The Movie (NEW)
The Secret Life of Pets comes out on top in admissions for the day, but if it skews too young, then the battle for first place in terms of gross will be very tight since Shin Godzilla (down 18% compared to last Sat.) should have a significant ticket price advantage. I'd give Pets the advantage for the weekend crown since family/kids films perform well on Sundays, but it's not a lock to dethrone Godzilla just yet.
Close race between The Jungle Book, Finding Dory (up 4% compared to last Sat.), and One Piece Film Gold (up 31% compared to last Sat.) for third place today. It could really have gone to any of the three for the day, but I'd give Dory the edge for the weekend since it should experience the best Sunday of the three.
X-Men: Apocalypse recovered a bit once the evening/night showings began, but it's still going to miss the Top 5 by a wide margin.
I'll post Saturday's Estimates shortly.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (08/13-14)
Weekend Estimates (08/13-14)/2016年08月13日-2016年08月14日 01 (---) ¥510,000,000 ($5.0 million), 0, ¥1,035,000,000 ($10.2 million), The Secret Life of Pets (Toho-Towa) NEW 02 (01) ¥490,000,000 ($4.8 million), -09%, ¥3,360,000,000 ($32.6 million), Shin Godzilla (Toho) WK3 03 (02) ¥325,000,000 ($3.2 million), -02%, ¥5,285,000,000 ($51.2 million), Finding Dory (Disney) WK5 04 (03) ¥320,000,000 ($3.1 million), +16%, ¥3,865,000,000 ($37.0 million), One Piece Film Gold (Toei) WK4 05 (---) ¥315,000,000 ($3.1 million), 0, ¥615,000,000 ($6.0 million), The Jungle Book (Disney) NEW 06 (---) ¥160,000,000 ($1.5 million), 0, ¥335,000,000 ($3.3 million), X-Men: Apocalypse (Fox) NEW 07 (05) ¥135,000,000 ($1.3 million), -27%, ¥665,000,000 ($6.4 million), Rudolph to Ippaiattena (Toho) WK2 08 (04) ¥95,000,000 ($935,000), -55%, ¥485,000,000 ($4.7 million), Kamen Rider Ghost the Movie (Toei) WK2 09 (07) ¥85,000,000 ($840,000), -03%, ¥1,585,000,000 ($15.0 million), Pokemon XY&Z: Volcanion and the Mechanical Magearna (Toho) WK4 10 (06) ¥75,000,000 ($740,000), -43%, ¥360,000,000 ($3.5 million), Himitsu: The Top Secret (Shochiku) WK2
>The Secret Life of Pets is off to a very strong start, and appears to have dethroned Godzilla from atop the box office throne over the weekend. Illumination has made a name for themselves thanks to the success of Despicable Me, but mostly those minions, and it clearly proves true with this debut.
If the estimates is accurate, it'll have only came in 7% lower than Minions from last year, achieving the second biggest opening weekend for a non-Disney/Pixar imported animated film in the market. Minions opened a week earlier in the summer, so I don't expect Pets' legs to match those, but there is still plenty of summer vacation to go, so I expect a total north of ¥4 billion ($40 million+); that'd easily be enough to claim the title of second highest-grossing non-Disney/Pixar imported animated film in the market, after Minions.
>Shin Godzilla holds strong in its third weekend and delivers yet another incredible weekend. There is a scenario in which it could still claim a third-consecutive week atop the box office (if Pets skewed really young, driving its avg. ticket price down), but if not, a third weekend of this level is very good. After three weeks, it's already outgrossed Hollywood's 2014 film, and continues along a reasonable path to exceed the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone.
>Finding Dory also experiences a strong hold, in its fifth weekend, and has exceeded the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone. It does, however, continue to trail Monsters University, now back by about 9% based on estimates after five weeks. Its projected finish remains unchanged as a result, so expect Dory to finish just above the ¥8 billion ($75 million) milestone.
>One Piece Film Gold enjoys a healthy weekend increase in its fourth week, and likely secured it a total above the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone in the process.
>The Jungle Book experienced a pretty slow start, but I don't believe the property had a lot of potential in the market itself (to warrant blockbuster predictions). The debut is decent, but I doubt it'll be enough to push the film above the $1 billion worldwide milestone, as a total around ¥3 billion ($30 million) is likely its limit here.
>X-Men: Apocalypse disappoints, as expected, and misses the Top 5 in its debut weekend. Based on estimates, it'll come in nearly 30% below Days of Futures Past, however, it may have opened slightly higher than First Class which opened to ¥158 million in 2011. The new films are only earning ~60% of the original trilogy, but at least they're remaining somewhat consistent. Apocalypse is likely to miss the ¥1 billion milestone, though, and should finish around ¥800 million ($7/8 million).
>And finally, just outside the Top 10, Ghostbusters finishes its previews week with around ¥100 million ($1 million) in advance of its wide opening next weekend. It's very, very rare for a film to receive previews in Japan anymore, so it's difficult to say how successful the previews were. However, given the selected theaters only had it scheduled for one or two showings a day, the figure seems decent/good enough to me. I don't think it'll breakout next weekend, but it's unlikely to disappoint either.

