I like the trailer and think it has $400m breakout potential unless they choose to alienate the audience.
I trust Mangold though - great underrated director.

I just don’t think kids these days or anyone from Gen Z really cares about Indy.

Yeah they don’t. My kids aren’t interested other than the fact that it’s the same dude who plays Ham Solo.
That said, the film cam do well on the back of adults who grew up with the franchise. Much like Maverick.

I trust Mangold though - great underrated director. I came here to say that. Everything he does is fantastic. This will be better received than Indy 4 but perhaps not to the same boxoffice heights. Not sure Indy is the same boxoffice draw as he was 15 years ago. $250M - $275M a. 19 years passed between Indy 3 and Indy 4 b. 15 years passed between Indy 4 and Indy 5 (a) seems much longer than (b)

 Re: Indiana Jones 5 predictions
Yes, the gap between Last Crusade and that piece of shit in 2008 feels way bigger than the latter gap. I guess because when he came back in 2008 he was an old, old man. He's still an old, old man now, so the difference isn't as stark. Also the gap between 1989 and 2008 is when we were all growing up, and those years feel loooooooong due to the nature of passing time.

It's pretty crazy that 1977-2000 is the same as 2000-2023. The "superhero era" if it starts with Spiderman and X-Men has lasted a really long time historically.

I feel like a lot of pop culture has been stuck since the late 2000s. What major new franchise has emerged in the last five years? I can't think of a single one, they all seem to be reinventions or sequels of stuff that started a decade plus ago, from Marvel to Jurassic to Fast & Furious.

 Re: Indiana Jones 5 predictions
You're right. I was struggling to think of new franchises that made $150M+ when I looked back 7 years.
I think the biggest highlight has been premium horror directors like Jordan Peele and John Krasinski. A Quiet Place and Peele's movies have become franchises. The two IT movies also were a new franchise that felt removed from the original.
The only true other new one I could find was Sonic which had a nearly $200M gross with its last movie.
Horror and video games oddly feel so much fresher than populist fare these days despite being known to follow certain formulas. The big superhero movies have taken formulaic stories to the extreme that a horror movie feels fresh by comparison.

 Re: Indiana Jones 5 predictions
Yes - horror seems to be the freshest genre at the moment (even with follow-ups of decades old franchises - i.e., Scream).
Game adaptations are picking up steam at the BO (and TV) so that does look promising also.

 Re: Indiana Jones 5 predictions
There hasn't really been a HUGE new franchise on the level of Star Wars, MCU, Harry Potter, LOTR, Pirates, Shrek, Despicable Me etc etc in a while though. The same thing is happening in music, all the biggest artists right now got big 5+ years ago, whereas in the 90s and 2000s there would always be a handful of major breakout stars each year. Maybe it's COVID's fault, because the only thing that seems to be generating huge new properties is streaming TV shows like Wednesday and The Last of Us.

This will premiere at Cannes. Hopefully means it’s good. If not, people will know it’s bad for a month and a half before it opens.
