Post Iron Man: May '08--Official Prediction Thread
According to Rottentomatoes.com, Iron Man will be landing in theaters in May 2008. This was reported by director Jon Favreau in the official Iron Man blog on Myspace.com.

If it gets the first weekend of May, I'll give it 62/150.

The only A-list Superheros at this point that do not have a major motion picture is Wonder Woman and Captain America... both are in development.

Iron Man is a B-level character.

Captain America isnt really a A level character. Just like Fantastic Four hes like a B+ character, his comic book sales arent strong enough to push him to A level but since hes around for so long, hes well known for that reason

Cap and Iron Man are becoming more well known because they are the "stars" of Civil War. Civil War also deals with Spiderman revealing his secret identity, so it should draw in a lot of new readers. By the end of the year, Iron Man and Captain America should be at least as well known as Daredevil, if not more so.

I had never heard of the guy before the movie was announced. I doubt I'm the only one.

Opening: 31.0
Total: 80.9 (2.61)

There was actually a couple of TV movies and a show about Captain America in the 1970s.

There was actually a couple of TV movies and a show about Captain America in the 1970s.

1 cartoon series back in 1966, 1 tv movie in 1979, and one Roger Corman-esque movie in 1991. Sort of like Fantastic Four where their peak popularity was in the 70s and 60s which makes them B+ levelesque. At least Hulk,Spiderman and Batman still had very steady strong sales throughout all the decades which catapult them to A level list. Punisher also had very strong sales in the 80s and 90s but he just cant seem to break out of cult status to put him in the A list

no not at all, but i would just argue that iron man is a high level comic character.

i would say the only high level characters left are capt. america, iron man, and the mighty thor.

iron man was more well-known than blade prior to the blade films. before the blade films, he was a C character at best.

i would put money on saying that iron man and thor's popularity is as equal to daredevil's.

The problem is Jon Favereu is opting for an unknown for the film. An unknown may work for films like Spiderman, Superman and Hulk but a B level character needs to have at least a well known star to catapult interest for the movie. How well would have Daredevil, Blade, and Constantine done without a major star attached to it? It would have done something like Punishers gross

He's not as well known as some of the bigger ones, but I actually think he is pretty familair to the over 20 crowd. Besides, let's remember the concept itself might have a lot of appeal. A cool looking Iron Man movie can bring a lot of people in.

Tobey McGuire was very well known before Spider-Man.

A little off topic question here: How popular was Van Helsing? It has something to do with popularity and summer start. I know that Van Helsing had Dracula, Frankestein and all that good stuff, but what was it that brought the audience to watching it?

Iron man:

53/185

if they go with an unknown....39/150

and prespiderman, maguire was an unknown to the public. people in hollywood knew him but he had no real hit film yet. hge was a face to the public, at best. dunst was semi famous and so was dafoe.

It looked like some good summer-fun like the Mummy films.

In that case, popularity really shouldn't be a problem for this film. It will also depend on the marketing. What company's distributing this movie?

I'm trying to think of factors such as popularity of Dracula and Frankestein. If they are really popular enough to bring all of those $50 million, then that would shake things a bit. Perhaps Iron Man really doesn't have to depend on popularity. Maybe the summer start + action non-Kingdom of Heaven movie combo is enough to push this pass $50 million.

Additionally, I doubt Jackman and Beckinsale were really that bankable.

yeah, what campany is distributing this? it depends a lot really...iron has the potential to look-as a character-insanly cool. he can fly and is super strong(i think). if this somehow gets a really good cast-and im talking johnny depp as iron man, nicole kidman as the girl, tom cruise as the villain, this could be real big blockbuser especially if its good, like 250 million+ blockbuster.

but we all know it wont get that treatment(jon faveru??, c'mon!) nor the budget to make any of that happen.

This movie will be based off of the hit cover of "Iron Man" by the Cardigans, right?
