Spiderman 1 - $403,706,375 + $418,002,176 = $821,708,551
The Matrix: Reloaded - $281,576,461 + $457,023,240 = $738,599,701
War Of The Worlds - $234,280,354 + $357,135,962 = $591,416,316
King Kong - $218,080,025 + $329,176,050 = $547,256,075
Mission Impossible 2 - $215,409,889 + $330,492,673 = $545,902,562
Mr. And Mrs. Smith - $186,336,279 + $291,871,241 = $478,207,520
The Last Samurai - $111,127,263 + $345,631,718 = $456,758,981
Mission Impossible 1 - $180,981,886 + $275,512,947 = $456,494,833
Ocean’s Eleven - $183,417,150 + $267,300,000 = $450,717,150
James Bond: Die Another Day - $160,942,139 + $271,028,977 = $431,971,116

Mission Impossible 3 - $225m + $415m = $640m est.

Although Cast Away walked away with the Domestic title, Mission Impossible 2 was the Worldwide top grosser for 2000 with strong International takings. The original was no slouch either, scoring a similar Intl. vs. Dom ratio and a 2nd placing behind behemoth Independence Day back in 1996.

It's been six years since the 2nd installment and no other other spy movie has approached the first two's gross...Die Another Day was close, though lacked the Domestic takings to challenge the American spy series. Cruise rarely falters in blockbuster-form...with everything from Minority Report, Last Samurai to War of the Worlds....they were all big International players. His bankability outside the US is 2nd to none....though whether his antics off the screen affects this remains to be seen......i doubt it.....with the exception of Inside Man, no other movie has played well to the adult audience.

MI3 will easily blanket the globe until the DVinci Code - X3 double smash arrives.

It won't be as big in Germany as the second film. M:I-2 had the advantage of coming out in a rather less exciting summer, thus it pretty much got all the hype that summer. It was by far the most hyped, advertised and exposed film in 2000 here. I expect M:I-3 to open with around 1,000,000 admissions and finish just a bit above 3,000,000.

It will probably make more US$ in Australia, considering the A$ is up 50% from MI2.

WOTW did $357 m overseas, while TLS did $346 m, MR did $226 m, MI2 did $330 m, and MI1 did $276 m. I think $350 m is on the low end of how it could do, but am leaning towards a $425-450 m overseas finish.

Mission: Asia is a success

Cruise starrer grosses $2.6 mil across eight territories

By PATRICK FRATER

HONG KONG — "M:I3" roared off to a whammo start Wednesday in eight territories around Asia, grossing over $2.6 million on opening day.

In Indonesia, pic was United Int'l Pictures' biggest ever opener with $84,000 (Rup732 million) scored from 69 screens. That was also the country's third biggest opener of all time.

In the Philippines, pic was the biggest opener of 2006, clocking $247,000 (Pesos12.66) from 100 screens. Numbers also put it top of the "Mission" franchise, 147% up on "M:I" and 91% up on "M:I2" and 12% ahead of Tom Cruise-starrer "War of the Worlds," which was a big hit around the region.

Malaysian numbers were also franchise winners. With $277,000 (Ringgit601,000) from 51 locations it was the biggest opener of 2006, 193% ahead of the first "Mission" and 128% up on "M:I2."

Thai gross of $327,000 (THB12.3 million) made it the biggest UIP title of all time and the country's biggest non-holiday Wednesday.

Biggest numbers of all came in Korea, where it scored $926,000 (Won856 million) and outgrossed "King Kong's" opening frame.

In Singapore, it scored $196,000 (S$309,000) from 29 locations and was the biggest Cruise opener in the territory.

Hong Kong gross was a very comfortable $207,000 (HK$1.61 million), while in Taiwan it garnered $366,000 (NT11.6 million) at 20 locations, which were billed only as previews.

Aside from the mishap in China, where the film is now delayed until July, UIP said the planets aligned for the Asian release. Pic had good Internet buzz, had been extensively trailered and received good early reviews. "This is really about the film, which we really expect to have the best legs," Kurt Rieder, UIP's VP sales and marketing, Asia, said.

Other local conditions helped. It was the first of the summer blockbusters and encountered no weather problems and no major competing sports events.

That delay in China is so stupid. They were concerned how China is portraited in the movie. Come on, Maggie Q wasn't added for nothing. It was bounded to be one of the biggest imports of the year, but with July date, it will lose a lot to piracy.

Currently, it is on course to an opening of around 500,000 admissions in Germany. That'd be terrible, but not unexpected considering we have the nicest weather in months after a long time of raining and cold. The last thing anyone here wants to do right now, is to see a movie. All other films are dropping between 40-60%.

Mission III goes global on 9,500 screens

Jeremy Kay in Los Angeles 05 May 2006
http://www.screendaily.com/story.asp?storyid=26059

The spectre of Tom Cruise looms over the world this weekend as Paramount launches Mission: Impossible III in its biggest ever day-and-date release.

The third instalment in the action franchise is set to open through UIP in 55 territories on approximately 9,500 prints.

M:i:III goes out on May 3 in France, South Korea and Hong Kong, followed a day later in the UK, Germany, Russia, Australia, Taiwan and Argentina.

