 Friday #'s (February 13)
From BOG
To nobody's surprise, moviegoers stormed the multiplexes on Friday the 13th to see the new remake of Friday the 13th. But the opening day take was even bigger than expected with an estimated $19M in ticket sales collected in the first day. It was the largest opening day tally of any film since last November's vampire drama Twilight and will go on to generate the biggest opening weekend of 2009 thus far. The stellar gross will certainly represent a very high portion of the Friday-to-Sunday take so a three-day bow in the range of $40-45M could result. The comedy Confessions of a Shopaholic debuted on Friday with an estimated $4.3M in its first day of release. Based on the best-selling novel, the Buena Vista release should continue to see strong sales throughout the weekend. With Saturday being Valentine's Day (always a busy moviegoing day) and Sunday expected to be better-than-normal given the Monday holiday, the female-skewing Shopaholic may find its way to $15-17M over three days.
Sony's banking thriller The International opened to an estimated $2.6M on Friday. Look for a three-day debut of around $9-10M.
Among sophomore holdovers, Friday-to-Friday declines were 52% for He's Not That Into You, 33% for Coraline, 49% for Push, and 43% for The Pink Panther 2.
