Is this an actual release date or just the start of a limited run to qualify for Oscars?

Looks like just a limited run because it says it's going wide on 2/2.

Great move for both. TNMT needed to get a headstart on Robertsons. Alex Rider also made a good move to a weaker weekend and further away from Open Season. Good stuff.

Actually bad stuff for STORMBREAKER it is being knocked down to Top 15 Markets only which pretty much means a sub-1000
theatre count release at best.

Resident Evil 3 and Untraceable is just an in-studio date swap to give RE3 the same date
it had for RE2.

They should stop fooling themselves and send D.O.A. S.T.V. What a self-prophetic title, BTW. The best since What's The Worst That Could Happen?.

Will there really be 7 new wide releases the weekend of 2/9? That must be some kind of record, if the release dates/patterns hold.

I was actually going to start a thread about that. There is a major GLUT of films coming in the first two months of 2007 - its a joke.
There are 7 that weekend and 4 the weekend before it and 4 the weekend after it. Its ridiculous. Especially because a fair few February films have great potential - Hannibal Rising, Norbit, Music & Lyrics, Superhero, Daddy's Little Girl, Ghostrider, Number 23 etc.
There are 57 wide releases scheduled for Jan-Mar 2007 vs 43 wide releases for the same period in 2006.

Some new dates:
Fox's comedy (spoof? I don't know) Epic Movie will open January 26.
Amy Heckerling's romcom I Could Never Be Your Woman will open wide February 14.
Jason Biggs-Isla Fisher romcom Pleasure Of Your Company will open wide March 16, as will Chris Rock's comedy I Think I Love My Wife.
Sports movie spoof The Comebacks will open wide March 23.
Lasse Hallstrom's Richard Gere drama The Hoax has been delayed from this November to April.
The Catherine Zeta-Jones remake of Mostly Martha (No Reservations) directed by Scott Hicks has moved from May 4 to July 27, probably in an effort to be "the" hit chick flick of next summer.
Nicole Kidman's alien thriller The Invasion will open August 17 next year.

I bet some of those March and February films will move to late April/summer. The April 27 date has 1 wide release right now.

3:10 to Yuma - 10/12/07
Bug - 2007 (from 12/1/06)
Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny - 11/22/06 (from 11/17/06)
Tenacious D moving to the 22nd makes five wide releases for that day (Bobby goes wide the next day too).

So much for Ashley Judd's "Oscar chances".

Hm, I wonder if 3:10 to Yuma is going to get pushed for Oscars. Russell Crowe, the director of Walk the Line, Lionsgate...

Offcourse they'll push it for oscar - if its good. Interesting that they decided to go for The Departed slot. Box Office and acclaim - a good strategy.

What is wrong with studios? Why are they hellbent on releasing every film under the sun in early February??
February 2
- Astronaut Farmer
- Because I Said So
- The Messengers
- Rogue
February 9
- Gustave
- Hannibal Rising
- The Hitcher
- Letters From Iwo Jima
- Norbit
- Superhero!
February 14
- I Could Never Be Your Woman
- Music & Lyrics
- Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls
February 16
- Breach
- Bridge to Terabithia
- Ghost Rider
16 films in 3 weekends!!!!
Good move for The Golden Compass. I was just thinking that it should move to get away from Beouwolf and Enchanted. Now I suspect the Water Horse will move back a week or two.
Hopfully they settle on a good release date for Mr Woodcock - it has potential to do well.

Ouch, there goes The Return. I can't remember the last time a wide release was delayed two weeks before opening.
