How in the hell in DAVC going to make $225-$250M? You need massive WOM for that. And yes, there have been movies that defied the critics, but when you go as low at 18% on RT, that's no fluke. There will be no WOM.

My prediction is that this is going to look like Matrix Revolutions, if they're lucky. $185M or so, at most.

How is there no WOM when the public hasn't seen it yet? And btw, the people who have seen it that enjoyed the book also, are raving about it.

kind of contraictory there, innit?

No. I'm just commenting that there are people that do like it. I am not equating that to WOM though Baba.

but the public has seen it if there are people who enjoyed the book are raving about it.

Not the public. The "raido hosts " and such who have had advanced screenings.

off topic but have ya noticed when a particular radio is promoting a film? like with prizes and stuff? When the hosts get to see the film, didja know they're obligated to say something nice about it. (i'm talking about the music stations, not the AM radio stuff).

Yep, I have noticed it. I guess they are obligated to say good things at times, especially if that studio bought airtime for the commericals and such.

Reloaded would be a better analogy for DVC. Revolutions was "dead" to begin with since Reloaded leaving a sour taste in so many people's mouths, DVC will open huge. I'm 95% sure it'll cross $200m.

If it makes 80-90 mill this weekend, then it will drop no more than about 40% next weekend, if the WOM is terrible. And if that is the case, then it will make about another 50 mill for the weekend. Add in the weekdays before next weekend, and the film is already going to be at about 155-160 mill. You honestly believe it will make 20 mill more and that's it? Be realistic.

Good analysis!

I raised The da vinci code from 66 million opening weekend to 72 million
190 million total

A film doesn't need massive good WOM to make over $200M, especially for summer. Jurassic Park: The Lost World is considered far inferior to its predecessor, but it is able to make $229 million based on the strength of its opening ($72m), even though its holds were only mediocre. If The Da Vinci Code makes over $80m this weekend, which all signs are indicating so, it will take some kind of toxic WOM to not make $230m, let alone $200m.

I must say that the media has done an excellent job at spreading the word about the bad reviews for this film. Just about every single person I saw today said, "I heard it sucked."

First B.O. Reports on Da Vinci Code

I'm told Sony/Imagine's The Da Vinci Code did "huge business" in Australia and New Zealand today (remember, they're 24 hours ahead), "pretty much smash openings" across the board in every foreign territory it opened so far, "incredibly well" in parts of Europe except France, where there was a major soccer match on Day #1 but the box office bounced back on Day #2. Britain's Sky News has been reporting good reaction from people coming out of screenings there. Early reports say the matinees out of New York City were "giant-sized." I've learned that Sony execs are "very happy." As for the rotten reviews, I hear the Sony suits are taking the attitude that the critics are out of touch with the public and counting on Da Vinci Code being reviewer-proof. I should be getting some numbers soon...

I'll stand by my predictions, though I never hesitate to remind everyone about my poor skills in the black art of BO prognostication. As per my review, I loved the actual movie, and hope it does well, but anyone can see that there are dark forces aligned against it's success.

At my Friday matinee screening, there were perhaps 75 people in a 500 seat theatre.

The Daily Star, The Sun and the Metro newspapers said the following....

1. Critics were laughing, leaving, boo-ing and hissing.
2. The reception of the movie was referred to as "Disasterous", "Monsterous" and "Horrific"
3. People who haven't read the book, will never find out what the hype is about.
4. Now, when the critic from The Sun thinks DaVinci Code, he'll picture a fat, sweaty, balding Tom Hanks.
5. Audrey Tautou delivers her lines like a 9 year old in a school play.
6. Critics laughed out loud at the "So, your related to Jesus" line.
7. Paul Bettany is the only saving grace, acting wise.

None of the above is my opinion.

Just taken from 3 UK newspapers.

However, one reviewer gave the film 8/10. The same reviewer who last week gave 'When A Stranger Calls (2006)' 7 out of 10. Take that as you will.

No problemo - I'm in the region of what you Terrans refer to as the Orion Nebula...

Meh, critics are overreacting, it wasn't that bad. Yeah, it draged a bit, some performances fell flat (however, interestingly, it wasn't Hank's underacting that cought my eyes but McKellen's occasional overacting), but following the story, the charecters how they unrevel these mysteries, all that secret society and history stuff and all, was quite intriguing (i have quite a soft spot for such things). It's not that much repeat-viewing friendly though, once you know the story (haven't read the book myself) you don't feel the need to see the movie again (at least for a while), because the story is the movie, that's what makes it (not some great performances or scenes in particular or whatever).

This BS about critics and their lame opinions is laughable. The film was everything I thought it would be and it went very quickly for an almost three hour film. That line about her being related to Jesus was not laughable, it was right in line with how it plays out in the book. Thsi was a very very well done film.

If it makes $85m this weekend, a 50% drop for the 3-Day weekend should be expected. That'll give it around $42.5m 3-Day and $53m 4-Day for Memorial Day weekend.
