Pirates is brilliant.

They have Johnny Depp AND Orlando Bloom... which will MAJORLY attract the girls... and they even have eye candy for the guys AND Johnny Depp to relate with!!!

Ugh.

It's going to be too big. I can't handle it.

What are you guys basing your comments on, about PotC1 having extraordinary word of mouth. Everywhere I look, I see it got great viewer ratings, but no better than the LotR or Spider-Man films. It has B+ at Yahoo, like the LotR films, the Spidey films, and SW Episode 3. At IMDB, it's at the bottom of the top 250 list.

It has the very highest B+ at yahoo. It's #8 all-time, which is extraordinary. IMDB is unreliable since it skews towards internet fans. I'd say it's just about useless in judging WOM. At yahoo it's far, far ahead of Spidey and SW Ep 3; you can't just use the grade. Films #8 to about #500 have a B+, and obviously #8 is worlds ahead.

Anyway, it has wider appeal then LOTR since it appeals more towards kids, and comedy fans. There are many people who only go to the movies to laugh. Why else did Shrek 2 earn more then any of the LOTR films. Don't tell me it was a fluke, it was predictable, but we just didn't know how to predict it so we didn't see it coming. That's what will take it to 500m.

I ask some people why they have not seen any X-Men or LOTR movies, or didn't like them (yes, it happens). They tell me they don't like sci-fi/fantasy or that they perfer comedy (especially women in both areas). I don't know anyone who says the same thing about POTC. It really is just about everyone's type of movie in some way or another.

Of course! It's got comedy, romance, action, adventure, fantasy/supernatural elements, some scary/horror elements, period costumes, and more! It covers just about any genre you could think of, really.

Because people remember disappointing sequels not matching the original's gross and are being cautious.

Why would people buy tickets so far in advance? I'm not questioning that post, Joy, I'm just saying in general. A month in advance? I don't know what my plans are for this weekend, let alone July 7.

You obvioulsy don't know what its like to be a hardcore fan.

Hell, I boughy my ROTS tickets 6 weeks before release. At that time, I didn't know what my plans were in May, but I did know what my plans were at midnight on May 19.

You both are WIMPS. Within 10 minutes of finishing FotR, there were folks arranging to take days off work two years in advance for RotK.

Weren't people camping for like 3 months straight for The Phantom Menace?

LotR fans would have camped out, but they, unlike Star Wars fans, had actual jobs. :nonono:

How dare you group PotC2 in with such bombs as LotR and Spidey and Ep 3?

Right now, I'm putting the PotC2 base figure at TTT numbers. WOM will take it either down to FotR or up to RotK.

I didn't speak of bombs or successes; I spoke of viewer ratings. Some people here talk about PotC's viewer ratings as if it was the holy grail itself, as if it was rated way beyond anything else. I just said that everywhere I look, I see it rated pretty high on all-time lists, but never WAY beyond everything else.

It may not be a great movie, but what it is is a fun summer movie that you go to a theatre, sit down, and you know you will have a good time. Jack Sparrow, I mean how can you not laugh at him..Girls will come to see Bloom, and some guys too see Knightly..It will attract about every guy from 11-18 in my opinion, and probably even way younger then that. Its a romance in a way, action, comedy, and family movie...It was something for everyone, that is why this movie will be so great...I personally dont think this movie will be better then the first, but it will gross it, and be a great movie...Jack Sparrow..you can't beat that...

To be honest, I had the this-will-be-better-than-the-original feeling when I saw the theatrical trailer. I just think its story would have more substance. That being said, I think it'll be smarter than most summer blockbusters, which it will benefit on.

If the rest of this movie is half as funny as the clip I saw today during the MTV Movie Awards Pre Show this movie will be huge. All I can say Captain Jack is back and better than ever.

I'm still waiting to see that clip; I don't have MTV anymore, so I'm relying on fellow PotC fans to get it online (and since it's so late now, I'm guessing they'll have it up tomorrow).

But we do have a new TV spot, too! And pretty great and funny one at that.

Here's the link to the TV spot, courteous of captainjacksparrow on Johnny Depp Reads:

Excellent TV spot. I love how they relived the slap moments of the first movie, and this time it's with Will.
