Warner 1. The Borrower Arrietty (Toho) 5 2. Toy Story 3 (Disney) 6 3. Bayside Shakedown The Movie 3 Set The Guys Loose! (Toho) 7 4 N Karate Kid (Sony) 5 N The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Disney)
Finally get Warner's Top 5 before the National Top 10.
Very fast updates today, so the National may be available much earlier than normal.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/14-15
The Yen to USD conversion is really helping out Toy Story 3!
$1 USD was about 110 Yen in August 2008.
Today, $1 USD is about 86 Yen.
10 billion Yen in August 2008 ($90.9 m USD), would today be at $116.3 m USD (28% surplus).
Let me know if my math is off!

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/14-15
Your math is right. This time in 2008, Toy Story 3's Y8.3 billion would be near $75m I believe, with $100m looking a bit out of reach, but this year Y8.3 billion is over $95m and $100m will be a breeze. I remember the article announcing Ponyo crossing Y10 billion Yen ($92m I think) in 2008. And today Y10 billion is over $116m. EDIT: Corpse wrote: Ponyo Cross 10 Billion Yen Threshold Quote: Toho announced that box office total of Ponyo exceeded 10 billion yen on August 18. Ponyo reached 10,135,000,000 yen (~91,000,000 USD) in 31 days. Last weekend's box office take was 112.6% of week before.
Other Studio Ghibli films that reached the 10 billion mark:
* Spirited Away (25 days) * Howl's Moving Castle (33 days) * Princess Mononoke (43 days)
Howl's Moving Castle's was the last Japanese movie to exceed 10 billion yen.
Thanks to T. Ishikawa for the news.
--LLin 23:00, 19 August 2008 (UTC) Here it is. The exchange rate this year is boosting everything beyond a normal USD total that's come to be expected. Add in 3D boosting grosses even more, and we get at least five $100m+ films this year: Avatar (3D), Alice (3D), Toy Story 3 (3D), Arrietty, and HP7 (3D). Doesn't look like Bayside Shakedown 3 will reach the mark, but Umizaru 3 (3D) is a candidate to make it six $100m+ films this year.

Hmm, I assume $120 million is a lock now. It could beat Alice...

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/14-15
Weekend Rankings August 14-15, 2010 1 1 The Borrower Arrietty (Toho) 5 2 2 Toy Story 3 (Disney) 6 3 N The Karate Kid (Sony) 4 6 Bayside Shakedown 3 Set The Guys Loose! (Toho) 7 5 N The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Disney)6 5 Inception (WB) 4 7 7 Pokemon 13 Diamond & Pearl Ruler of Illusions Zoroark (Toho) 6 8 3 Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Double & Decade Forever A-Z (Toei) 2 9 4 Salt (Sony) 3 10 17 Police Dog Dream (Shochiku) 2The Borrower Arrietty - Y479 million ($5.6 million) - 384,298 admissions, 32% increase over last week / Total - Y6.4 billion ($74.6 million) - 5.3 million admissions after 30 days. Toy Story 3 - Y538 million ($6.3 million) - 360,071 admissions, 28% increase over last weekend / Total - Y8.2 billion ($95.6 million) - 5.6 million admissions after 37 days. The Karate Kid - Y289 million ($3.4 million) - 236,591 admissions on 271 screens. The Sorcerer's Apprentice - Y199 million ($2.3 million) - 166,359 admissions on 328 screens. (ScreenDaily used the 3day total as it's opening weekend, so that explains the large drop). Police Dog Dream - Y125 million ($1.4 million) - 116,795 admissions on 253 screens. Very strong for Arrietty, increasing 32% over last week ranking 1st in admissions for the fifth week in a row. It's already surpassed Tales From Eathsea in USD without breaking a sweat. $100 million is locked up (has been for a while), and should probably gross $110/$115m. Toy Story 3 is also still going very strong with it's 28% over last week. It's edging closer to $100m which should be crossed at the end of the weekdays or on Saturday. Finding Nemo's $102.4m USD total will also be surpassed after next weekend. $120/$125m looks like a good projection. Despite not playing well at all at Shochiku locations, The Karate Kid did well enough at the other major chains to open at No.3. Very good after what appeared to be weak pre-sales. Bayside Shakedown 3 saw a big increase this week. The weekend total and overall total haven't been released yet, but climbing two spots is very impressive. $100m is 95% out of reach now, but $90m might be possible judging by this. The Sorcerer's Apprentice played well at all locations, but not particularly great at any of them. Still a decent debut, but it'll probably miss a Y1 billion ($11.5 million) total. Inception and Pokemon 13 continue to hold strong. It'll be an interesting race to see which one of then finishes 4th and 5th behind July's big 3. Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider plummets like all the others in the series despite a holiday weekend. Hefty drop for Salt. It would appear it actually dropped this weekend, too. I see that Police Dog Dream was in limited release and had previews last weekend, but those were not included into the wide opening this weekend. If they had been, it'd have edged out The Sorcerer's Apprentice for the Top 5.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/14-15 Weekend Rankings
I'll update the 2010 Top 20 Charts and Admissions (going to add them to the 2010 charts) hopefully tomorrow when all figures are revealed for this past weekend. Openers this Week8/20 A-Team (Fox) 8/21 Thriller Restaurant (Toei) Colorful (Toho) Flowering Dogwood (Toho) Neck (Asmik Ace) Duel Masters: Honō no Kizuna Double Cross! (Toho) Metal Fight Beyblade VS Taiyō Shakunetsu no Shinryakusha (Toho) Cats & Dogs 2: Revenge of Kitty Galore (WB) (the japanese title is much better, "Great War of the World's Largest Meatball") This weekend is a youngster's dream come true; and the Top 10 is going to be shaken up a bit. Thriller Restaurant, Duel Masters, Beyblade, and Cats & Dogs 2 are all targeting a young audience. Thriller Restaurant will be the only one of those four that makes a solid debut in terms of gross though. Colorful is the final film to be released in Sunrise Studio's trilogy (Summer Wars, Evangelion 2.0 from last year) planned a couple years ago and might attract a few younger moviegoers, but it's more steered for an older group. Based on Sunrise Studio's previous works, Colorful should have a very long run. There's been alot of buzz surrounding Flowering Dogwood, so it should pull in decent numbers this weekend. But despite all the new releases, Toy Story 3 and The Borrower Arrietty are very likely to be the Top 2 films once again in their seventh and sixth weekends.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/14-15 Weekend Rankings
Based on previous years with Obon taking place primarily over the weekend (usually it's during the middle of the week, with one weekend day) like this year, drops all around should be 40/50%. Toy Story 3 and Arrietty will be closer to 40%, perhaps they can avoid a 40% drop, too, but everything else near or over 50%.

