BRIDGET JONES: The Edge of Reason

I'm so excited, i'll be seeing it tomorrow when it opens in Australia, one of the few markets who will get a wide release this weekend.

If you take a look at the release dates, this weekend it opens in:

* The figures represent the original's gross and the All-Time Rank.

Australia 11 November 200..............AUD$22,404,421 (#41)
Hungary 11 November 2004
Netherlands 11 November 2004............$6m
Poland 12 November 2004
UK 12 November 2004..............£42,007,008/ $60,296,418 (#13)

All of these are the stronger markets for Bridget Jones and her BIG LAWYER and BIG LIAR... :P

The original was hilarious but it has so much heart and i really love the romantic triangle between the lead characters. One of my favourite scenes was when Bridget sang "i can't live....if living is without you".....it sounded delicously painful....

Expect big things from this sequel, afterall the original did gross $200m Internationally.

Domestic: $71,543,427
Overseas: $208,667,028
Worldwide: $280,210,455

.....and of course, you cannot not compare them to Love Actually.

Domestic: $59,472,278
Overseas: $185,235,622
Worldwide: $244,707,900

Pretty similar pattern there huh :D

This seems like more of worldwide and a tracking thread rather then a domestic predictions thread. So, I don't think it's really a duplicate.

If it is, then that's okay.

The numbers for the original in UK, The Netherlands and Australia are incredible. I am certain this will do very well also.

Is that the latest result Mason......all the International Reports suggest:

Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason - $2.3m (£1.3m - 441 TC)

UK: Previews

HP3 - $26,271,302
Shrek 2 - $13,822,955
HP2 - $10,225,144
HP1 - $9,334,343
Revolutions - $6.5m
ROTK - $5,848,799
Shark Tale - $4,495,825
Bruce Almighty - $3.6m
Phantom Menace - $3.1m
Starsky & Hutch - $3m
Spiderman 2 - $2,877,602
Bridget Jones 1 - $1.8m
Love Actually - $1.7m

Pretty good for an adult movie, however, the reviews at Rotten Tomatoes are troublesome, 23% (3-10)

Screendaily has just released results for last weekend and Bridget Jones has grossed $4.7m in 2-Days of previews.

Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason - $2.3m (£1.3m - 441 TC) – Day 1 Total
Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason - $4,731,624 (472 TC) – Day 2 Total

This is one hell of a preview session, especially for a movie which is geared more towards adults. This just suggests that everyone wants to see it and it's unlikely we'll see a drop-off on opening weekend anyways.

It's previews alone would've placed it #1 on the charts last weekend, defeating Grudge's $4.1m.

As for the upcoming weekend, $10m is assured and i would be very surprised if it doesn't give $15m a decent crack.

UNITED KINGDOM: Opening Weekend

1) Harry Potter 3: POA - $43,749,885 (£23,882,688/ €34,629,898 7-Day* or $17,478,583/ £9,346,002/ €13,787,106 3-Day - 535 TC)

REVIEW: Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

By Kirk Honeycutt
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/re ... 1000706580

Image

In this sequel to the successful 2001 single-girl-in-the-city comedy "Bridget Jones's Diary," more is less. "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" begins by repeating many gags from the previous film. Only now they feel lame and routine. Then, in the strain to explore new territory, the film pushes into areas that that don't fit comfortably into the lightly comic world of Bridget Jones.

Reteaming Renee Zellweger with her two leading men from the previous film, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant, may hamper dramatic developments but makes boxoffice sense. Despite its R rating, "Diary" grossed $71.5 million domestically and $208.5 million overseas. The new film should equal those figures though production costs have clearly gone up with side trips to Rome, the Austrian Alps and Thailand.

AUSTRALIA: Crowd Reports

Bridjet Jones' opened yesterday in Australia and it was one of the busiest days since the monster blockbusters back in June/July.

Most theatres saw SOLD OUTS around 7:30pm-8:30pm with other sessions at least 70% FULL.

This is quite potent for an adult rom com, and it should get around $5m opening weekend, which is very good.

