Post Biggest Opening Day in August?
What August release do you predict will have the largest opening day of the month?

Ricky Bobby is my prediction. An opening of 10-20 million seems possible and the month is so dull that it's possible. SOAP will also have a huge OD of anywhere from 7-14 million.

It's just between Talladega Nights and Snakes on a Plane. I'm guessing around $14-15 million for Talladega Nights and $11-13 million for Snakes.

Hope so as I want it to be a hit and prove once and for all the viability of the internet as a marketing tool. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the movie looks like fun.

Ill eat my sock if SOAP makes over 10 million opening day. Seriously which ever joker got everyone to go along with the high buzz joke ride should be rewarded because people are really falling for it. My prediction for SOAP is somewhere between 22-24 million so I think something like 9 million would bring it to 24 million

Just thought I'd take the liberty of quoting these two. You know, just incase. I mean, if it does open as low as some of you are saying (as in, under $20 million weekend), I'll be glad to admit I was wrong, but we've got an offer to eat a sock here!

If it makes more than 6 million OD that's still more than it would have made had it been titled 'Pacific Air Flight 121' and thus a successful internet buzz campaign.

Actually mine is in the low 20s but under 20 million is possible. A 9 million opening would give it a 24 million weekend maybe less

I expect a video of the sock-eating to appear on YouTube as well.

I've also said that under $20 million is definitely possible, but I don't think it'll happen. $9 million would bring in $22 million, IMO. It's definitely getting a terrible IM.

Which is expected since the hype is in overdrive and has been for a while now. Everyone that wants to see it likely will opening day (I myself plan on seeing it at the 10PM shows on the 17th).

Hahaha, start cooking that sock. If it opens to $24 million, its opening day will almost certainly be at $10 million.

To answer the question:

It'll be between Snakes on a Plane and Talladega Nights, but I give Talladega Nights the edge because of many more theatres and more universal profile.

Talladega Nights - $13.5-15.5 million

Snakes on a Plane - $12.5-13.5 million

SOAP's opening day will make up for around 20% of its total gross.

There is no way snakes is going to make 40 million openingt weekend. IT will be lucky to break 25 million. The buzz is internet buzz. The movie looks dumb. Who actually wants to go see it? It's anaconda in the sky.. =p Ricky Bobby should break 10 million. Friday.

That the movie looks dumb is beside the point. People expect it to be dumb. That's part of the appeal I think. People want a B-movie that is made for the fans which it kind of is with the addition of extra scenes and lines as the request of the public.

Reason enough to see it: How many films actually go back and film extra scenes just to insure an R rating? Not many. Most cut scenes out to get a PG-13. That it goes against the grain in that respect is reason enough to support it because it has done something unique.

Not even close. TN buzz on the net is just slightly behind SOAP and its trailer has been better received than SOAP. Not to mention it has the PG-13 edge, a few tie-in products, and wider appeal

A few product tie-ins? Heh. You're starting to sound like excel from over a month ago.

And I also don't think the trailer reactions were necessarily better. Maybe from your point of view, but there were tons of reports from X3 where people clapped for Snakes. Big laughs for Nights, claps for Snakes... one isn't significantly better.

I'm still onboard with SOAP doing well, but Talladega will easily have the biggest opening day in August, around $17M or so.
