Re: The Avatar Prediction | Tracking Thread
I've felt since day one if anything is going to take down Titanic, it'll be another Jim Cameron film.
And with all the references to Dances with Wolves and Pocahontas from Comic Con, I think Avatar has the romance angle covered. The Science Fiction/Fantasy, CGI 3D angle is covered. It's the perfect storm for mega success.

LOL, I'm honestly not even sold on $200m yet. I could see this flopping big time.

You know what will be sad?
If Fox's A&C2 beat this movie.

A&C 2 will probably do similar business or slightly less but I don't want that to beat Avatar. But it is the most family friendly movie of december and well it is coming off A&C, which kids absolutely loved.

Re: The Avatar Prediction | Tracking Thread
Aside from I Am Legend, sci-fi has greatly struggled in December for many, many years.
Other than I Am Legend and TDTESS there have been no other sci fi films to open to $24 m or more. I Am Legend had the biggest box office star in the world to help it out.
2008 The Day the Earth Stood Still $79 m
2007 ALIENS VS. PREDATOR - REQUIEM $42 m ($9.5 m opening day)
2005 Aeon Flux $26 m
2002 ST Nemesis $43 m
1999 Bicentennial Man $58 m
1998 STAR TREK: INSURRECTION $70 m
1996 Mars Attacks $38 m
Since 1992, December has been very difficult for sci-fi films. Even those with huge expectations disappoint (Mars Attacks). Outside of ST Insurrection and I Am Legend, it has been littered with flop after flop of sci fi films. I'm not saying that this will happen to Avatar, but it is important to consider just how unwelcoming the month can be for sci fi films. A $500 m leap is pushing it. A $300 m - 350 m total would be overperforming even more than I Am Legend, $400 m + would be from sweeping the Oscars. But $500 m? One can hope...

Re: The Avatar Prediction | Tracking Thread
Since many of Comic Con comments post screening mentioned fantasy elements (flying dragons, floating creatures), maybe you should compare it to fantasy films as well.

It's a sci-fi film.
Not a fantasy film.

There are no flying dragons. Some flying creatures for sure though. No floating creatures. There are floating mountains.

Not a fantasy film. I would say it is more like sci-fi/fantasy/action/adventure/romance