AUD$, that's about US$3.75m.

BTW - over at Skyisfalling, they are predicting 8.5m+ pounds including previews, if that's true it will be a US$16m+ opening, i.e, bigger than Spiderman 2.

I still haven't seen Bridget Jones because the weather yesterday in Melbourne was so depressing... :D

I'm actually going to see it in a couple of hours so check for my review soon... :D

Anyway, thanks to the person who fixed the forum, because now i don't get that error warning after 30 secs......hurray :D

ARCHANGEL reviews Bridget Jones: TEOR

Just got back from seeing Bridget Jones with my friends, it was a nice little sequel to the original monster.

Image

I went to an 12:10 afternoon session and with its core audience still at work it was never going to be packed, i say around 30% FULL.

The movie itself was very good IMO and it was by no means a huge dissapointment like so many reviews have stated.

Yes it did lack a little heart and emotion compared to the original but all the elements which made the original so enjoyable are there, only slightly toned down.

Renee and Colin are unstoppable, both of them gave great performances. However, despite the marketing hyping the revival of Daniel Clever he actually does not play a huge role in this movie. Still his precense just makes you laugh like hell... :D

The soundtrack on this movie is not quite as strong as the original IMO. Music has always played a strong role in rom coms and i was looking for another Gabriel Out of Reach momment, pity.

There's a nice little shock towards the end which caught me by surprise.....and i did laugh at all the jokes. The first 30 mins are full of them, and also that sequence at the snow.

Overall, not quite reaching the heights of the original, but one of the better sequels of the year. And it's definately better than last year's "it" rom com for the festival season, Love Actually.

Overall: A to A+

Archangel's Favourite Films of 2004:

1) Hero
2) Spiderman 2
3) Troy
4) HP3
5) Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason
6) The Day After Tomorrow
7) The Passion of the Christ

AUSTRALIA: Crowd Reports (Fri)

Yesteday saw evening business swell, all showings around 8:00pm were SOLD OUT all over Melbourne.

Afternoon sessions were also very bouyant and the showing i went to yesterday were indicative of that.

Expect today, Saturday, to be super strong with middday sessions filling up fast.

Again $5m looks likely......

Bridget, Incredibles begin international rollout

Jeremy Kay in Los Angeles 12 November 2004 04:00
http://www.screendaily.com/story.asp?storyid=19922

Universal’s romantic comedy sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason goes out in its first major markets through UIP this weekend, beginning with Australia on Nov 11 on 300 prints and the UK a day later on 750.

Strong results are on the cards given the performance of the 2001 original. Bridget Jones’s Diary opened top in Australia in the last weekend of July 2001 and grossed $3.9m on 323 screens in its first seven days, and opened top in the UK over Apr 13-15 2001 on $8.2m in 417 theatres.

The Incredibles gets a slew of openings through Buena Vista International (BVI) this weekend as it embarks on what the brief yet barnstorming history of Pixar suggests will become a highly successful run.

The animation picture, currently number one in the US following a record $70.5m three-day debut for domestic distributor Buena Vista, was set to open in the Philippines and an exclusive appointment in Paris on Nov 10, Norway, Finland, Sweden and Denmark on Nov 12, and Taiwan a day later.

REVIEW: IGN.com

Review: An obnoxious flick without the charm of the original.
http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/565/565910p1.html

Image

I have to confess that there is only one statement my companion (and/or adversary) could say – "you have to watch Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason again" – that would make me angrier than hearing this call-to-arms for ignorant folk who think that movie genres draw their lines in the sand according to gender. I'm fundamentally opposed to the idea that anything is exclusively a "chick flick," or that I wouldn't (or simply couldn't) like it because I'm male.

Romantic comedies? You can't get me away from them. Notting Hill? It features Julia Roberts' best performance (as herself). Four Weddings and a Funeral? Andie MacDowell almost ruins it, but not quite. Love Actually? Bawled my eyes out. Twice. But Bridget Jones Diary: The Edge of Reason? Bridget goes to a Thai prison! Maybe I'm missing something, but what in Sam Hill does that have to do with either romance or comedy?

