Post August
I hope that this isn't already a thread.. but what the shizz is up with August this year?

It will either be the biggest August on record, or the month with the the most disappointments ever..
The sheer volume of films (alot of them high profile) opening is astounding...

Last year we had 3 films open above 20 million in August. (Dukes, 4 brothers, 40 year old virgin)
This year we could double that...

There are 18 wide releases over 4 weeks.

Some of the stronger pics opening are;

Will Farrell's Talladega Nights
Snakes on a Plane
The Barnyard (has potential)
World Trade Centre (has potential as well)
Zoom (Tim Allen as a Superhero... could do well)
Invicible (sports flick +Mark Wahlberg=hit)
Idlewind (Outcast has a huge fanbase.. if the film is good, could be a hit)

some of the tossups

Night Listener (looks strange, but has Robin Williams)
Accepted (could score with teens)
Step Up (see above)
Pulse (horror has been doing well this year, and we haven't had one in a month or three)
How to Eat Fried Worms (could be the next Holes, or the next Hoot)

Then ofcourse there are a bevy of releases that will make somewhere between 5-10 million;

The descent
The Illusionist
Material Girls
Beerfest
DOA:Dead or Alive
The Protector

what does every one think?
REcord month or huge flops?

I think the only ones that can or will open over $20 million in August are Snakes on a Plane, Talladega Nights, World Trade Center (maybe, opening on Wednesday might stop it) and Pulse (maybe). All others will open less, I think.

Accepted, Zoom and Barnyard have some potential, too.

SoaP and Talladega Nights will be the only ones to open over $20M AND $30M. WTC and Invincible will do about $15M.

Pulse is a bomb in the making. Its been yanked and moved too much to not be dumped in some pathetic amount of theaters with zero advertising.

The korean version of Pulse was just bad and boring, very highly overated. I dont think it will open anywhere near 20 million judging how carbon copy the original was. At this point, I dont know what to think about WTC since theres really no commercials yet on tv nor has its trailer really been attached to any movies. I guess I have to see how the reviews or controversy plays out. SOAP I think its joke has worn down quite a bit, I can see it making over 20 million but nothing like 35 million

I'll do a full predict

August 4th-6th
Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby - 35/115
Barnyard - 14/41
The Night Listener - 14/43
The Descent - 13/38

August 11th-13th
Pulse - 10/26
Accepted - 7.5/20
Zoom - 8/27
Step Up - 9/33
World Trade Centre - 15(3-day)/21(5-day)/45 total

August 18th-21st
The Illusionist - 13/43
Material Girls - 8/21
Snakes on a Plane - 30/64

August 25th-27th
Beerfest - 8/23
DOA: Dead or Alive - 7/16
How to Eat Worms - 6/19
Idlewind - 11/30
Invincible - 24/80
The Protector - 6/19

God, what a load of movies. I don't get why these studios are releasing all these movies in crowded August, when we went for weeks in May and June where there was only one release a week. The Break Up, Cars, Click, god knows there was room for them I guess most of these are slop projects though, so it fits.

Talledega Nights is obviously the champ of the month, and I think Invincible will beat out Snakes on a Plane for second. Night Listener, Illusionist, and Barnyard will have minor success.

The stiudios can never get it right. It seems they glut the weaker months and leave the strong months empty.

Just look at September and October this year - the number of films released then is absolutely ridiculous.

Predictions:

August 4:

Barnyard - 30/90. Looks like a mildly funny CGI entry. May suffer from CGI overload with Ant Bully and Monster House opening a few weeks earlier.

The Descent - 8/22. Cliched-looking Lionsgate horror that should do Wolf Creek numbers because many will probably think it is too similar to last August's The Cave, a film that itself was pretty much ignored.

The Night Listener - 9/30. Low-key mystery/thriller starring Robin Williams that seems unlikely to get much of a marketing push from Miramax and thus won't make much of a dent.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby - 35/100. Comedy that has had lots of marketing already. Should easily surpass Anchorman numbers with a more universal premise.

August 9:

World Trade Center - 16/50. Has more starpower than United 93 but I'm not sure people really want to see 9/11 films yet.

August 11:

Accepted - 11/32. Creative premise should aid comedy in doing decent if unspectacular numbers.

Pulse - 15/40. Has been moved around/delayed many times. Should perform decently with teen crowd but the J-horror phase seems to have faded somewhat.

Step Up - 10/32. Dance films like this seem to have an audience. Should do around 'Honey' numbers.

Zoom - 14/45. Sky High may have taken whatever thunder this film may have had with its now derivative premise.

August 18:

The Illusionist - 5/12. I'm not convinced this will get a wide release at this point and Yari already botched the release of Find Me Guilty.

Material Girls - 8/20. Comedic drama starring the Duff sisters, both of which aren't popular (any longer).

Snakes on a Plane - 30/65. Should open huge before collapsing.

August 25:

Beerfest - 9/25. Broken Lizard comedy that should do Super Troopers numbers, maybe more, maybe less.

DOA: Dead or Alive - 9/24. T & A should help this film draw in teen crowd and as long as it has halfway decent TV spots it should easily outperform Alone in the Dark and BloodRayne.

How to Eat Fried Worms - 11/35. Kids film that has less starpower than Holes but a better premise than Hoot.

Idlewild - 13/30. OutKast has enough of a draw for it to surprise opening weekend before falling fast.

Invincible - 15/65. Feel-good sports drama that shares many similarities with The Rookie, a film its performance it would like to emulate.

I think you guys are underpredicting Accepted. It's getting much more face time with pretty prominent placement in front of both Pirates and Superman (something anything other than Invincible and Taladega isn't doing) and it is getting laughs surprisingly enough.

If it's Accepted vs. Pulse vs. Zoom vs. Step Up, I could see Accepted winning against almost all of these except *maybe* Zoom.

I've noticed that Accepted is attached to a lot of big films, but as to reactions, there's huge laughs for that one scene where the kid screams like a girl, and it's pretty much dead silent for the rest.

I think Descent will do well because it will be the first horror movie after
a long time since the last one. Pulse also the same.
The Battle for August biggest grosser will be between Talledega Nights &
Snakes on the Plane

Jesus, some of these Descent predictions are very, very high.
I don't know, but i got the feeling Lionsgate was only going to push it at 1,500 theatres, max.
I really hope Lionsgate use their usual tactics and get as many people as possible to see this film. It's fantastic.
