Post Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (INTL) $109m and counting
According to early estimates THE PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER opened in Germany, Austria and German-Speaking Switzerland with about $11.5m.
Ticket-wise it achieved the fifth best opening ever by a German (co-)production in Germany and the best non-comedy opening ever by a German movie, doubling the previous mark set by DOWNFALL...

I'm pretty sure it has more than 100.000 admissions in Austria. I was at the theater yesterday and it was like 90% of the people there watched it. Amazing.

Hmm, this could hit $200 million worldwide if it performs equally well in other European countries.

Hope that Russia also welcomed The Perfume with some serious numbers this past weekend. No advertising on major TV channels though, but general awareness should try to do the best.

Unbelievable, surprising success in Russia!!! Moreover, it even out-performed The Da Vinci Code ($3.2 Vs $3.05 mln.) although the awareness and popularity of the book was absolutely nowhere near. Another achievement: opening day of The Perfume doubled that of The Da Vinci Code ($0.64 Vs $0.305 mln.). Bravo!

P.S. Gross from Ukraine is for the opening day (Sunday I guess - still don't know why didn't they release it on Thursday as usual).

P.P.S. My theater was going to play Perfume for the week only, but then suddenly changed the schedule - I guess they've never done it before - taking one show from the heavily advertised local movie.

Even though beautiful weather in the German speaking territories prevented even better results, PERFUME, which opened in Italy over the weekend was No. 1 in the world with about $10m according to early estimates and has cumed about $31m after two weekends...

From Variety: http://www.variety.com/article/VR111795 ... id=19&cs=1

German thriller "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" has eclipsed the buccaneers, easily beating "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" as the top film at the international box office.
Figures released Monday by Summit/Constantin showed "Perfume" with $11.3 million at 1,300 playdates in five markets for the weekend, topping the 12th frame of "Dead Man's Chest" by 35%.

Top performance for the adaptation of the Patrick Suskind bestseller came from its second stanza in Germany, with $6.7 million for 51% of the market, and from the Commonwealth of Independent States, with $2.05 million.

"Perfume" has cumed $31.8 million, including $20.1 million in Germany, $6.1 million in the CIS, $2.7 million in Austria, $1.6 million in Italy and $1.4 million in Switzerland. It opens Oct. 4 in France, Nov. 24 in Spain, Dec. 8 in the U.K. and Dec. 27 in the U.S.

It'll certainly pass $100 million. It depends on the US whether it'll make $200 million or not.

Why on earth does BOM list Pirates as the winner of the weekend?!

I bet it will pass $200 mln.

Probably for BOM only American movies exist in the international box-office.

I think when Astreix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra was #1 internationally, they pointed that out, though.

From Variety: http://www.variety.com/article/VR111795 ... id=13&cs=1

Tom Tykwer's thriller "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer," which won the international crown last weekend, remained an attractive player in Euro markets with $7.1 million at 1,298 in five markets. "Perfume" continued an impressive run on its home turf in Germany with $5.5 million, down only 13% in its third frame for a $28.4 million market cume.

"Perfume," which opens Wednesday in France, has totaled $47.3 million so far for Constantin/Summit.

Who knows? The Name of the Rose bombed in the US despite being an international success. I don't see more than $15-20 million in North America.

Still good enough for $150+ million worldwide probably.

The popularity on the movie in USA is relative to the popularity of the book. Perfume the book was somewhat of a literary phenomenom in Europe when it came out and has been expanding it's fanbase in the 20 years that have followed. The awareness and B.O of the film is largery boosted by the big fanbase of the book.

Did the book ever have a breakthrough in USA? It's a very "european" book, so it might have not had the kind of impact in USA as it had in Europe.

Sorry.... But I think it will be lucky to gross $10 million in US.

As Variety's review says, "Euro big-budgeter, shot in English on a reported tab of E50 million ($63.7 million), has a readymade fan base, especially in Europe, among the book's 15 million readers but is more high-end fare in Anglo markets."