It was well worth the weight, says Bridget Jones star Renée

By Rob Carnevale
http://www.thisislocallondon.co.uk/news/

IT'S been three years since Rene Zellweger first put on weight, donned those big knickers and captured the hearts of cinema-goers everywhere as everyone's favourite singleton, Bridget Jones.

Yet in spite of the overwhelming box office success of Bridget Jones' Diary, there was some speculation, mostly in the tabloids, that the Oscar-winning actress didn't want to return to the role, for Helen Fielding's sequel The Edge of Reason, owing to the strains it placed upon her body.

But this wasn't the case, according to Zellweger, who clearly holds the character in great esteem and her fears about doing a follow-up had nothing to do with the look of her character.

"It's a privilege to play a character like Bridget Jones," she explained. "It's not martyrdom to change your body to play a character that you love. It's quite a creative adventure to play Bridget Jones and to have the opportunity to be expressive in that way. So there was no hesitation in terms of the process.

Bridget Jones vs The Producers

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/lifes ... ory=581359

After months of planning and tens of thousands of pounds, two big productions opened in the West End of London last night. Terry Kirby peers through the flashbulbs at the cut-throat premiere industry

As the Bridget Jones star Renee Zellweger posed and pouted on the red carpet outside the Odeon in London's Leicester Square last night, the flashbulbs popped, the fans cheered, and an aura of glitz and glamour prevailed. And behind the scenes, a small army of party planners, public relations gurus, security guards, dress designers and personnel stylists, all people on the edge of a nervous breakdown, held their collective breath.

On such a premiere or first night, almost anything can go wrong. A stiletto heel caught on a piece of chewing gum, a berserk fan lunging for a star or - horror of horrors - the failure of what is known as "a tit tape", feed the nightmares of the organisers for months beforehand. And that's without the potential disasters of the after-show parties: the cold canapés, the wrong wine, a drunken star decking a particularly intrusive paparazzi outside.

AUSTRALIA: Bridget Jones sequel steals box office

11:56 AEDT Sat Nov 13 2004
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=22152

The opening day of the sequel to Bridget Jones's Diary was twice as successful as the first film, raking in more than $1 million across Australia.

The film's distributor, United International Pictures, said Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason had opened at number one at the Australian box office on Thursday, raking in $1,127,201.

The first movie, Bridget Jones's Diary, which was released in July 2001, made $600,628 on opening day.

------------

Here's how Bridget Jones compares to other movies this year:

Harry Potter 3: POA - $2.3m
Shrek 2 - $1,730,695
Spiderman 2 - $1,602,413 (US$1,105,341 - Wed)
The Day After Tomorrow: $1.3m (US$910,000)
Troy - $1.17m (US$819,000)
Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason - $1,127,201
Van Helsing - $825,000 (US$578,000)
The Last Samurai - $720,000
The Passion Of The Christ - $637,424 (US$497,094 - Wed)

This is exactly where i thought it would be, but its doing slightly better. It's right up there with both Troy and TDAT, both grossing AUD$6.6m.

Checking Saturday's Crowd Reports, $6m is highly obtainable with close to SOLD OUTs right through the evenings in most theatres in Melbourne.

The Original opened to $600,628 as stated, which means it had an insane 6.54x multipler leading to a $3,926,141. Both Troy and TDAT only managed, 5.5x. The figure to watch is the original's opening weekend with previews of $5,989,731.

After the results for Opening Day, I'm going to change my prediction to a 5.8x multiplier for AUD$6.5. :D

Yay for Bridget! :Jump:

Not too shabby, this baby might past the original's $22m total if it opens to $6.5m and has slightly better legs than both Troy and TDAT which i'm sure it will have.

Go Bridget :Jump:

Is that including or excluding previews, SkyIsFalling has her at £8.5m+ which would easily put her at $15m, besting the likes of Phantom Menace and Revoultions.

Have you see The Edge of Reason Masonmyers, what ya think?
