Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (Rurouni Kenshin Atta
Weekend Results [08/02-03]:

Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains Weekend Admissions [08/02-03]
159,321 - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (NEW)
89,072 (-36%) - Godzilla (Week 2)
63,149 (-22%) - Maleficent (Week 5)
47,686 (-16%) - Memories of Marnie (Week 3)
46,760 (-16%) - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Week 3)
20,371 (-57%) - Eight Ranger 2 (Week 2)
16,154 (-22%) - Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Week 3)
14,906 (-24%) - Say, "I Love You" (Week 4)
8,648 (-27%) - Planes: Fire & Rescue (Week 3)
7,943 (-36%) - Edge of Tomorrow (Week 5)

Rurouni Kenshin beat Godzilla's opening weekend by 15% at these four chains (reminder: they represent ~40% of the market) and very likely performed better at Aeon Cinemas, the biggest chain, that isn't tracked.

I'm thinking Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc more than likely exceeded 400,000 admissions over the weekend, which should earn it ¥550-600 million ($5.5-6.0 million), and a 3-day total of ¥750-800 million ($7.5-8.0 million) and 600-650,000 admissions.

If it does open around those figures, it'll be one of the biggest local openings of all-time that hasn't been released by Toho. There are some bigger local openings by non-Toho distributors from animated titles like One Piece or Evangelion, but as far as live-action films go... I believe it's the biggest since the second Death Note film, also distributed by Warner Bros., in 2006, so nearly a decade.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc should be aiming for ¥4.0 billion+ ($40 million+) based on these numbers.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Studio Ghibli Closure
So not long ago, Toshio Suzuki, general manager and former producer of Studio Ghibli, announced that they would no longer be making feature films and are closing their animated film department.

Memories of Marnie, currently in theaters, will be their final film and they'll proceed to manage their trademarks/copyrights from now on.

It's unfortunately not unexpected. There was talk that the studio would stop making films after Ponyo, but the company decided to proceed with their 5-year plan in which two films would be made by the new blood, and two films by the co-founders. It was speculated they'd stop producing films at this point, but then Memories of Marnie was announced.

It'll be interesting to see if this announcement will affect the box-office of Memories of Marnie, seeing as how it's the last time anyone will see a Studio Ghibli film in theaters again.

Studio Ghibli employees work year-round, almost every day making films, and their films are the most-expensive to produce in Japan. The budgets for their last few films have been rumored to be as much as ¥5 billion ($50 million) or more, which is almost impossible to make any profit on. Even The Wind Rises, which earned over ¥12 billion ($123 million), still hasn't turned profit despite being on DVD already, too.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Studio Ghibli Announces Closure
Weekend Estimates (08/02-03)

01 (--) ¥647 million ($6.3 million), 0, ¥860 million ($8.4 million), Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros.) DEBUT
02 (01) ¥317 million ($3.0 million), -38%, ¥1.48 billion ($14.5 million), Godzilla (Toho) Week 2
03 (02) ¥222 million ($2.1 million), -26%, ¥4.55 billion ($44.8 million), Maleficent (Disney) Week 5
04 (03) ¥185 million ($1.7 million), -16%, ¥1.42 billion ($13.9 million), Memories of Marnie (Toho) Week 3
05 (04) ¥170 million ($1.6 million), -15%, ¥1.40 billion ($13.6 million), Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Toho) Week 3
06 (06) ¥61 million ($0.6 million), -26%, ¥520 million ($5.0 million), Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Toei) Week 3
07 (05) ¥54 million ($0.5 million), -57%, ¥300 million ($2.9 million), Eight Ranger 2 (Toho) Week 2
08 (07) ¥50 million ($0.4 million), -25%, ¥750 million ($7.3 million), Say, "I Love You" (Shochiku) Week 4
09 (08) ¥37 million ($0.3 million), -33%, ¥1.47 billion ($14.3 million), Edge of Tomorrow (Warner Bros.) Week 5
10 (10) ¥32 million ($0.3 million), -29%, ¥310 million ($3.0 million), Planes: Fire & Rescue (Disney) Week 3

>That's huge for Rurouni Kenshin 2. Its chance at reaching ¥5 billion ($50 million) are becoming more likely, which is pretty insane, as that'll rank it among the highest-grossing local non-Toho live-action films of all-time. And this is just Part 1 of the sequel. Part 2 opens in 7 weeks. Warner Bros. has found their Harry Potter replacement at last it seems.

