Don't worry about that drop in the UK, there are barely any theatres open on Christmas day here. It's just not a done thing to go see a film, everyone is with family etc. I remember in 2005 Kong's second weekend, christmas eve was saturday, christmas day sunday and it dropped something rediculous like 80% that weekend, people wrote it off. Opening weekend was £6,944,740, second weekend £1,928,032. It went on to finish with about £30million. Dailies will be very strong for Avatar from here on. KK and Avatar shouldn't be brought up in the same sentence. KK was a major BO disappointment. Avatar has already beaten KK in North America and overseas i.e. worldwide

Was actually thinking it might do $150m+ but this is very good as well. The overseas total was more than I was expecting which means that it's mid-weeks were even better than original forecasts. Awesome.

It's already £6million up on KK at the same point in its run, the weather is picking up (it's been dreadful the last week here with most of the country having problems with snow) and possible oscar buzz... i'd say £40million is the absolute minimum. I'd guess £45-50million at the moment

AVATAR rose $375m from last Sunday to this Sunday - adding another $283m during worldwide vacations to reach $900m seems pretty conservative (especially if it is underestimated in the US and internationally), don'tyathink?

Updated with Avatar 2nd weekend estimates...
Next weekend it's going to extend the worldwide record by over $150m+ for sure. This is madness and there's nothing stopping this now from beating ROTK's OS and WW records for the decade.

That's because this movie is truly international. There is no mention of either country. Only Earth(which everyone can relate to) and Pandora. And the star of the film is not American! Omg Sam Worthington is so fucking hot. Even if he's Australian What's that suppose to mean Box,

To think what The Hobbit would do with 3D screens....LOL 3D is the way of the future folks, THIS is how grossers are going to grow....inflation and 3D combined....

That makes me wonder, what's the more lucrative midweek period, the next to last or the last week of the year? last wk, ROTK was massively front loaded. I expect avatar to post 4 18m+ days if the 1998 pattern continues to stick and the film continues to play like a regular film instead of a front loaded mega blockbuster.

I think this weekend will play just as better....and don't forget Italy has still yet to open, add another $9m opening for that and $30m+ gross in the end for that country. Madness.

 Re: Avatar (INTL.)
BJ, i'm talking overseas. And ROTK was definitely not massively frontloaded. New Moon was massively frontloaded.
