Expectations went wrong and people forgot including myself 150/408 in 2D is huge.

Who wisely predicted a total of 410 million over in MGKC's fall/winter game? Oh, I see. I did.

I held out as long as I could, BJ. I thought of old ladies playing cards and Christmas Eves spent in church, but then it just...happened.

The fact that Avatar needed an IMAX re-release to get past $750 million was pretty pathetic.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
Avatar did miss out on $3 billion and Titanic missed out on $2 billion without its re-release. Those classify as disappointments.
James Cameron's next film will need to open with $3 billion to meet anyone's expectations...

Its first week has been huge, though I still believe CF will struggle to make 400m

With these numbers it will make $400m regardless so there is nothing really wrong with it and that's the whole point

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
Nothing wrong but wont beat the hunger games in admissions and wont make 450m
It couldnt even beat IM3
So let's see if I'm wrong in the end

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
While I did join $450m so I might not be the right person to argue here but its a sequel to a HUGE surprise blockbuster original. Even if didn't increase too much from the original if this crosses $400m it will be the VERY first sequel of an original to do it....that's a HUGE deal.

MadGez wrote: For those who are disappointed, what was you expectation for final gross? Really for this film anything between 350-450m total would be in the normal expected range.
And it's going to end up in that range. So nothing went wrong. Just sayin.

Magnus wrote: to actually be serious, what went wrong is that the film just wasn't that frontloaded as expected. The film will end up with a total around most reasonable expectations. It just is going to be much leggier than expected. It's end IM will be very close to HG (and potentially slightly better). Most people didn't see that coming. I'm pretty sure nobody saw that coming. What was the last first sequel to match or surpass the legs of the original? It also goes to show just how abnormally frontloaded the Twilight franchise was. The first film in that franchise fell 62% over Thanksgiving weekend, while Catching Fire (a sequel) is on track to drop less than 55%. And it should also have stronger legs than any of that franchise's sequels from this weekend onward.
