The director has confirmed that it will be R.

Too bad. The trailer didn't really indicate to me that an R would help. I'd still give it an opening above 30m though.

Was there any doubt? I can't imagine the film based on the trailer alone as being anything but "R".

Yeah, I figured it'd be a guaranteed R-rated film. And I'd be disappointed if it weren't.

Am I the only one underwhelmed by the trailer? This is after all, a video game horror film again. I think the trailers look terrible and the movie will be very average.
11.5/25

Whose idea was it to open against The Sentinel, the Michael Douglas film that is likely to open near 20 million? Just seems dumb to open against such high-profile competition.

Heh, it's like Sentinel is Superman or something. There has never been a Douglas movie that opened over 20m, plus it's two different audiences.
If I was in vegas i'd put all my money on Silent Hill to beat Sentinel that weekend, no question about it. The Interpreter with two much bigger stars opened to 22m on almost the same date, 20m aint happening unless it's got some fantastic marketing. Lets not forget Sony = Huge Theater Count, SH will probably have around a 500 theater advantage.

I wouldn't count on it having a theatre count advantage. Sony only gave Ultraviolet 2500 theatres, something The Sentinel should easily manage.

It will probably have anywhere from 2900-3300
Sony/Screen Gems always seem to give lower theater count then just Sony, Violet is Sony/Screen Gem
Either way it wont matter if they both have almost the same theater count, I dont see anyway Sentinel will be #1 for the week.

Even if The Sentinel makes $20 million opening weekend, which I doubt, Silent Hill will still win the weekend.

I don't think there is a chance in hell that Silent Hill makes anymore than 14 mill. 20 mill? What the hell is Silent Hill anyway? It's a video game right? I just don't see this film doing that well. It is rated R for one thing and it is a video game for another. I still say it makes just over 10 mill for the weekend.

Silent Hill looks like another Resident Evil instead of another Doom. Although Doom didn't do that bad (opening weekend, I mean), it didn't reach an audience outside of the fanbase, which Resident Evil did.
In Silent Hill's situation, it is based on a video game, so it'll attract the fanbase, but it also doesn't look like a normal video game adaptation, but moreso a regular horror film, and a damn good looking one as well.

It'll perform quite similar to Amityville Horror I think. It's got it's fanbase and from what I see unlike Doom and other shit videogame flicks this one actually has the fanbase sold, im sure theres tons of people that dont know anything about Silent Hill the game, but the trailer sells the movie really well so it'll get the general horrors fans out to see it aswell.

I actually feel the movie won't do *that* great. Not bad, but more along the lines of a 15 mil opening.

I think this film looks about as interesting as every other video game horror film. You guys might think it looks better but that might be because you are fans of the game. To me, there is no real name recognition except with the VG loonies. And to say this will make in the range of Hills Have Eyes and WASC is a bit optimistic. I think you are looking at an esoteric group of loonies who will see this but that's it.

I'm surprised a horror aficionado such as yourself is so put off by this film. I think it looks like one of the most promising horror films in years, and I'm not a big fan of the games. It looks like it has some of the most original and downright frightening imagery since the original Hellraiser. Plus, the director has a pretty solid horror track record with Brotherhood Of The Wolf and Necronomicon. I'm excited.

I just don't think Silent Hill has that big of a Fanbase or pop culture notority, I mean say Resident Evil to an average person and they will know what you are talking about. I'll bet that "Stay Alive" will have a bigger opening and TBO. just because the plot is more marketable.
So I guess for Silent Hill:
5-7 Million Opening
15 Million TBO

Wow, alot of easy bets I can win. Anyone who wants to make a bet about this im all over it. Anything over 15m opening weekend = I win, anything under = You, lets see if anyone REALLY thinks this is gonna flop. If everyone wants to make a bet i'll do it with each one of you, i'll be making alot of people see shit films once I win this bet.

For the record, I've played Silent Hill once, for about 20 minutes. That's about it.
Also, the fact that this video game adaptation is even stirring up interest among people who don't like video game adaptations, even on this board, is encouraging for the box-office. I don't recall more than three people who really, really wanted to see Doom. A lot more people are looking forward to this, which is shocking, but it shows how effective the trailer is.

I think this can easily do AMITYVILLE/SAW ii numbers. Its the most anticipateed film to a lot of people on many popular internet sites. Comparing this to UV goes to show how much effort goes into peoples predictions these days.

MPAA Rating: R (for strong horror violence and gore, disturbing images and some language)
That sounds pretty graphic for a "psychological horror" film. Then again, I've heard some scene descriptions that sounded extremely brutal, so it's not surprising (Slight spoilers: Think "ripped into pieces", "skin flung off of body", and other pleasantries)
