And there's no slump... last week was up from the same weekend last year....this weekend will probably come close if both movies can do over $20 million (which doesn't seem to be happening). I think next week with Da Vinci and Over the Hedge will beat Star Wars EP3 weekend and then Memorial Day, fuggedaboutit! Poseidon seems to have tanked, but I don't think we'll necessarily carry over the rest of summer... it's pretty scary though, again, considering how many people I know who told me they wanted to see Poseidon.

I don't see how that can be because GHOST WORLD had amazing reviews and this has relatively poor ones ;). I LOVED GHOST WORLD and it's one of my favorite films, but ART SCHOOL looks terrible! It looks like it should have been called National Lampoon's ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL and been released STV.

He just means that all of the disappointments and underperformers don't bode well for the rest of the movies coming out this summer. The Box Office is in a slump, and they're going to have to turn all theaters into IMAX ones or something to make the moviegoing experience an amazing one again and worth dishing out the money to go.

Thate statement is wrong in so many ways. Two bad weeks does not equate to a slump at all.

This slump mentality is annoying. These two bombs don't surprise me at all, in fact I was predicting them. These are the type of movies that did poorly last summer, but from TDVC to Pirates you have a great lineup.

The Box Office has been in a slump for awhile now and keeps getting weaker and weaker, it's not just these two weeks.

2006 is ahead of 2005 by 5%, and it's getting better and better each day.

How is that a slump?

Poseidon
7:00 show, 300-seat auditorium, only about 40 people.

Trailers
The Lake House
Superman Returns
Invincible
Lady in the Water
The Devil Wears Prada

Movie
And here we have Poseidon, one of the most hysterically awful, unintentionally funny features I have seen in years. The movie has two things going for it - periodically dazzling special effects and moments where all I could do was say "what the hell?!" and giggle. Oddly, there is hardly any set-up at the beginning of the movie; it almost felt like it just started with the wave hitting the cruise liner (there isn't even set-up for the wave itself, you hear someone go "Oh my god!" and then it hits...exciting). The movie is excellent for about 5 minutes as the wave causes havoc in the boat and causes it to turn upside down (watching all the lights go out simultaneously as it is underwater is pretty breathtaking). Then, for an agonizing period of time, we watch a bunch of cardboard cut-out characters climb up things, climb across things, escape from water, hold their breath, hold their breath some more, climb up more things and get generally wet. Finally, Poseidon stumbles to a merciful end rather abruptly. Perhaps there would have been more excitement if screenwriter Mark Protosevich actually created characters that you either cared about or not wanted to shut up every time they spoke. I can only assume most of the actors in this movie participated because they thought it would be "fun" or they were in need of a paycheck - Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfuss, Jacinda Barrett, Emmy Rossum, Mike Vogel and Mia Maestro, among other cast members - seem to be doing the best they can with exceptionally cliched and dull characters. Under normal circumstances, I would probably grade this lower, but it did have good special effects and I did enjoy it in a "this is so, so, so bad" sort of way. D+

Why don't you see the movie before making assumptions? It is far from what you say it is and is actually a very good film that mixes many genres.

Personally, I totally agree with Mike, and I have seen both. Ghost World is one of my favorites, and Art School Confidential is so fucking weak it made me want to cry. Because I've loved every Zwigoff film.

You do the same thing with movies you don't want to see. And if it's actually a good movie they do a hell of a job of hiding it in the trailer because it couldn't be less unfunny. It seems nothing like Ghost World from them. I'll probably see it on DVD but I really doubt I'll like it.

The poor performance of this week's openers means Over the Hedge and Da Vinci will have no help from the holdovers next week. It's them only against the Sith. May the force be with them.

Well I don't think there's anything wrong with having an opinion about how a movie looks from the ads. How else are we going to anticipate some and dread others? If we didn't then we'd be seeing anything because it wouldn't matter since we don't have an opinion one way or another about how it looks. Everyone thinks some movies look really good and some look really bad, it's impossible not to when you've seen ads for them. You're bound to have some kind of opinion anyway. It's stupid when people say to see the movie before making assumptions when I'm just saying how I think it looks from the ads, and that is one way we sort out what we want to see from what we don't want to see.

Now knowing this movie was being absolutely destroyed in the reviews, how come you wasted your $$$ on this??? Do you see every new release that comes out every weekend??

No where in your review does it state you had no choice in this, even after reading it twice now, but that's alright.. It's not that big a deal..
