Amazing how such a big gamble for Fox ended up paying off in spades. Ang Lee must be so happy. While LOP B.O is very impressive it was based on a popular book, so it did have a hook. I don't think the fan base of LoP can be compared to those of Twilight, HP, LotR and other popular book adaptations. Certainly they didn't make this movie thinking fan base is enough to cover cost.

Nazgul9 wrote: Avatar should absolutely be in there. As well as many others. Just because it was successful and spawned sequels it shouldn't be excluded from the list. I agree. All (more or less) original movies should be there despite some of them spawning sequels. There's no reason to exclude the first movie in the series whatsoever. It was after all at that point an unproven and risky take.

Japan is still ahead, hm? Yeah, $600 million has a 90% chance of happening now.

Oh, ok...in that case, I don't think $600 million will happen. Should settle for $580-590 million.

Re: Life of Pi (INTL) $422m & counting
it will make at least 25M more in japan(may be 30 if its legs are great which is not far fetched). Other markets can add 30M more. It will make between 115-120M domestic. So 600M is probable at this point.
Also FOX reported 4.7M OW for Pi in japan. If that is accurate then 600M is a lock.

Re: Life of Pi (INTL) $422m & counting
$4.7 million would be the 3-day total. The actual opening weekend figures are seldom reported by the studios for Friday openers.
Still, it's an impressive number that will give it a $25-30 million range.

Probably another $50m worldwide might be out of reach, but congrats on an amazing run to around $580m worldwide.

Re: Life of Pi (INTL) $456m & counting
I made a "Over 500m WW club" for this at Boxoffice.com before the movie opened. Only 1 'In' (that was me), and 24 'Out'. That's what the Mortal Kombat announcer would call a flawless victory!

 Re: Life of Pi (INTL)
So looks like $475m though it could do a little more IMO if it wins many Oscars (or the most).

Insane numbers.
Only 12 non-sequels have ever made more overseas. ONLY TWELVE!

 Re: Life of Pi (INTL)
This should see a boost after receiving the most wins (4) of the Oscars, including Best Director.

Yes for a 2-hour serious movie with an unknown actor this is a HUGE total even with all the Oscar buzz.