Kamen Rider The Movie W/Goseiger TOEI $1,996,920 2 460 $4,341 -48% $9,946,891 8. Salt Sony Int'l $1,916,410 3 326 $5,879 -21% $16,982,638 9. Pokemon 13 Diamond & Pearl Ruler of Illusions Zoroark Toho $1,756,363 6 369 $4,760 +2% $38,915,057 10. Police Dog Dream Shochiku $1,455,747 1 253 $5,754 0 $1,555,000Superb for Toy Story 3. It'll pass Finding Nemo in USD this weekend and is on targeting a total over $120m. Also superb for The Borrower Arrietty. It's now the highest grossing non-Miyazaki film and is looking at a total of about $110/$115m making it the first non-Miyazaki Ghibli film to gross over $100m, outgrossing the nearest film (Tales From Eathsea) by $40m or more. Good debut for The Karate Kid. Legs will appear weaker than normal being a holiday weekend, but a total in the low teens is solid for the film. Bayside Shakedown 3 delivers an excellent 7th weekend, climbing two spots in the rankings. $100m is extremely unlikely which is disappointing for the film, but a total around $90m is still great and would make it the 3rd biggest local live-action film in USD. Great weekend for Inception, keeping a total of $40m still in reach. Mediocre opening for The Sorcerer's Apprentice. A $10m total is going to be a bit of a stuggle for it. Kamen Rider nosedives it's second weekend, which is nothing new in the series. In fact, a sub 50% drop isn't too bad. A total of maybe $15m is doable, but it'll likely finish with about $13m. Nothing special for Salt, dropping a rather harsh 21% for this weekend. The drop should rule out a total in the high 20's, but low/mid 20's is still solid. Pokemon 13 keeps on going in it's 6th week now and will cross $40m before the weekend. Mid/High 40's should be the finish, comparable with the last several films in the franchise (which recently passed 55 million admissions after 13 films making it the most successful franchise in Japan in terms of admissions). Okay for Police Dog Dream. It's play was limited to one major chain and a few smaller ones, so respectable opening.

Total copies sold is now 197m, edging closer and closer to that major 200m milestone to be the first manga series to ever sell that many copies. Naruto #52 sells over 1m copies in two weeks, one of the few volumes in the series to do so in that amount of time. Naruto surpassed 100m copies sold last spring, and is rumored to be nearing it's end within a year.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/14-15 Weekend Summary
Quite terrific for Toy Story 3 and The Borrower Arrietty. I actually think that both will get above $120 million. Hopefully Inception can get to $40 million. But where's How to Train Your Dragon?

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/14-15 Weekend Summary
Dropped out of the Top 10, but still had a pretty good week and weekend. $10m total doesn't look possible, however.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/14-15 Weekend Summary
Weekend Forecast August 21-22, 2010 1 1 Toy Story 3 (Disney) 7 2 2 The Borrower Arrietty (Toho) 6 3 N Flowering Dogwood (Toho) 4 N A-Team (Fox)5 4 Bayside Shakedown 3 Set The Guys Loose! (Toho) 8 6 N Metal Fight Beyblade VS Taiyō Shakunetsu no Shinryakusha (Toho)7 5 Inception (WB) 5 8 6 The Sorcerer's Apprentice (Disney) 2 9 3 The Karate Kid (Sony) 2 10 N Cats & Dogs 2: Revenge of Kitty Galore (WB)A tricky weekend to project a Top 10 for (films below the top 5 anyway). Coming off a Holiday Weekend, with half a dozen films opening this weekend. Thriller Restaurant isn't projected to make the Top 10, but I believe it'll still make it. Not sure if the site projecting the Top 10 pays much attention to TV Ratings, but Thriller Restaurant is always ranked in the Top 10 in ratings. It'll have limited screens due to the genre and Toei being the distributor, but that shouldn't matter since it has a fanbase. The Karate Kid is in store for one of the biggest drops of the year. Opened on a Holiday weekend and has 4/5 films aimed at kids/families opening this weekend.

Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 8/21-22 Weekend Forecast
Flowering Dogwood is reported to be tracking at 70% of March's Liar Game: The Final Stage.
If it maintained that pace throughout the rest of the day and tomorrow, we should be looking at a gross of Y275-Y300 million ($3.2-$3.5 million). That'd be excellent, and could get the film to a total near Y2 billion ($23 million).
If it can increase that 70%, it just may make a run for No.1 or No.2 this weekend.
