened above ¥500 million, maybe earning as much as ¥550 million since the R-15 rating will likely inflate the average ticket price.

A ¥3 billion ($30 million) total should be in play, meaning it could challenge 1989's Batman to become the highest-grossing DC film ever.

Japan Academy Prizes (Wins/Nominations):
Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald (3/12): Best Screenplay (himself), Best Sound, Best Supporting Actor (Nishimura Masahiko)
All About Our House (2/6): Best Newcomers (Naoki Tanaka and Akiko Yagi), Most Popular Performer (Naoki Tanaka)
The Uchoten Hotel (0/11)
The Magic Hour (0/8)
Once in a Blue Moon (0/10)
The Kiyosu Conference (0/6)
Galaxy Turnpike (0/0)

He's been a very successful director at the box-office (Hit Me Anyone One More Time will exceed ¥3 billion), although Galaxy Turnpike was certainly a misfire. And his films, and himself (for director and screenplay), are favorites for nominations at the Japan Academy Prizes (Galaxy Turnpike aside...), but they're often overshadowed by one or two other films at the ceremony. And I can't find how many nominations Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald received. With wins in three major categories, I'm going to assume it would be around 10.

Fixed.

It does appear to be a first day record for a DC film, but do remember that DC films don't perform very well in Japan. Not dismissing the successful start, just that the number itself is just okay.

Saturday should be around 10/15% higher, so an opening weekend around ¥450 million ($4.2 million) looks doable. That'd best Suicide Squad by 15% to become DC's biggest opener in the market.

As for a total... if it follow the standard DC film, it'd gross a bit above ¥2 billion ($20 million). If WOM is good, and it manages to attract casual moviegoers, then a ¥2.5 billion ($25 million) result or higher is possible. But Japan is a market where projecting a mere day after release is rarely accurate. All that said, if it manages to gross ¥1.98 billion ($18/19) or more, it'll become DC's highest-grossing film in the market since 1989's Batman.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weathering With You Exceeds 10 Million
Director Mitani Koki's Box-Office & Japan Academy Prize History:

Box-Office Results:
NA/NA - Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald (1997)
¥135.0 million ($1.1 million) / ¥1.27 billion ($10.2 million) - All About Our House (2001)
¥567.3 million ($5.0 million) / ¥6.08 billion ($49.6 million) - The Uchoten Hotel (2006)
¥506.2 million ($4.8 million) / ¥3.92 billion ($36.1 million) - The Magic Hour (2008)
¥503.3 million ($6.4 million) / ¥4.28 billion ($55.4 million) - Once in a Blue Moon (2011)
¥483.7 million ($5.0 million) / ¥2.96 billion ($30.1 million) - The Kiyosu Conference (2013)
¥270.5 million ($2.3 million) / ¥1.32 billion ($10.8 million) - Galaxy Turnpike (2015)
¥457.6 million ($4.2 million) / ¥2.29 billion ($21.1 million) - Hit Me Anyone One More Time (2019) [3 Weeks in Release]

Japan Academy Prizes (Wins/Nominations):
Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald (3/?): Best Screenplay (himself), Best Sound, Best Supporting Actor (Nishimura Masahiko)

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weathering With You Exceeds 10 Million
Thanks for all the updates, Corpse!

I'm glad Samurai Shifters made a billion yen. I do like both Hoshino Gen (the lead actor) and Inudo Isshin (the director). The Zero Focus remake is as stunning as the 1961 original. Also happy to see the new Mitani Koki doing so well! I vaguely recall that Galaxy Turnpike wasn't as big a success at the box office when it was released. If it's not too much trouble, would you happen to have box office comparisons of Mitani Koki's movies? It's much appreciated!

I'll have to disagree with some of the posters here and critics elsewhere: I thought Weathering with You was a perfectly wonderful film. Hopefully it will at least beat the frightfully awful The Last Samurai in due time! At least it's gone past the mediocre Bohemian Rhapsody.

Tokyo Olympiad may very well be Ichikawa Kon's masterpiece, so it's a good thing that Kurosawa ultimately left the project. I'm very curious about how Kawase Naomi will approach the 2020 Olympics. Her aesthetic doesn't seem to fit the muscular dynamism and human-centric qualities of most Olympic documentaries (I'm expecting a lot of shots of human figures abstracted or dwarfed by their environments). I would have preferred Iwai Shunji or Anno Hideaki for the project.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weathering With You Exceeds 10 Million
The documentary was a landmark achievement in filmmaking, both on a technical level and social level, so it undoubtedly drew the attention of many in the country (hence its admissions). The 1964 Olympics was Japan's moment to sort of reintroduce themselves to the world after World War II, so little expense was spared in producing the film. Over 70 hours of footage was recorded, and then edited down for a 170-minute documentary feature.

It was as close to a once-in-a-lifetime production as any film could be really. Its admissions are absolutely understandable.

However, the government wasn't exactly satisfied with the result as it focused more on the human aspect with its athletes moreso than showcasing, if you will, the country's progress. But, it was likely the human aspect that made it such a huge success, both critically and financially.

The biggest question surrounding the film is how would it have performed if Akira Kurosawa (whom the government selected as their director) had remained on the project, instead of departing it due to creative control?

I want a history on Tokyo Olympiad, is it free admission or something? Or even worse, government arrange the citizen to see it...

Great total for Weathering With You. Excited to see what Shinkai brings next. Hopefully he can recreate the charm and magic of Your Name next time.

Makoto Shinkai's Weathering With You exceeded 10 million admissions (10,020,000) on Tuesday, its 75th day in release.

This makes it eighteenth overall film, and tenth domestic film, in history to ever exceed 10 million admissions.

A few more stats:

>Third overall film this decade to exceed 10 million admissions.
>Second Japanese film to exceed 10 million admissions since 2008 (Shinkai's own Your Name. being the other).
>Seventh animated film in history to exceed 10 million admissions.

I'll have an upcoming post about the history of films that exceed 10 million admissions at the box-office in Japan.

The day-and-date release is questionable as you allude to but it should be okay in this case since, while it's not associated with any current franchise (to my knowledge), the Joker should be a recognizable character from the Batman series. None of the Batman films have done very well at the box-office in Japan (despite high critical reception) since the 1989 film though, so it also shouldn't benefit much from being linked to a franchise...

In the end, I basically expect it'll perform as a standard DC/Marvel film -- a ¥250/300 million opening, followed by mediocre legs to reach ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) or so.

All that said, there are two factors that could offset it from a standard comic book film. First is the R-15 rating; and second is the Golden Lion win. The former could have a negative impact (darker toned films usually equal lesser box-office results), while the latter should certainly help generate some buzz among casual moviegoers.