>Godzilla has a decent second weekend hold and should reach ¥3 billion ($30 million) or slightly more.

>Maleficent is still doing well and remains the strong favorite to win the Summer with ¥6-6.5 billion ($60-65 million).

>Memories of Marnie has an excellent third weekend hold after a rough second week. It's still likely to earn ¥3.5-4 billion ($35-40 million), but with the announcement of Studio Ghibli's closure, it may receive a box-office boost since it's the last time audiences will see a Ghibli film in theaters.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Studio Ghibli Announces Closure
Yeah, it seems everyone misunderstood what Toshio Suzuki actually meant with the "closure" announcement. He really said the studio is basically going on "hiatus" and halt feature film production to evaluate where to take the company from here. They've taken some pretty significant hits over the past few years. So it's going to be awhile before we see anything after Memories of Marnie.

I really, really hope they don't decide to go the CGI route in the future. It would be a lot cheaper for them, but...

Weekend Ranking [08/02-03]

Image

01 (--) Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros.) DEBUT
02 (01) Godzilla (Toho) Week 2
03 (02) Maleficent (Disney) Week 5
04 (03) Memories of Marnie (Toho) Week 3
05 (04) Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Toho) Week 3
06 (06) Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Toei) Week 3
07 (07) Say, "I Love You" (Shochiku) Week 4
08 (05) Eight Ranger 2 (Toho) Week 2
09 (10) Planes: Fire & Rescue (Disney) Week 3
10 (08) Edge of Tomorrow (Warner Bros.) Week 5

>Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc delivered the biggest-opening for a local live-action film since 2012's Bayside Shakedown: The Final.

The first half of the two part sequel opened to ¥592,235,030 ($5.8 million) with 433,346 admissions on 439 screens. This is a 48% increase over the opening of the first film, and the biggest-opening for Warner Bros. since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in 2011.

After 3-days in release, Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc earned a huge ¥822,734,430 ($8.0 million) with 645,086 admissions. A total of ¥4-5 billion ($40-50 million) and 3-4 million admissions is likely.

>Godzilla held quite well in its second weekend, dropping just 33% to gross ¥343,383,000 ($3.3 million) with 227,594 admissions. After 10-days in release, the film has exceeded ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) and 1 million admissions. There should be nothing from stopping the film from reaching ¥3 billion+ ($30 million+) now.

>Memories of Marnie begins to show its staying power, dipping only 17% during its third weekend. Pokemon XY also held really well, dropping a mere 16% in its third weekend. Both holds are encouraging after disappointing starts as Obon Week draws closer.

>Frozen wasn't able to resurface back in the Top 10, but remained steady in 11th place. After 21 weeks, it's now earned ¥25.30 billion ($248.2 million) and 19.92 million admissions.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Ranking (Rurouni Kenshin 2)
Now that it's really unlikely we're going to have a ¥1 billion opener this year, here's a summary of the remaining films this year, and currently scheduled or unannounced films for 2015, that have potential to do it:

2014:
Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Sept. 13th) - Very Unlikely. Local live-action films opening so high is incredibly rare (has only happened twice, ever).

Parasyte Beast Part 1 (Nov. 29th) - Very Unlikely. Local live-action films opening so high is incredibly rare (has only happened twice, ever).

Yokai Watch (Dec. 20th) - Unlikely, but a possible giveaway gives it potential. The franchise has blown up this past year, so it's one to keep an eye on from now on.

Big Hero 6 (Dec. 20th) - Unlikely, but the current goodwill of Disney also gives it potential. Having a Japanese (half?) main character, and a Tokyo inspired setting could create additional interest in this one, too.

