While I do agree that Pirates and Panda will do tons more in OS, the later is doing disastrous domestically.

Re: KUNG FU PANDA 2: The Kaboom Of Doom (INTL.)
I personally think both are doing badly domestically. KFP2 will drop perhaps to $190 m from $215 m of the original. POTC 4 will drop to $235 m from the $309 m of its predecessor. Domestically at least, both franchises would be hard pressed to continue.

It might still do (close to) $200m DOM, which is not disastrous.

Pirates surely isn't doing as great domestically still that's fourth installment whereas KFP has its second installment. If you take is accordance Pirates is doing much better than KFP.

If you compare first 5 days than KFP2 ($68.2m) doesn't look that bad compared to KFP1 ($72.6m)...

4 of the first 5-days of KFP2 were a holiday weekend and secondly it was in 3D and still managed to make less. That alone is a huge drop in admissions.

Re: KUNG FU PANDA 2: The Kaboom Of Doom (INTL.)
Disastrous is too strong a word for KPF2's domestic performance. In fact, I expect the 5-day opening to be over $70m when Tuesday rolls around.
And the opening in China is not necessarily that much a surprise given how popular the first one was. Still, it's an insane number, especially considering it opened on Saturday and only had two days. $100m is well within reach.

Re: KUNG FU PANDA 2: The Kaboom Of Doom (INTL.)
China opening was massive, though i was personally thinking it'll gross more than $20m this weekend, same goes for Russia.
$600m is the floor for this though i don't think it'll hit $700m.

I was toiling with the idea that KFP 2 could triple its China gross. To actually see it performing at that level though is fantastic. Bodes well for HK later this summer.

Re: KUNG FU PANDA 2: The Kaboom Of Doom (INTL.)
Assume the market expands there 35% over the next three years:
KFP2: $100 m today.
If KFP3 pulls the same admissions, there is always a possibility that KFP3 could gross more than in the domestic market!

Latin America and Asia will support it for sure We've seen how it plays in Russia, which is pretty much a given. It'll be the other European countries which will be most interesting. I think it can do quite well in Germany, but may struggle comparatively in the other Western european countries.

If the movies does explode in European markets I can see it beating IA3's numbers....though that is unlikely at this point and Russia is generally very kind to American movies these days.

KFP2 took in another $40 million from 9,104 locations in 28 markets, boosting its international cume to $125 million and its worldwide total to $225.4 million. http://www.boxoffice.com/statistics/bo_ ... 2011-06-05

Re: KUNG FU PANDA 2: The Kaboom Of Doom (INTL.)
Definitely a very good number from just 28 markets considering 11 of its markets are already in 2nd weekend. With $125m already in OS, looks like $550m OS is a given. Next weekend it releases in a lot of markets which would definitely boost its total

Yeah, even though it is clearly underperforming domestically, it'll still easily get many more sequels, since it'll finish with $600+ million worldwide.

It already made huge money in China and some other countries in Asia but that doesn't add much to possible profit. Remember that Hollywood get only between 18-23% from China grosses. Panda dropped by 61% in Russia and it's quite likely that it won't outgross original in the key european markets.

I am doubting about key European countries too, but 500m overseas look reachable so far

Why?.Kung Fu Panda wasn´t so huge in Europe and with 3d(more strong in Europe than Usa),and Dollar depreciation ,even with a drop in attendance could make more money in Europe than the first movie.

In most countries Pirates grossed less and significantly below in admissions. Thor did mostly average numbers for summer blockbuster. Pretty much the same with Rio which was huge in Latin America.

Looks like this is turning out to be another Madagascar level franchise with slightly better overseas takings. Though not on Shrek or Ice Age levels unfortunately.
I still see $200m + $450m = $650m WW.

I am sure this will pass $450m OS total and make $500m or maybe $550m based on the legs ahead. It is already at $125m from 28 markets which means it has a potential to grow ahead.
