I suspect Cameron will never again direct a "real" movie. It will always be motion capture and 3-D and so on and so forth. A once-great filmmaker lost in the digital bits.

To say that JC is responsible for 3D decline is a false statement.

His utter -faith- in this gimmick, as if it delivered him to the next level of filmmaking, is so grotesque. The fact there's this 20-page thread earnestly discussing the long-term viability (ha ha ha) of this bullshit is madness.

 Re: The 3D thread
Watch The Terminator or True Lies. Then watch Avatar.
See?
There's a line between a movie with a lot of special effects and a lot of special effects with a side of movie. And next up is Avatar 2. Then Avatar 3.
And, sure, Avatar was dazzling and shit in 2008, but it's morning now and we've all come down.

They're all special-effects heavy films that couldn't be done without the technology of their day. You're just griping about CGI. Cameron set the highest budget in history record with his last four films. There's a reason for that.

 Re: The 3D thread
So what if Cameron uses more money and latest technology for his movies? It is always good to explore new technology and try. If there are only drama movies in the industry without CGI it would be boring IMO. It is all part of evolution and if 3D (though not currently good or used well) leads to something even better in future then I guess the current overload of poor 3D is bearable

Similar to Lucas, I doubt he will ever return to slightly-scaled-down, flesh-and-blood movies. It'll always be "MOTION CAPTURE INNOVATION! NEW FRONTIERS OF 3-D! MORE CGI!" first, everything else second with Jim Cameron from here on out.

 Re: The 3D thread
Last film of James Cameron other than Avatar was Titanic which had much more "human factor" than any of the movies you mentioned. It's like you are penning the whole future based on Avatar which had more CGI's and I know that he will be making two sequels of Avatar but hey that was top grossing movie both domestically and overseas, and it was his dream project, you can't blame him to follow that.

Reducing the price eliminates this. Giving the technology true market penetration will require a price drop. Otherwise, 3D will be strictly reserved for IMAX and non-IMAX 3D will be completely obsolete within a year.

 Re: The 3D thread
It's certainly a very oft-told story, and sort of basic. But it's still a story. It's not like Transformers where the whole thing exists just to have shiny silver things cause explosions.