Re: Japan Box Office: Obon Festival 2016 (WKND Ests.)
Along with enjoying Japanese cinema and with Japanese films regularly representing ~60% of the box office for the past decade, the legs in the market (th average multiplier each year is around 7) make it entertaining to track.
Weekend Actuals are coming in sporadically due to the ongoing Obon Festival holiday period, and I doubt they'll all be available until tomorrow or possibly even Wednesday. So, when I post Monday's estimates shortly, I'll update the Weekend Estimates to include all known weekend grosses/totals as well. I'll mark films with actuals reported with a '*'.

Take Finding Dory for example, which opened to $7 million in Japan while it opened to $7.8 million in Australia. Not that remarkable in and of itself, until you think about how Japan has five times the population that Australia does. Movies NEED good legs in Japan, because the Japanese are apparently in absolutely no rush to see anything on its opening weekend.

Re: Japan Box Office: Obon Festival 2016 (Monday Ests.)
Only the most diehard fanbase films have any sort of rush out factor in Japan, and even then, it's pretty rare they don't hit a multiplier of at least 4. And they only dip below a 4 in cases that a special promotion is going on, such as a giveaway item to the first X attendees.
Weekdays are also strong as a result of the non-rush factor of the market, and often represent more than 50% of a film's total earnings depending on the genre.

the lesser evil wrote: Movies NEED good legs in Japan, because the Japanese are apparently in absolutely no rush to see anything on its opening weekend. I think it is because they hold word-of-mouth and reviews in higher regard than hype and marketing. So it takes some time for that to generate. Marketing is instant, and only works for franchises, I guess. The rest of films are not instant must-sees.

Pets' total for Wednesday is the same as the one for Tuesday.
Pretty impressive performance by Pets so far, and Jungle Book didn't do too shabbily either. X-Men... let's just not talk about that one anymore.

 Re: Japan Box Office
Thanks for the notice! I updated the previous post.
Apologies for no Weekend Forecast this weekend; I was occupied most of Friday. Here's how the weekend is shaping up based on Saturday's admissions:
>The Secret Life of Pets is looking to score a second weekend atop the box office, while Shin Godzilla is aiming to reclaim the top spot in its fourth weekend thanks to its incredible WOM. And based on Saturday's admissions (Godzilla is down just 9% vs last week)... I'd give the very slight edge to Godzilla in retaking his throne back, but it'll be a very close race for #1.
>Ghostbusters is on track for a third place debut if its Sunday delivers. A debut atop the box office would have been difficult since Pets was a borderline breakout last week, and Godzilla is continuing to post significant numbers, so a third place start isn't unexpected.
Based on Saturday's business, I figure it's aiming for ¥250 million ($2.5 million) or so over the weekend frame, however, it received four days worth of previews last week and opened on Friday, so its running total could be at ¥400 million ($4.0 million) or better. An opening on this level should get it around the ¥2 billion ($20 million) milestone, as long as WOM isn't poor, and so far audience scores don't suggest as such. Japan should see no trouble in being the reboot's best international market.
Weekend Estimates will be posted early tomorrow.