The action picture opens on May 5 in Mexico, Italy, Spain and Brazil. Japan will follow on Jul 8, and China, which blocked a release this weekend, will possibly open in July.

Much is at stake here. Paramount chairman Brad Grey greenlit Mission: Impossible III in June 2005 following lengthy delays. It was his Grey's first major play since joining the company and both he and UIP president and chief operating officer Andrew Cripps, who becomes president of Paramount International Theatrical in January 2007, are looking for a big worldwide hit.

The franchise launched in 1996 and has grossed more than $1bn worldwide and more than $600m internationally. Mission Impossible took $275m at the international box office and 2000's Mission: Impossible 2 took $330m.

500,000 opening, would probably ruin its chances of getting anywhere near 5m......

The openings so far in Asia are impressive but not record setting.....it's on par with King Kong in nearly every market, beating it in some and loosing in others.....

The Viacom Inc.-owned studio said the figure was within its expectations of a bow in the $50 million range, but it was gratified by the international showing, where it earned $70 million after opening virtually everywhere except Japan and India. The movie did bomb in Germany, where Cruise has historically had a tough time, the studio said. The movie cost just under $150 million to make.

Yahoo

Based on this MI:3 should make $170- $200M without Japan.

The first two were big hits in Japan. MI:2 made $82M in Japan.

So an overseas total of $220M+ looks likely.

Is there any reason why Tom Cruise is not popular in Germany?

Internationally, Mission: Impossible III launched in virtually every major territory with the exception of Japan. Its best outing was Korea with an estimated $10.6 million and in the United Kingdom where it grossed about $10.1 million. Most territories experienced double-digit improvements from chapter two but records primarily came from developing markets such as Russia, the Middle East and in Asia. Among its top-grossing venues were France with $6.1 million, Taiwan grossing $3.1 million, Mexico at $3 million and Australia with $2.9 million.

MCN

Wow. South Korea number is $10.6M.

That's just spin doctoring...

Some of his movies didn't do that good in Germany, JERRY MAGUIRE for example.
But M:I2 was the second biggest hit in Germany in 2000 (4.4m tix sold) and M:I1 was the 7th biggest hit in Germany in 1996 (3.3m tix sold).
This year we experienced a very long, very cold and very snowy winter - just three weeks ago it was still snowing in some areas. This weekend was the first weekend with nice and warm weather and nobody went to the movies (it looks like M:I3 sold only about 350,000 tix). Those steep drops in attendance happen every year until people get used to the nice & warm weather and M:I3 just happened to open this weekend - that's bad luck... look out for a rise or almost no drop-off next weekend!

BUT those drops in attendance usually amount to about 50 % to 70 % meaning that even with bad weather M:I3 would have opened significantly below its predecessors (they had opening weekends of 0.8m tix for M:I1 and 1.3m tix for M:12)

Indeed. Tom Cruise is not unpopular here. His action stuff usually does pretty well. Maybe not record-breaking, but decently enough.

Here are approx. admission numbers of several Tom Cruise flicks:

Mission: Impossible 2 - 4,400,000
Mission: Impossible - 3,300,000
Minority Report - 2,700,000
War of the Worlds - 2,700,000
The Firm - 2,600,000
The Last Samurai - 2,200,000
Interview with The Vampire - 1,600,000
Vanilla Sky - 1,400,000
Days of Thunder - 1,100,000
Collateral - 900,000

Those are all pretty decent numbers. He has been quite a draw. M:I-3 will be lucky to reach 1,300,000, in the best case scenario. As I said above, there was just no such hype this time around. Moreover, this summer time was pretty much the "most anticipated warm summer" in many years here because we suffered through a cold winter and a very harsh spring. Everyone here was longing for warm and sunny days. So, it's a combination of all that.

Post Re: MISSION Impossible 3 (INTL.)
Very ordinary opening in Australia, it just managed to top the original by a measly 100K, it was down 42% from Mission Impossible 2.

The trend i'm seeing here is that Mission Impossible is opening very much like Van Helsing in the international markets....big but not potent or record breaking.

South Korea is the big exception, with a US$ record breaking $10.6m, which would put it above even My Boss, My Teacher's $9.3m US figure. It's the first movie to cross US$10m on opening. Cruise hit big last year as well with War of the Worlds (then record $8.6m in US$). Though that movie collapsed in subsequent weeks to finish behind movies like The Island and Mr. And Mrs Smith.

This is just playing into the hands of DaVinci Code...it should rule uncontested in May/June with a semi threat from X3 (open big but die quickly) and Cars not going wide overseas until after the World Cup.

Well, the official estimates from Germany are in...

310,000 admissions in its opening weekend. That is beyond horrible. Certainly, the beautifully warm weather all around Germany hurt it a lot, but still...

M:I opened with 774,576 admissions.

M:I-2 opened with 1,318,961

So this is...really bad. The only hope now is only that Japan will help it, but currently it looks like it will top out with around $370-380 million worldwide. Still very good, but a bit disappointing.

Less than 400 is definite disappointment territory. Oh well, Cruise can move on to his next project.
