I heard they pushed his name hevaily while markting TF in japan. oh well the sad thing is that they have delayed TF in india 5 times. Japan sucks

The still own America in smartness and technology. I think japanese don't like movies with ginat monsters, robots etc excpet Transformers. Hey atleast the movie managed $5 million OW. I am sure when all is said and done it will end up with 40-45 million there. Yes it could have been huge but what it will do is good and won't be as bad as king kong. That movie had a 2 million OW.

The problem with Japan's box office has a lot to do with the economic problems in the country.

It looks like HP5 will pass the 6m admissions mark in Germany either today or tomorrow and on Wednesday it should pass PIRATES 3 to become the biggest movie of the year... It will definitely pass the lifetime tally of HP3 (6.55m tix), right now HP5 seems like heading towards a 6.8m-7.0m tally...

August 11th in China. A lot of competition for screens from domestic films, but should still pass 100m RMB without problem.

Must be Jay Chou's pulling power in the asian regions...

Must be Jay Chou's pulling power in the asian regions... Yeah. "Secret" should be pretty frontloaded given its large fanbase. In Hong Kong as of Tuesday, it has made US$630,000 on 36 screens and good for #3 on the daily chart, decent for a Mandarin-language film.
It was a close race for #1 between Ratatouille and Transformers. Despite on fewer screens (40 v. 59), Ratatouille pulled ahead of Transformers on Tuesday's daily chart ($165,000 v. $158,000). The rat movie has made US$1,130,000 since opening last Thursday.
Opening against Ratatouille, Surf's Up was dead on arrival, making a paltry US$71,000 on 24 screens. Expect its quick exit from theaters come next week.
Three strong contenders opens in Hong Kong this Thursday. Hollywood pics The Simpsons Movie and The Bourne Ultimatum will compete with domestic actioner/gangster movie Flash Point, each having a similar screen number. It will be a three-way race. Can't wait for the numbers to come out...
By the way, HP5 has made US$6.3mil as of Tuesday, leading all of its precedessors in nominal price.
HP 1 --- US$5.58 mil HP 2 --- US$4.91 mil HP 3 --- US$4.32 mil HP 4 --- US$5.97 mil HP 5 --- US$6.29 mil (and counting)

HK Dollar is pegged to US Dollar so the exchange rate is always around US$1 = HK$7.78. Here are some comparisons (measured in unadjusted HKD): War of the World (2005) - $23.7m King Kong (2005) - $39.3m Chronicle of Narnia (2006) - $30.6m Superman Returns (2006) - $25.6m Night of the Museum (2007) - $37.2m Spider-man 3 (2007) - $55.0m Pirates 3 (2007) - $41.5m HP5 (2007) - $49.0m (and counting) Transformers (2007) - $30.5m (and counting)

Guess what? It was a photo finish between Flashpoint, The Simpsons, and Bourne. Opening on Thursday in Hong Kong, Flash Point made US$93,800 for a per screen average (PSA) US$2,500, beating The Simpsons Movie (also US$93,800; PSA US$2,300) by a razor-thin margin; the difference was only tens of US Dollar. Bourne was not far behind, making US$87,400 for a US$2,500 PSA.
However, none of the three openers managed to beat one-week-old Ratatouille. On Thursday alone, the rat movie added another US$108,000 (PSA $3,100) to finish on top again. So far, the movie has pocketed US$1,377,000 with plenty of legs to come.

Re: Harry Potter 5: OOTP (INTL.)
I was at least somewhat right about Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix being much bigger in Russia than the predecessor. Looks to me like it will finish in the $18-20 million range there which leads me to believe that the next Harry Potter will gross $25+ million there. The sinking grosses in Japan are alarming, though...

The sinking grosses in Japan are alarming, though... I would bet on the lower end in Russia. I think $20 m. is out of question already. No way it would be that high. 3 weeks have gone - time to die. Now it stands at $16.2 m. in CIS thanks to lack of competition (3 weeks on top - that's quite an achievement here!). Stardust opens this weekend: the premise is intriguing, the fantasy theme is appealing, the visuals are great, the trailer is super, the cast is swell and HP is for 3 weeks already - I might be wrong, but I really can see the potential here. And the next weekend is gonna be the rise of SIMPSONS, while Potter will be crashed (80% drop is not out of question). And the weekend after Bourne comes (the previous part wasn't a blockbuster, but you remember the rule for sequels in Russia: almost always bigger), so another 80% drop can happen. $18-18.5 m. total in CIS would be fine IMO, twice as much as HP4 took.

Yeah anything over 18 is awesome since it would be double GOF. I am curious to see what China does for OOTP. GOF did like a little over 10 million. I am hoping 15-20, but I wonder if the late release date will hurt it there.

I ask because of piracy issues or do you think those people probably wouldn't go to the movies anyway.

Look like the business for Saturday midnight was between SM3 and POTC3, so could have a $2-3m opening since it's only two days.
