Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2017 Charts Updating!
Some of you may be wondering why Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is being included as a 2017 release on the Top Grossing Films of 2017 list when it was released in November last year.
EIREN (Motion Picture Association of Japan) dictates that if a film released before December that grosses over ¥1 billion OR earns more than 50% of their earnings AFTER the beginning of December, it is then considered a release in the upcoming year. So, it ended up landing on the 2017 charts.
And speaking of which, I WILL have 2016's Yearly Data posted TOMORROW. No more delays. To remind everyone; 2016 was the biggest year of all-time in revenue and the most-attended year since 1974, also making it as the fifth-consecutive year that yearly admissions have increased in the market.

Also, In This Corner of the World has exceeded a multiplier of 37 after 12 weeks. If I were to include it, it'd be a clear #1; however, it debuted in limited release (46 screens) and remained a limited release for several weeks before eventually expanding to nearly 200 screens, so I'm excluding because of that. I'll keep track of it, though, because it's having an extraordinary performance.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; 2017 Charts Updating!
Unfortunately, I don't know Titanic's opening weekend... I have weekend data all the way back to 1998 (which is where I begin the majority of such charts), but only for a select number of films before then. And I've done a number of searches in the past to try and find it, but no luck. We've had a lot of new members join and participate in this thread over the past 6 months or so, so maybe we can work together to find it! And welcome to WOKJ! How did you find us? Long-time lurker, ANN, BOT, Japan Times?

Thanks for the welcome! I was introduced to this site via BOT. The discussion of Japan's box office over there isn't very active other than copying your numbers, so I decided to move here for more meaningful analysis. Speaking of which, do you have any predictions for biggest films of February and March? Any potential break-outs?

Such a shame YN. missed out on the Oscar nomination/potential win and any financial boon to be had by the same.
Oh well, at least we've avoided the frustration of having to see its run prematurely cut short à la Frozen.

Corpse, Your last post listing the highest grossing films of 2016 writes in Shin Godzilla with an attendance of 5.69. In previous posts listing all-time attendance it's listed at 5.59. For clarification I'm just wondering which it is or if there was a typo.

How's buzz for SAO: OS and La La Land? Also, it'll be interesting to see how XXX: CC performs in asian market with such diverse cast.

Thank you guys! I have another update from Italy: the three day event for Your Name here has been quite a success, so the distributor added new screenings on January 31 and February 1st: yesterday the movie added 53.971 € to the 548.909 € of last week (no data are available for January 31, unfortunately).

Also, it'll be interesting to see how XXX: CC performs in asian market with such diverse cast. I'm sure SAO will do quite well, especially if there are any giveaways to early attendees. It's definitely a fan-driven film, so the somewhat low screen count shouldn't hider it either. I'm not sure what to predict at this moment, as it could be frontloaded. La La Land getting so much award recognition will certainly give it much needed awareness (original material, fairly unknown cast, etc., is hard to overcome in Japan). It'll be released after the Oscars, so if it scores the most wins and takes home the biggies as expected, I don't see any reason why it won't do well in Japan (maybe ~$20 million or so?).

Re: Japan Box Office: 2016 Yearly Results; Biggest Year Ever
Emiya_ wrote: Thank you guys! I have another update from Italy: the three day event for Your Name here has been quite a success, so the distributor added new screenings on January 31 and February 1st: yesterday the movie added 53.971 € to the 548.909 € of last week (no data are available for January 31, unfortunately). Thanks for the continuous updates.

W13 10 (08) ¥55,000,000 ($490,000), -35%, ¥525,000,000 ($4.7 million), Silence (Kadokawa) WK3> Doctor Strange will be defending the top spot this weekend against Tim Burton's latest, and based on pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, it's probably going to remain in first place for a second weekend though it'll be a fairly close result either way. > Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children finally releases in Japan nearly half-a-year after its initial release worldwide last year, and is looking to post a respectable debut. Tim Burton has a dedicated fanbase in Japan, and the market is frequently one of the best for his films. The film's earnings from Japan will be particularly noteworthy, too, since its debut weekend will push it above the $200 million mark at the foreign box office. Also, it's fallen about $14 million shy of reaching the $300 million mark at the worldwide box office, but Japan can probably get it over that milestone (barely), too. > Your Name. will be enjoying its 24th weekend of release very much still in the Top 5 as it nears half-a-year in release, though it might fall below a ¥100 million weekend (still a record 24th weekend) for the first time since opening last August. After this weekend it'll need 3 more weeks in the Top 5, and 3 more consecutive weeks in the Top 10, to break Spirited Away's records in both categories. >Below the Top 4 this weekend is going to be very close with as many as 5-7 films likely landing somewhere around ¥60/70 million. I wouldn't be surprised if films #s 5-10 end up separated by just 10/15% this weekend.
