 Re: August 19-21 Predictions
Conan has the most promise of breakout potential IMO. It might not be as big as TE from last year, but if the reviews stay as good as they are now I could definitely see the older fans actually deciding to show up. With all the negativity this movie needs as much positive buzz as possible.

Maybe so, but it doesn't sound like the movie will be the EPIC! failure most people were expecting. I know it's still early which is why I said IF reviews stay as positive as they are now.

It reminds me a bit of that TMNT movie released back in March 2007. Opened at the top amongst a slew of competition but paled in comparison to the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies.

I'm hoping One Day at least opens to 7 Million. I've been seeing a bunch of TV spots and they're very appealing, IMO.

 Re: August 19-21 Predictions
They've struggled, IMO, to convey One Day's hook: revisiting the same two characters on the same day every year. Now they just seem to have stopped trying and are saying, "They might not always be together, but over the years, they'll always be there for each other."

I still believe it will appeal to its target audience.

 Re: August 19-21 Predictions
Of course, the awful reviews will probably drive away any senior appeal (the trailer looked to me like a film that appeals to older folks).

 Re: August 19-21 Predictions
"From the director of An Education" has to be good for at least 15 mil. opening weekend. Then maybe Anne Hathaway can bring in a few dollars.

 Re: August 19-21 Predictions
I would be disappointed if One Day wasn't good. I love the book.
But the ad campaign has been muted and I think it will get lost in The Help's shadow.

 Re: August 19-21 Predictions
I feel one line they've included in nearly every One Day trailer and TV spot is a bit spoiler-ish.

I actually think the ad campaign has been intriguing. I was interested in seeing the film until I heard it was terrible.

If you asked 100 people on the street if they'd seen An Education, how many do you think would have seen it? Without top notch reviews, which are fairly important to this movie's core audience, I can't see it climbing out of The Help's shadow. I would say the best comparison for this is The Time Traveler's Wife, based on a book, same time of year. It also had competition from a female skewing book adaptation Julie and Julia. One Day is getting about half the theater count of TTW, and The Help is more competition than J&J. I think a 5K pta is the high end here. That would probably give it around 8M for the weekend.

I wish we could see Richard Linklater take on such a novel idea... But sadly Boyhood won't be out until 2015! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1065073/

 Re: August 19-21 Predictions
I would pay a hundred bucks to see that film if Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy were the kid's parents.

 Re: August 19-21 Predictions
Well Ethan Hawke plays the Dad (I think) and Patricia Arquette is blond and more talented than she's given credit for, much like Delpy...
Okay, it's a stretch. But I do think Boyhood has the potential to be a masterpiece. At the very least it'll be a unique cinematic experience, but if it's really great it could give Richard Linklater some much needed clout. I'm still gutted that he wasn't able to get financing for Thats What I'm Talking About! his spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused to take place in the first day of college in the 80s.

 Re: August 19-21 Predictions
One Day I'll see a trailer for One Day. I've heard very little about this film, and I have not seen a single trailer for it. No, I'm not the target audience, but you'd think that by now I'd have seen at least something, somewhere.
So I went over to RT to sneak a peak at the early reviews. Not promising. It sounds like the chick flick release schedule dump of the year.

 Re: August 19-21 Predictions
I am surprised that One Day is faring behind Conan and Fright Night. I have no doubt Spy Kids will be a stinker so I don't care much, but I will be surprised if that has better reviews than One Day as well.

I expect One Day to have a bit of a boost once all reviews are in. Maybe around 35%.

 Re: August 19-21 Predictions
Still absolutely toxic.
Though I almost wonder if critics are being extra hard on it. Just a feeling. Because Hathaway is overexposed right now and because Lone Scherfig is a European favorite "going Hollywood" with this film. I can't imagine it being SO bad, y'know?
