Sherlocke Holmes i see playing to more mature audiences, and should do similar to National Treasure numbers at best i think.

But still nothing has ever stopped Russians from good entertainment, so I wouldn't care so much about the temperature. If Avatar has problems with the reception - the weather won't matter. P.S. Holmes is one of the fundamental characters in our culture + Guy Ritchie is one of the most respected directors here + the movie has the best release pattern of the year. For the first time the entire country is having holidays from December 31st to January 10th, Non-Stop, so event films will benefit hugely. It's not a coincidence that distributors have put Holmes on that release date - they anticipate it to be big, and since Holmes really has a universal appeal for all audiences, unlike other big movies of the season, I think they might be right.

Before this year there were officially several work days. This time it's gonna be all holidays because few days were carried over, so from 2010 it's full 10 days.

Quote: "Meanwhile an AMC Entertainment spokesman tells EW: “Right now, Avatar is selling well, and is on about the same pace as we saw with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." Quote: Advance ticketing for James Cameron's sci-fi actioner "Avatar" is skewing heavily toward male moviegoers, but sales are going so strongly that it shouldn't represent a problem. The pricey Fox pic's theatrical run is targeting a broad range of demos, but online ticketer MovieTickets said Wednesday that a whopping 78% of "Avatar" ticket buyers have been males. Quote: MovieTickets said 89% of advance sales have been for performances in 3D venues. Quote: Advance ticketing also is going strong overseas. Quote: mark(insidekino) is expecting only 800-850k ow admissions in germany i hope it can crack 1 million but I won't be surprised. WOM needs to be really good if it wants to do $500+M overseas. I am sure with Christmas legs it can do that.

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Avatar is doing quite well in its first full day. Most sessions this evening are 80-90%+ with many of the bigger cinemas having about 10 sessions per day.
THis definaetly has the buzz allright and everyone is aware of this.
Definately an opening above AUD$8m is assured i think.

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
you were not too optimistic couple of days back but 1M+ is definitely good news. cine-director is estimating 2M admissions in france for the opening week. hope that happens. http://www.cine-directors.net/boxbis.htm

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
James Cameron’s 3D epic Avatar (pictured) has grossed a $1m in advance ticket sales through London’s British Film Institute IMAX cinema alone. It comes ahead of the film’s release tomorrow (December 17). At midday today (December 16), the cinema had sold 47,487 tickets for screenings which, according to Twentieth Century Fox, is more advance tickets than any other outlet in the world across all formats – 2D, 3D Digital and IMAX 3D. The cinema is staying open 24 hours a day for the four days to cope with demand, with screenings taken place at 12.20am and 3.40am. Avatar has beaten the cinema’s previous advance sales record of 37,929 for The Dark Knight in July 2008. http://www.screendaily.com/news/distrib ... 35.article

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
I'm afraid results from Europe will be a bit subdued this weekend... Snow in London, Paris, Madrid, Venice, Vienna, actually it will snow A LOT all over the continent this weekend and maybe for the whole week...

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Ya things are not looking good opening weekend wise due to the weather. Also, I am not sure if it will have great hold next weekend due to Sherlock holmes.
Anyways I am hoping it puts out some good numbers this weekend.

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
Quote: Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) -- “Avatar,” James Cameron’s 3-D science-fiction movie, is set to break Russia’s box office record, judging by viewer interest and screen bookings, industry research group Booker’s Bulletin said.
“It will definitely surpass the $50 million record,” said Boris Babushkin, editor of Moscow-based Booker’s magazine, by phone today from Yekaterinburg, central Russia.
The movie opened in Moscow last night and will play on a record 1,330 screens across the former Soviet Union, not counting Ukraine and the Baltic states, said Sergei Lavrov, chief statistician at Kinobusiness Today magazine. Lavrov expects “Avatar” to pull in $60 million, mainly from Russia.
News Corp.’s Twentieth Century Fox and partners Dune Entertainment and Ingenious Film Partners have spent an estimated $380 million to make and market “Avatar,” which was shot using a dual-camera 3-D system that Cameron, 55, invented with partner Vince Pace after the director’s success with “Titanic.” That film, released in 1997, is the all-time top- grossing film with $1.8 billion, according to Box Office Mojo.
Only about 300 of the 1,330 screens that will show “Avatar” in Russia and neighboring countries are equipped for 3-D, which may hurt sales, Lavrov said. The current records for both screens and ticket sales is held by the 2007 domestic comedy “Irony of Fate 2,” which played in 1,100 theaters and grossed more than $49 million, he said. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid= ... wISjdbUdVY
