That's a huge budget for Prometheus, what was Fox thinking there....regardless of the aggressive marketing $250m would mean more than $550m WW total. I don't see that happening yet...

TDKR makes sense, it will be profitable so that huge budget is justifiable.

Avengers could have done with a little lesser as well, but it should make the budget and then some more.

I'm not really sure Avengers could've done with less. It's got a huge cast and I think most of them had salary bumps as this is for all intents and purposes a sequel to all of the superhero establishing movies that came before it.

RDJ, Hemsworth, Evans are the heroes actually returning, rest of the cast is just coming up for the first time in more than cameo roles, still yeah overall the cast is quite big and the action scenes as of now are looking great. So yeah $220m is a good budget.

Ummm....Prometheus will have a long way to go to recoup its budget. If it flops, it will be the coffin nail for big budget serious adult science-fiction.

So....two years after the massive success of Inception the serious big budget sci fi blockbuster is dead? Ok.

I mean, it won't help if it flops but the sci fi blockbuster ain't completely dependent on Promtehteus. Espicially considering a film like Oblivion is being releases next year.

Inception had Nolan. The end.

The visuals look flawless but still, 250m?? No wonder they went for PG-13.

If it flops it won't mean that adult sci-fi is dead because Prometheus could do 400m worldwide and still be considered a flop with that ridiculous budget...it just means this kind of film should be made for a lot less.

Speilbergs still out there and while it has been 10 years since Minority Report, its still possible for him to make another big-budget "serious" sci-fi film. Plus, Nolan can do another one, which would make studios more willing.

And as I said, Oblivion comes out just next year. If thats a success, that will keep the door open. In fact, 2013 is filled with sci-fi films. Not all are big-budget or "serious" but the genre will be well-represented and even the success of the moderate-sized or the not-so-serious films can lead to future development of big-budget sci-fi films. So to say that Prometheus is the be-all, end-all is foolish.

Not to mention, Prometheus wouldnt be the first time Ridley Scott had a big-budget sci-fi film bust, and the genre was fine after that one.

What I mean are sci-fi movies on a $200 million budget. And Minority Report was actually a domestic disappointment bsack in 2002.

Assuming a P&A budget around $100m, that's $350m in overall costs. Promo would need approx $700m to breakeven. Yikes.

Pretty solid weekend with good budgeted openers. Every movie should break even, I see Engagement getting its money back in domestic run itself. Pirates might not reach $100m domestically. Raven and Safe should break even.

26m, if tracking's to be trusted then 16 OW about 40 total, maybe a little OS, and.... the raven could actually be profitable? Seriously? It just seems like such a bomb.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

I think it can make $26m even without opening $16m, I see it opening to $10m-$11m and then having okish legs for $26m. With OS numbers I think it can become profitable.

Ridley Scott and David Fincher don't know how to keep their budgets down. Must be a pain in the ass for the studios, since neither of them are really lighting up the box office. Fincher's Dragon Tattoo movie cost $90-100m, it should've cost 50m. Same goes for Ridley's Robin Hood: cost 200m, should've been 150m max. I mean, he did do Gladiator for 103m.

As for Prometheus, I doubt that the budget is 250m. (Its not confirmed or anything right?) Even if its $200m it has to be PG-13, no way they'll spend that much on an R.

Regardless I have a hard time seeing Prometheus making its money back. I can see it making between $400-500m worldwide, depending on how good it is and assuming it is PG-13, and that still wont be enough.

I read that a movie has to make 2,5 times its production budget in order to make its money back, and that would result in 625m if its budget is 250m, 500m if its budget is 200m. Either way I don't see it reaching those numbers.

250m is way too much simply from the nature of the property. It's hard sci-fi/ semi horror, that's just a really tough sell.

Yeah I thought I remembered Universal balking at At the Mountains of Madness because it would have cost $150 million. Well that and Guillermo didn't want to throw in a happy ending or romantic subplot.

Still, I celebrate the fact that a major studio is making a big expensive horror movie again. It's been way too long!

Actually a decrease (of 5m) for Madagascar, with OS it'll make lots of money. Good for rise, which could be enormous.
