I have to see more on the movie before I make any kind of prediction. All I've seen are unofficial pictures.

hes usually been a 40-60 million opener kind of guy; I am Legend benifitted ftrom a market thats been dead and shit; while this baby has tons of biggies before- wall-e, get smart, happening, hulk, ect.

i'd a superman-sized 5 day around 85 million and 53-55 weekend and 170-180 total.

Smith is the biggest opening weekend draw around; hence why as long as he keeps making movies for december, theyll be huge cause thye get legs; but in july he doesnt get them.



smith has had 4 films on july 4th weekend- mib, mib 2, id4, and wild wild west. Last one was MIB2 6 years ago and that was a sequel to a mega hit.

In the new millenium hes had 2 non mib movies open in july- bad boys 2 and i robot, both which did around 50 opening and around 140 total; I see this being a bit bigger than that, but not that much.

What's the movie about?

Actually i think Hancock is more comparable to I robot. If that movie had released in december it would have done $180+ million.

Summer 2008 is packed with much more high profile and highly anticipated movies so hancock might have to settle for $140-160 million. Also peter berg is great but his movies flop for some reason.

Still it all depends on the marketing and trailers of hancock.

Okay, let's look at one VERY important thing here:

I Am Legend stars Will Smith. For most of the movie, he's the only human character. It's an action movie. It opens in December, a month usually devoid of action movies. In fact, it's a sort of vampire movie, and those are hardly ever hits worthy of any note. His career high opening- in the heat of July- is "only" over $50 million. So how much does I Am Legend open to? Over $80 million.

Seriously, first he carries Hitch and Pursuit of Happyness- two movies with nothing in the way of special effects- over $160 million apiece and then opens his first action movie in three-and-a-half years to over $80 million... and in DECEMBER, no less. Hancock is an original superhero movie, and superhero movies are big right now, but many of them don't have huge name draws. However, there's no doubt that Smith is a HUGE name, and they've got the 4th of July weekend to do absolutely massive business, and I see that business happening.

200+ is happening. Smith is just flat-out unstoppable at the moment.

You know, that's the thing with Big Willie.

For example, Cruise and Hanks have always had good directors, quality movies
to lift them as high as they got. But Smith, aside from MIB, had mediocre movies, he never starred in a LOTR, Bond, Bourne, HP, Spidy, Batman type of movie, you know one of the greatest movies of all time. His movies are mostly mediocre. And to be able to open movies up at the box-office like he does...I really don't believe it's the quality of the movie.Sure ALI failed at that, but it still had a 40 M+ opening.

Imagine Will having his own Forrest Gump/LOTR/Bourne someday, that movie will break all-time records.He only has like 11 or 13 movies where he's the leading star, he's still young yet he achieved so much. Now he's maturing, and choosing the better roles. No more WWW type of movies for him. Look at his line-up, Hancock (Mann production superhero drama light comedy/romance think Superman goes evil, then Seven pounds a romantic drama, next up Empire with Mann as the director and Logan (gladiator).
He's on his way to outperform Denzel ever since he takes on serious roles, people will b!tch about this but I really believe after seeing POH and IAL that Will Smith is a GREAT actor, at the level of Denzel. And he's only going to be better.

I am just happy that Will Smith is the new boxoffice king. He is a huge draw and can turn his movies into big hits.

So happy the guy represents darker skinned people. White people are funny because success get into their head too fast. Ex: Tom Cruise.

In. I will not doubt Will Smith until he actually drops a clunker.

It'll be a hit, but I don't see it breaking $200m.

80-90m can happen in 5-days, Smith is huge, he even made a hit with a drama. But if the movie sucks, it will drop terribly no matter who starts in the film. So I have to see some footage before I join. But at the moment 200m is very likely.

In fact... if this is great, which is might be because Berg is surprisingly a good writer, I wouldn't be shocked it wins the year. Yes, I said it. I wish it had a better title, but whatever.

Add in the fact that it's just about time for the media to turn on Will Smith and we're looking at 1993 all over again.

No, but it isn't like all of his movies make 200 million.

After seeing the trailer, I'm more confident in this movie not making 200 million, but it will still be a good sized hit. 150-180.

It's not about acting ability, it's about taking down those on top. Every major actor/actress in Hollywood has had the press turn on them at one point or another, Will is due.

He's also due for his first catastrophic bomb...

My Last Action Hero comparison was probably a bit over-the-top (although they are remarkably similar) as I'm sure this will outgross that (adjusted) significantly. 200 will really depend on WOM.

Yeah, it'll be successful, but it will be something like Chuck and Larry for Sandler - meaning a hit, but not close to the biggest hits.

Didn't love the trailer, but I see 150 for it as well.

Oh yes.. this will will be successful, 200m is a stretch in such a crowded superhero marketplace but i think its got a shot.

If it were anyone other than Will Smith (same trailer) I'd be predicting 50 million or less. I'm still saying under 200, but lord knows.
