Re: The Avatar Prediction | Tracking Thread
I'm so on the fence with this one. My gut is telling me to underpredict this one, but not having one opener to get $25 m + since 4 weeks ago only helps it out even more, especially with 2012 being the last action film. I'm going to go with my gut and rely on Google trends for this one's opening weekend.
I'm seeing monster legs on this one though. While I'm predicting under $60 m ow, I could see potential for a 6.0 multiplier...

Not a single local midnight sell-out thus far, including IMAX.

Re: The Avatar Prediction | Tracking Thread
There are no midnights in this area.
Edit: there are two, but they aren't sold out.

Bryan_smith wrote: Avatar, midnight screening. 3D About 150 people in a 200 seater theatre. That's a little better than the Watchmen midnight showing at the same theatre.
The film was nothing short of magnificent. After watching it, I no longer care how much the film actually makes, I am just thankful that it was made. I would indeed classify it as a game changer.
I personally thought there was nothing wrong with the story, and in fact, I would say it was better story telling than Titantic. But the visuals are by far what make the movie, and they are spectacular, from beginning to end.
There were indeed cheers and clapping at the end of the film, and most the chatter I heard was about what an achievement the film was. One guy was saying something like it wasn't even like watching a movie, it was like experiencing it. I myself would not have gone that far to say that, but yes, I would not be surprised if James Cameron wins his second Oscar for Direction with this film.
A+ QFT this review has me totally pumped

For this movie to crack 90 Million this weekend, WOM would have to reflect that of what an "event movie" is supposed to feel like and this isn't it.. I was right about WATCHMEN tanking and I'll be right about AVATAR being a sheer disappointment this weekend to..

Re: The Avatar Prediction | Tracking Thread
What is your top choice to see this weekend (Dec. 18-20)? 80.2% Avatar 4.0% No interest this weekend. 3.5% The Princess and the Frog 2.5% The Blind Side 2.2% New Moon 1.7% Invictus 1.6% Other 1.5% 2012 1.3% Did You Hear About the Morgans? 0.6% Armored 0.5% A Christmas Carol 0.3% Brothers 0.1% Old Dogs
2,120 users polled.
one of three films to reach 80% first choice, the other two made over 150m, I'm now calling for 100m+

Re: The Avatar Prediction | Tracking Thread
Yeah even with a 70 million opening weekend, it could easily get 2 more weekends over 35 million.

Re: The Avatar Prediction | Tracking Thread
After seeing the film, I'd say it certainly won't become another Titanic. It's much more in the vein of LOTR and other fantasy or sci-fi type of films. The love story or screenplay isn't strong enough for getting repeated viewings from females. Still crossing $300m though, but not $400m+.
