The dumbest comment I've read on this site. Even a little racist/xenophobic IMHO.

By the way, Spirited away will stay in the history of cinema, not Frozen, and that's all that matters to me. Viva anime!

Don't see how Frozen won't stay in the history of cinema if it is the 3rd biggest original film of all time, just behind Avatar and Titanic, and in Japan, it will probably finish second or even first

Viva ANIMATION

I understand that Frozen is having great legs but I still cannot fathom that a movie is #1 for 12 straight weeks. It is a great movie but its definitely not THAT great IMO.

In a couple weeks it'll pretty much have had the best legs ever (known anyway), and it'll still have a lot left in the tank from there on, too. 12-consecutive weeks of more or less earning the same...

Its 12th weekend is down -0.6% from its opening weekend, and up 7.6% in admissions!

And it'll more than likely earn 16/17-consecutive weeks on top, too.

^ Yes its just insane how great the legs have been. I mean who saw this coming?
I am sure we will see more and more attempts and sing-along movies. Hopefully anime makers in Japan doesn't see this as a sign of general people's interest because I love the way Japanese anime are built today even if they are mostly too sappy for my taste specially towards series ending.

I actually love Spirited Away too much and even while its time that its record broken its still sad. I would have loved something closer to Spirited Away in terms of quality to overtake it (I mean the weeks at #1 record).

Thanks for the info!

Japanese record labels are still stubborn about the digital age, so it makes sense that only physical copies are included on the Oricon charts.

And yeah, "First Love" is never going to be topped. It's a shame Utada Hikaru has been on such an extended hiatus! I don't expect her to release albums every year with multiple singles like, say, Ayumi Hamasaki still mostly does, but it has been 6 years now since her last album... She'd surely have the record for most album sales for a female (and solo) artist ahead of Ayumi Hamasaki's 53 million if she was a bit more active.

Utada Hikaru's second album, "Distance" also holds the worldwide record for first week sales over 3 million copies, right?

Again with the (very) late reply. I'm also kinda sad that she's on hiatus. Utada Hikaru is literally my favorite singer/songwriter in the world. And yeah, I always say that if she released her albums more often, she would probably be the best selling female solo artist in Japan. She has 3 albums in the top 10 best-selling albums of all time in Japan!

After releasing her first best album in 2004, she was kinda in a slump regarding the sales of her singles, but managed to bounce back with Flavor of Life in 2007, and sold another million copies for what would be her last original album. Maybe the pressure from people's expectation made her decide to put her career on hold. She did debut at 15 years old! She was only 16 when her album broke the all time record sales. I hope she's back, but it looks like it won't be anytime soon. She just got married again like a week ago, and probably wants to enjoy her new life for a while, before deciding to continue her music career.

To stay on topic, what will happen to Frozen when the DVD comes out? Will it just disappear from the theaters even though it's probably still at #1? Or will it stay at some theaters and earn significant money, while not as big as before?

I really don't know since there isn't a precedent for this situation. It'll still be doing big numbers when the DVD is released next month, and may still be #1 as you said. I think it'll fall to 2nd or 3rd on the July 04-05 weekend though.

I doubt it's dropped from theaters completely, rather, it'll begin to lose them rapidly once the DVD drops, especially if it falls out of first place by then. Studio Ghibli's new film, as well as Pokemon, both open the weekend following the DVD release date though, so it may see a sharp drop then with the DVD out.

Nov 1st or Jan 1st, it makes no difference for The Expendables 3. They don't really do that well in Japan. China is the market now!

Awesome news about Frozen. It's a pity that a better film couldn't have topped Titanic, but ah well.

I may end up being wrong come tomorrow or Sunday, but Frozen appears to be heading for a sizable decline this weekend based on morning ticket sales. And by "sizable", I'm thinking 30/35% over the weekend. Most films tend to drop 40/50% coming off a discount weekend, though, so anything below 40% would still be great.

All the openers are difficult to pin down.

>Disney, it seems, is trying to capitalize on the Fast and Furious franchise by going quite wide with Need for Speed, releasing it in 303 theaters. The problem? Everyone knows it isn't Fast and Furious and ticket sales look dismal. And despite playing much wider than the other openers, I doubt it comes out on top among them and will be lucky if it reaches the Top 5.

>The Grand Budapest Hotel is however doing really well this morning, but its barely wide theater count of 100 will limit it. It looks to be the favorite among the weekend openers, and I believe it'll be the top debut this weekend in breakout fashion. This also seems like the perfect film for audiences in June (dead month) to enjoy, too, and I could see a multiplier approach 10.

>Persona 3 the Movie 2 is only being released in 35 theaters, but the first film opened above ¥60 million last November in just 26 theaters. A similar opening will be enough for a Top 10 spot.

>Pompeii is only receiving a mid-sized release in 199 theaters, and it has no recognizable names whatsoever either. It'll probably just make the Top 10, but I won't be shocked if it misses and lands in 11th/12th. Gaga, even if independent, is a strong distributor so I'm sure the advertising has been decent at least.

>2013 Police Story, while starring Jackie Chan, is also a smaller release debuting in 130 theaters. It'll be fighting for a spot in the Top 10.

How's Jackie Chan's popularity in Japan? Police Story 2013 is not a good film by any means.

Corpse, would you have any idea how much the average videocassette cost back in 1987?

Ooh, a Grand Budapest Hotel breakout would be quite exciting. One last hurrah for a fantastic WW run.

How much of a role do you think announcement of the July DVD release played in the much bigger drop.

He doesn't seem to be too popular. I can't name a single movie besides Rush Hour (¥1.2 billion) and Rush Hour 2 (¥1.7 billion) that he's starred in that earned more than ¥1 billion (~$10 million). There may be one or two more, but none of his films have been hits anyway.

The 70/80s may be a different story though.

Were VHS tapes still really expensive in the late 80s?

I know that a lot of VHS tapes were like $70/80+ in the 80s. I don't know much about pricing in Japan before the early/mid 90s, but I'm going to assume they were 2/3x higher than in the US, so... $140-210 would be a rough guesstimate from me.

A new release on DVD will generally set you back $50/60 in Japan today for comparison. Even those that have been in release for years (like those in the $5 bin at Wal-Marts) will cost you at least $20/25.