2015:
Dragon Ball Z (Golden Week) - Unlikely, but any possible giveaway gives it potential.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron (Golden Week) - Very Unlikely. It'd require a 100% increase over the first film (more in admissions), and the sequels to Thor and Captain America barely increased over their predecessors this past year.

Cinderella (May) - Unlikely. Maleficent couldn't do it after following Frozen and with Angelina Jolie, so this is unlikely. But, Disney is a powerhouse right now and Cinderella is an incredibly known property.

Jurassic World (TBD) - Unlikely. While the first two films, especially the first, was a huge success, the third film dropped nearly 50% from the second. There is the potential for a sizable opening, though.

Attack on Titan Part 1/Part 2 (July/August) - Likely. There will more than likely be something given to attendees, making these likely. They'd have potential regardless, too, considering how massive the franchise is.

Untitled Mamoru Hosoda film (July) - Unlikely.. maybe. He hasn't announced any film for next year yet, but with Miyazaki retired and Studio Ghibli going on hiatus, and given how popular Hosoda has become among critics and general audiences, his material will receive even more interest now, so there's potential.

One Piece (December) - Very Likely. The last two films films have done so, with the last film even breaking the opening weekend admissions record for a local film, so this is probably a 99% lock. But it hasn't been officially announced yet.

Star Wars Episode VII (Dec. 18th) - Very Likely. All the prequel films opened above 1 billion, so this is also a 99% lock of happening. But I think it's getting delayed.

Evangelion 4.0 (TBA) - Likely. There hasn't been an announcement yet, and the only reason I'm not saying Very Likely is because the last film received mixed responses. But the fanbase is definitely there, and the final film factor would likely get it there.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Lawson to acquire United Cinemas
Japan's Lawson to acquire United Cinemas in ~$100 million deal.

Quote:
Convenience store chain Lawson is set to acquire Japan’s third largest theatre operator United Cinemas in a deal thought to be worth around $100m by the end of the month.

Ranked after Toho Cinemas and Aeon Entertainment, United Cinemas operates 36 theatres with 331 screens.

Having acquired music and film retailer HMV Japan in 2010, Lawson has been selling concert and cinema tickets as well as music and film merchandise through subsidiary Lawson HMV Entertainment.

Lawson, Inc. announced yesterday (Aug 6) that it has authorized Lawson HMV Entertainment, Inc. to acquire shares in United Entertainment Holdings Co., Ltd., the holding company for United Cinemas Co., Ltd. with funds serviced by Advantage Partners, LLP.

The share transfer is set to be completed on August 28. Advantage Partners acquired its United Cinema shares in 2012 from trading house Sumitomo Corp.

The deal is estimated to be worth around JPY10bn ($97.7m).

Lawson’s post-acquisition initiatives include encouraging customers to “frequent all our services across Lawson stores, HMV stores, E-commerce and movie theaters”, offering special privileges to their approximately 64 million Ponta point reward card members, and promoting live broadcast events in their cinemas.

Lawson is the second-largest convenient store franchise in Japan after 7-Eleven with nearly 10,000 locations, and has been a major player for movie studios for years by selling exclusive merchandise at their locations or even setting ups shops at various cinemas for some movies (big merchandise movers like Evangelion for example) opening weekend/week.

United Cinemas is the distant 3rd largest cinema chain in Japan, but Lawson could make them a more popular choice for moviegoers than before via exclusive merchandise, so it's going to be interesting to see how this acquisition develops.

There's a Lawson store literally anywhere you turn, and half the country has a Lawson membership card, too, which they'll now get more rewards/points from by purchasing movie tickets at their theaters. This will be interesting.

10 (07) ¥36 million ($0.3 million), -37%, ¥390 million ($3.7 million), Eight Ranger 2 (Toho) Week 3

There's a typhoon hitting Japan this weekend so the drops may end up slightly higher, but morning ticket sales look fine to me. And unless it's a huge storm that effects central Japan (70/80% of the box-office comes from here), very, very few storms ever affect the box-office really.