(C)2016 TOHO CO.,LTD.Weekend Estimates (08/20-21)01 (02) ¥349,000,000 ($3.5 million), -18%, ¥4,350,000,000 ($42.5 million), Shin Godzilla (Toho) WK4 02 (01) ¥331,000,000 ($3.3 million), -29%, ¥2,215,000,000 ($22.0 million), The Secret Life of Pets (Toho-Towa) WK2 03 (---) ¥225,000,000 ($2.2 million), 0, ¥400,000,000 ($4.0 million), Ghostbusters (Sony) NEW 04 (03) ¥199,000,000 ($2.0 million), -34%, ¥1,360,000,000 ($13.4 million), The Jungle Book (Disney) WK2 05 (---) ¥185,000,000 ($1.8 million), 0, ¥185,000,000 ($1.8 million), Yell for the Blue Sky (Toho) NEW 06 (04) ¥171,000,000 ($1.7 million), -40%, ¥5,975,000,000 ($58.0 million), Finding Dory (Disney) WK6 07 (05) ¥146,000,000 ($1.4 million), -47%, ¥4,425,000,000 ($42.7 million), One Piece Film Gold (Toei) WK5 08 (---) ¥100,000,000 ($1.0 million), 0, ¥175,000,000 ($1.7 million), Kizumonogatari Part 2: Passionate Blood (Toho Video Division) NEW 09 (07) ¥80,000,000 ($800,000), -38%, ¥980,000,000 ($9.7 million), Rudolph to Ippaiattena (Toho) WK3 10 (06) ¥67,000,000 ($670,000), -56%, ¥600,000,000 ($5.9 million), X-Men: Apocalypse (Fox) WK2>Shin Godzilla appears to have reclaimed its throne atop the box office, and if the estimated sub-20% drop is accurate, it's an exceptional result coming out of the Obon Festival holidays. It's effortlessly exceeded the ¥4 billion milestone (its expected finish upon opening), and is going to cruise past the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone now, too.
Hideaki Anno's (Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi's reboot has enjoyed incredible WOM thanks to its strong critic and audience reception (some are calling it a masterpiece), so I wouldn't rule out a total over ¥6 billion ($60 million) yet either. And, if it does exceed ¥6 billion, its admissions could be high enough to make it the most-attended Godzilla film since 1966 - some 50 years ago!
>The Secret Life of Pets, appears, to have dropped to second place, but is continuing to perform very, very well. It's not going to quite match the success that was Minions, but it's on course for a total around the ¥4 billion ($40 million) milestone - making it the highest-grossing non-Disney/Pixar imported animated film in the market behind its studio predecessor.
>Ghostbusters debut in Japan, but after following an impressive marketing campaign, comes in a rather distant third place. The original was a massive success in Japan, the 5th highest-grossing film of all-time at the time of release, and inspired much material in the market, but this reboot was unable to capitalize on the franchise's success.
If it weren't for expectations, a debut over ¥200 million would be considered very strong for an imported comedy with a female cast (most imported comedies fail to make the Top 10), and while it's still decent enough... it's also a bit disappointing. I figure once its previews are taken into account, it'll be aiming for a total of ¥1.5 billion ($15 million), or slightly higher.
>Yell for the Blue Sky, directed by popular shojo manga director Takahiro Miki, is off to a respectable start. Legs for live-action shojo adaptations are generally strong, so this opening is more than enough to yield a total over ¥1 billion ($10 million), and gives it a slight chance at ¥1.5 billion ($15 million), as well.
>Finding Dory is unable to hold strong post the Obon Festival holidays, and falls further behind Monsters University. Summer Vacation will be coming to an end in two weeks, so it's losing any chance it may have had to make up ground. I'm actually not confident that it'll reach ¥8 billion ($75 million) after this weekend, and it could find itself finishing below Zootopia (¥7.8 billion) as well.
Japan will end up being its best international market, but it's finishing below expectations here for sure, which is worrying for a struggling Pixar Studios in the market if the sequel to their most-successful film is under-performing.
>One Piece Film Gold experiences a sizable drop post the holidays, but given it enjoyed an increase last weekend, a big drop this week was to be expected. It's edging closer to the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone, and should finish slightly above that mark with ¥5.1/5.2 billion ($51/52 million).

And since it's showing no signs of slowing down post-Summer, already at a multiplier of 7, too, it's very likely to exceed 4 million admissions. If it breaks 4 million admissions, it'll just have to beat Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster's 4.21 million admissions to become the most-attended Godzilla film in 50 years.

You mean it will have to beat Godzilla vs. Mothra's 4.2m admissions to become the most-attended Godzilla in 50 years.
