Post The October 3 logjam (8 movies opening at least semi-wide)
Hollywood shows its scheduling stupidity with a whopping 8 movies opening/expanding into wide release on October 3. What will rise? What will fall? What do you want to see?

An American Carol (Vivendi Entertainment) - 2,000+ screens
Appaloosa (New Line/WB) - Wide; guessing 1,500+ screens
Beverly Hills Chihuahua (Disney) - Guessing over 3,000 screens
Blindness (Miramax) - 800+ screens
Flash of Genius (Universal) - 800+ screens
How to Lose Friends & Alienate People (MGM) - 2,000+ screens
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (Sony) - Guessing at least 1,000 screens
Nobel Son (Freestyle Releasing) - 500+ screens

Since it's likely to be the one no one knows about, here's some info on Nobel Son:

Director: Randall Miller (Bottle Shock)
Screenwriter: Jody Savin, Randall Miller
Starring: Shawn Hatosy, Alan Rickman, Mary Steenburgen, Ted Danson, Bill Pullman, Bryan Greenberg, Eliza Dushku, Danny DeVito, Lindy Booth
Genre: Comedy, Drama

Plot Summary: A son struggles to finish his thesis when his father wins the Nobel Prize in chemistry, making life all the more difficult for him and his mother, a well-known forensic.

R-rated trailer

I personally think it looks pretty good.

This always seems to happen in October for some reason.

Just like last year, it should mean almost nothing breaks out, at least until the end of the month. Body of Lies will probably do well with an October 10 release, though.

Nick and Norah looks terrible; can't imagine that many would be interested in seeing it.

In order of anticipation, greatest to least:

How to Lose Friends & Alienate People
Nobel Son
Flash of Genius
Appaloosa
An American Carol
Blindness
Beverly Hills Chihuahua
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (Yes, I'd rather see talking dogs and Piper Perabo :wub2: )

The same thing happened in mid-October last year, when 7 movies opened in at least semi-wide release (8 if you count The Nightmare before Christmas 3D in 560 theaters). Only 30 days of Night did well. Everything else did poorly, though Gone Baby Gone had some decent legs:

As for October 3 this year, I doubt Appaloosa goes anywhere near that wide, unless it can have very high PTA averages in limited release. Same thing goes for Blindness. I thought Flash of Genius had moved to later in the month.

Oops. I just checked. Flash of Genius was originally set to open on Oct. 17 but was moved to Oct. 3.

Piper Perabo is in CHIHUAHUA? I haven't actually seen an ad for it or bothered to look up info on it :P. I really like Perabo though.