>Stand By Me, Doraemon beat Transformers: Age of Extinction yesterday by approx. 40%(!), so it's very likely to go on to win the weekend, too. It's currently outpacing Transformers by about 2:1 today. And although Transformers will narrow the gap in the evening/night; this is the first 3D Doraemon film in the franchise, and it appears to be bringing in more than just kids/families judging by yesterday's evening/night business.

And it helps to have acclaimed upcoming director Yamazaki Takashi (Always, The Eternal Zero) directing the film, too, to encourage adults to attend.

Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains Saturday Admissions (08/09)
89,145 - Stand By Me, Doraemon (NEW)
58,488 - Transformers: Age of Extinction (NEW)

50,573 (-34%) - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Week 2)

5,097 (-46%) - Eight Ranger 2 (Week 3)
4,625 (-25%) - Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Week 4)

>Just wow at Stand By Me, Doreamon... it may be aiming for the biggest debut of the year.

It's Saturday is approx.:

+17% higher than Rurouni Kenshin 2
+27% higher than Godzilla
+53% higher than Pokemon XY

And its Saturday was probably even deflated slightly due to the Typhoon, so Sunday should come in even higher than it normally would have (pre-sales already look well ahead of yesterday's).

I'm thinking a debut around ¥700-800 million ($7-8 million), and with such a huge debut and Obon Week coming up, it'll become Maleficent's challenger for biggest Summer 2014 release with ¥5 billion ($50 million+) very likely.

>Transformers: Age of Extinction is about 15% behind Godzilla's opening right now, so maybe ¥425-450 million ($4.2-4.5 million) for it over the weekend. If it has a stronger than expected Sunday, too, though, it could reach ¥500 million ($5 million). It's on track to debut 15-25% behind Transformers: Dark of the Moon at the moment.

>Also, great hold for Marnie. It may increase this weekend.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (Doraemon smashes Dino B
Stand By me, Doraemon is gigantic so far today. It's looking at perhaps a 25/30% increase over Saturday, which makes earning the biggest opening weekend of the year likely.

And it's heading into the biggest week at the box-office (Obon), too, after such a huge opening weekend. It sort of reminds me of Spider-Man 3 when it debuted to a massive first week when opening over Golden Week in 2007.

64,093 - Transformers: Age of Extinction (NEW)

54,326 (-32%) - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Week 2)
28,221 (-18%) - Maleficent (Week 6)
26,413 (-47%) - Godzilla (Week 3)
24,270 (-04%) - Memories of Marnie (Week 4)
18,950 (-17%) - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Week 4)
7,117 (-46%) - Eight Ranger 2 (Week 3)
7,110 - Space Brothers 0 (NEW)
5,280 (-28%) - Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Week 4)

Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains Weekend Admissions (08/09-10)
201,057 - Stand By Me, Doraemon (NEW)
117,605 - Transformers: Age of Extinction (NEW)

110,505 (-31%) - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Week 2)
51,253 (-19%) - Maleficent (Week 6)
46,220 (-48%) - Godzilla (Week 3)
44,783 (-06%) - Memories of Marnie (Week 4)
36,755 (-21%) - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Week 4)
17,602 - Space Brothers 0 (NEW)
11,473 (-44%) - Eight Ranger 2 (Week 3)
11,162 (-31%) - Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Week 4)

>Stand By Me, Doraemon nearly matched the combined admissions of Transformers: Age of Extinction and Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc, and it probably beat them both combined once Aeon Cinemas is factored in.

And considering both Transformers and Kenshin should be over ¥400 million this weekend, then Doraemon likely broke ¥800 million ($8 million) or came really, really close. And it also opened on Friday, which was also a big day for it, and may result in a 3-day total above ¥1 billion ($10 million+). The last film to break ¥1 billion in 3 days was The Wind Rises last year.

Stand By Me, Doraemon is pretty much the film this Summer has been waiting for.

I'll have Weekend Estimates up a little later.

It's just another Transformers movie without the benefit of the 3D boom (shares were 70/80% in 2010-2011, but are now 20/30%) or a favorable exchange rate.

And the dropoff only looks harsh in USD, mostly. The films range from $24-55 million at the box-office, but their admissions are all pretty close (the 1st film has the most).
