The only movie I see with a chance of beating it any time soon is Justice League if BvS is well received. I think one of the Star Wars films has the best shot. Star Wars fans are nuts so they will rush out for midnight. I think Star Wars would have to open to over 150 million for this to happen, which is unlikely in December. That would set it up for a gross of around 600 million, which I would say is unlikely at this point. To me if it opens to over 150 it will still be frontloaded. Star Wars is a different beast than any other film that has ever opened in December. Also you have to consider the sequels, they could open in the summer. We will have to see. I still think that these new Star Wars films will have legs on par with the Hobbit movies. Star Wars has never been a very front loaded franchise. It likely won't fall more than 40% weekend 2.

Re: Harry Potter 8's Midnight FOREVER
Midnight Record is not going down any time soon.
TDKR was so hyped and it did 30 million.
I think only chance is opening day record going down and I think only TA2 has a good shot at that as the last one did 81 million.

Midnight record is never gping down because we don't have any "real" midnight showings anymore. Most start at 8 pm or 10 pm.

I still don't think TA2 will get the midnight record. The OD might fall though.

I said nothing about the OD record never be broken. Obviously some superhero movie like Avengers 2 or Justice League 2 will beat it. But it is the late night record that I think will never fall.

Re: Harry Potter 8's Late night FOREVER
I wouldn't bet on any film breaking the midnight or opening day record anytime soon. It's going to require a new 4-quadrant appealing franchise with a huge fanbase gathered over multiple years to do it.
A future Star Wars film may have potential, but a lot will have to go right to get old fans on board again. The new films will have to be excellent.
The superhero movies are too family appealing to create the amount of buzz required to do it. You don't see millions of fans waiting in line for hours before the first showings or camping outside the theater in costume for them.

Re: Harry Potter 8's Late night FOREVER
Well TA got to 81 million with far less hype then TA2 will get.
So I think we have a chance next may and then likely not for some time.

Still think Star Wars is the best shot. Do we know if it will open on Friday or not yet?

The only chance of this falling is Star Wars 7.
I have hopes that they'll do the actual midnight showings and not the early showings.

Re: Harry Potter 8's Late night FOREVER
Never doubt SW, ROTJ is still the most impressive opening of all time. Sith's 50 million OD was ridiculous at the time. That 16 Preview lasted 3 years. The great thing about SW midnights is it brings out the freaks sure, but it also brings out all kinds of casual movie goers.

Yeah the star wars fans are crazy. They show up opening day to huge numbers. I remember how big Sith's midnights were. And then you have the return of Han, Luke, and Leia. I can see it being big.

Re: Harry Potter 8's Late night FOREVER
So people think the opening day record will fall in December but not by a film in May that already opened to 11 million already below the record? That is world of kj for you

It will depend on what Avengers 2 does. I just see teh fans rushing out like they have in the past. The prequels could have opened even higher if Lucas wasn't picky about movie theater quality. I don't think Disney will be picky.

Ultron = 100m+ opening day locked
Force Awakens = 70m-100m opening day(will destroy December record), I personally hope it clears 100m.

Mark my words, a WWW thread will be made for Star Wars when it opens to just 125 million in December.

Re: Harry Potter 8's Late night FOREVER
While I have no problem with Harry Potter 8 holding this record forever, I do have a problem with no midnight premieres anymore. It's just not the same. I had so much fun going to midnight shows in the 2000's. Every Harry Potter movie since Chamber of Secrets, every LOTR movie, and many others. The crowd for the midnights was so pumped up, with these 8pm shows that excitement is diluted by average moviegoers. It really kinda sucks.
As for opening day, though it's really not fair because they start earlier on Thursday and still roll them into Friday, I'd say Avengers 2 and Star Wars VII both have realistic shots at the opening day record.
