Not a bad number at all. It won't pass 300 but $60 million+ is looking really good which is great for this film.

Also, its shitty because its bound to drop Saturday and Sunday. If it were to rise then that wouldn't be half-bad.

And anyone who thinks an opening over $60 million for a 3-hour R-RATED Superhero film featuring spliced heads, smashed bones, explicit sex scenes, no true villain and no true hero, with a WAY smaller fan base than people here are assuming is out of their goddamn minds.

The swords/Sandals genre has never been doing well in the US (Alexander, Kingdom of Heaven..all flopped, Troy disappointed) and yet 300 was huge.

Watchmen was advertised more heavily than probably any film of this year so far with trailers attached to The Dark Knight and Quantum of Solace.

The marketplace is completely EMPTY.

And with this OD (if it holds), we're looking at a $60 million start in the knowledge that legs most likely won't be good.

If it drops 30% and 30% as given by someone from the prediction thread it will end up with 54.75m. Not over 60m last I heard.

If the $25 million holds then I can see a $23 million Saturday (-8%) and a $13.8M sunday for $61.8 million. Not bad.

Be a little careful with 60+ predictions though. Sex and the City opened to 26/55. I doub't it'll be that frontloaded, but just in case it fails to hit 60 so people don't go all crazy and call it bad.

It is also the widest R-rated release of all-time and WB invested $130 million into it, twice as much as for 300.

Exactly. The marketplace is EMPTY and it may drop huge and without a 60m start-alright it isn't shitty-but it's worse than underwhelming.

You're letting your opinion of the film get in the way of box-office analysis. 300 had so much more going for it then Watchmen, and that's been common knowledge all along.

EDIT: And just because there's an empty marketplace, it doesn't mean a movie is going to lure demographics to it that weren't interested in the first place. Especially if it's R, it's not like teenagers can just flock to it because there's nothing else to see.

Even if it is that frontloaded and opens in the mid 50's, how is that bad for this? I'd say less than 50 would be considered disappointing, and it's not going to open with less than that.

It's not a spectacular opening whether it does 55 or 65, but it's great either way.

She usually says rival studios when its a rival studio, so if WB is the source of the $25m, then that could be a lowball "safe" figure.

This film had to rely heavily on story. There was no big name stars in this to drive the masses so for an R rated film like this to open over $55 million is pretty awesome.
