I went onto HSX, and saw that you informed people of the #'s there are well. Where else are you updating at this very moment? Great #'s all around. Eh. I think we'll still lose to 2007 right? Holdovers should have increased because then last weekend's "bad weather" excuse fails.

 Re: Weekend Estimates (Christmas weekend)
It's kinda odd to see a Will Smith film yet to pass $40 m, after two weekends of release, along with Christmas already...

 Re: Weekend Estimates (Christmas weekend)
Kind of disappointing for the family film holdovers, even with the theater loss, and strong competition, because family films have been so resilient over the holidays and gotten a second wind. Despereaux and Bolt really didn't go up as much as I expected they would, but Marley and Me/Bedtime Stories really must have taken most of the family audience. This holiday season has been acting really weird actually overall. Usually Christmas is more subdued and then box office and then surges on the 26th and the weekend, but this year really seemed to have a Christmas rush.
The fact that the openers from last weekend hardly went up despite underwhelming openings tells me that last weekend moviegoers weren't interested in them. We got a lot of spinning last week, and I'm sure weather had something to do with it, but the studios made it out to be much bigger than the real reason, that moviegoers didn't care for last week's movies. If they did, those films would have had better 4day weekends this week.

I think they may have meant for the year. Unfortunately, the pre-Christmas December box office was downright terrible, that I think we'll end this weekend with about $9554, with three days left in the year. The 2007 tally topped $9663.7, which we are $109.7 m away from. It seems like we will barely pass the 2007 total, but ticket prices went up nearly 4% this year, so if we were looking in 2007 dollars, we're nearly $400 m behind last year.

Fox is now at about $983.2 m for the year, and has three days left to top $1 billion.
Disney has about $989.5 m for the year, and has three days left as well.
Good to see them both past $1 billion, but they certainly are cutting it pretty close...

 Re: Weekend Estimates (December 26-28)
Twilight and Four Christmases is up now at BOG as well:
Four Christmases 5,045,000 7,701,375 -34.5 2,510 5 2,010 111,817,000 Warner Bros. Twilight 4,518,000 5,189,319 -12.9 1,849 6 2,443 167,063,000 Summit
Decent hold for Twilight considering the theater loss. It's avg is up 40.8% from last weekend. The gap between it and Madagascar is now $8 m.

 Re: Weekend Estimates (December 26-28)
First posted updated with BOM.
I'm so happy for Marley & Me's success. The movie was as good as I had hoped and did the book justice. It's nice to see Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston each have a big success like this, as they have both been called box office poison in the past.
Bedtime Stories is still a winner, it did about what I expected. Incredible weekend for Benjamin Button considering its premise and running time. Valkyrie is excellent.
Acceptable holds for Yes Man, Seven Pounds and Despereaux.
Poor opening for The Spirit. Decent but not much better expansion from Doubt.
Four Christmases held decently considering Christmas is over.
Slumdog is still fabulous.
Gran Torino is looking like a breakout hit early on.
Massive PTA for Revolutionary Road but let's see how it does when it expands.

 Re: Weekend Estimates (December 26-28)
It seems to me that the Christmas Day numbers relative to the 3 day numbers are very high. I have to admit to some surprise by the front-loadedness across the board. I suppose the sheer magnitude of compelling and diverse movies to see starting Thursday created a lot of this effect.

I think also it has to do with what should be good holds next week as the holidays as still in effect. So, it makes sense that the difference should come from some weekend. The daily pattern wasn't quite set for big increases this week anyway.

Yeah, although some could make a case based on the economy. Although this trend has been happening for a few years. The holds are great compared to music sales at stores. I think given the shift towards DVD and other options it's a good hold.
