It's been 10 years and now just 1 month until the release of the final installment. Let's take a step back into the past; beginning with November 2001.

2001 was a watershed year for Australian Box Office lead by two fantasy juggernauts. Philosopher's Stone as it's called here claimed the opening weekend (and screen count) record and was only the 2nd movie to open north of AU$9m (the other was Phantom Menace). It ruled at #1 for 4 straight weeks (blocking American Pie 2) until the release of another fantasy record breaker; FOTR opened over the Boxing Day frame. FOTR would go on to claim both the opening and yearly crowns with HP1 a close second. It was the first time two movies grossed more than $40m in one year (this is a feat which held until 2009 when 3 movies grossed more than $40m, more on that later). HP1 was the 4th largest movie of all-time at the end of the 2001 BO year, and is now 10th on the all-time charts.

2002 was fierce with Star Wars 2 claiming the opening weekend record (first to top $10m and $11m on opening). Spiderman opened a few weeks later and also passed HP1/FOTR's opening; becoming the 2nd to top $10m on opening. Those movies dominated the Winter Season here in Australia; grossing north of $30m. Emulating its release back in 2001, Chamber of Secrets notched the 2nd largest opening of all-time (behind only AOTC but just above Spiderman 1); however, experienced greater resistence in the form of Die Another Day which cut it short it's reign at the top to only 2 weeks. The attention however for the Summer Season was drawn towards the much anticipated release of TTT. While Chambers dropped slightly from Philosopher and failed to crack $40m total; TTT raised the opening bar to a mammoth $14m (a feat not surpassed for 7 years; and guessed which movie ended it...find out latter). TTT failed to top FOTR but still managed $46m (only $1m behind FOTR).

2004's HP3 had an appalling release date and remains to this day the lowest of the franchise in overall total ($33m). It had the misfortune of opening 1 week before the mother of all animated releases; Shrek 2. While HP3 had the lucrative Queen's Birthday long weekend (meaning Monday was a holiday) and claimed the 4th largest ever opening at $11.9m (topped only by TTT, ROTK and Matrix Reloaded) it was eaten alive by Shrek 2, down 66% in its 2nd weekend in the face of Shrek 2's $13.6m opening (2nd largest at the time). This was also the first time Potter failed to place inside the Top 2 for the Year (Meet the Fockers filled the void left by LOTRs).

2005's HP4 took the franchise back to winning ways, topping the year again (albeit very close battle with ROTS and Narnia, all within a $1m range at $35m). Goblet elevated the franchise above $12m opening and was the 5th largest opening at that time behind only TTT, ROTS, Shrek 2, ROTK. Goblet's 2 week run at the top was ended by King Kong.

2007 was a very strong year; with the Top 4 movies of the year topping $30m and all opening within the May-July portion. At the top was HP5 at $35.5m (the 3rd time a Potter release has risen to the top for the year), it beat out stiff comp from Shrek 3, Pirates 3 and Simpsons. HP5 delivered another franchise topping opening with $12.87m but was gazumped by Simpsons' surprising $13.2m opening over the regular 4-Day frame. HP5 had a 5-Day opening (it opened on Wednesday) and made $17m (so if you count that, it was the #1 opening all-time at the time).

2009's HP6 was the movie which ended TTT's $14.1m opening recordl; Prince made $14.33m (and this does not include the fact that it opened on a Wednesday and actually made $18.7m by the end of the weekend). It did drop quite quickly though, down 55%, then 53% subsequently however the huge opening allowed it to return the franchise to the $40m total range (8 years after HP1). HP6 ended the year #2 behind Avatar's $116m and fought off Transformers 2 (also topping $40m and was $150k behind HP6) and New Moon's $38m. HP and Transformers are back to do it again in 2011.

2010's HP7-1 continued the franchise legacy of having bigger and bigger openings. It hasn't faltered yet. HP6's opening record stood for only 4 months; topped by New Moon's $16.1m and while HP7-1 was close last November, it came up just short at $15.3m; however things are looking good for HP7-2 to finally knock it out of the park (well, at least until Breaking Dawn :funny: ). HP7-1 perforned just like HP6 and also delivered a $40m gross; a smidgen above HP6, not quite big enough to beat Toy Story 3 but still a strong second and the franchise's 2nd largest release to date.

All up, the 7 movies so far have delivered in excess of $250m. 3 Yearly Crowns (2001, 2005, 2007), 2 opening records (HP1 and HP6), all but 2 movies (HP1/2) outside of the Top 20 all-time openers list, no picture less than $33m and 3 above $40m (tieing LOTRs in terms of franchise). Can you get anything more consistent? Definately not in Australia.

HP7-2 has pretty much everything going for it. Unlike HP7-1 and the majority of other Potter releases, HP7-2 opens on a Wednesday and what is sure to be a mammoth screen count. This will mark only the 3rd time a Potter release has opened on Wednesday. It's yielded some massive 5-Day openings (HP5 and HP6 all grossed north of $17m) and this time around could well be the first time we hit $20m in 5-Days. I'm pretty confident here we'll see a record breaking opening frame (both 4-Days and 5-Days) and possibly an opening day record as well. ROTK's $5.268m opening day is still at the top followed closely by TTT's $5.23m. The only other movie to gross north of $5m on opening day is New Moon at $5m. HP6 came closes at $4.374m and HP5's $4.1m and HP7-1's $4m was valiant efforts. Let's see whether 3D can make a difference. It's only competition is Transformers 3 and Captain America, there's hardly any notable releases in between HP7-2 and those movies so should allow alot of breathing room. Total wise, expect north of $45m and i wouldn't rule out $50m; i'm pegging this at $48m at this point time (which will be $5m above HP1's $43m).

Ok, i'm just about certain now that the opening day record which has held for over 7 years will be crushed by HP7-2. The midnights are just too strong and you can really sense the buzz and demand now for the final release. It's also opening right in the middle of the school holiday season so expect massive 5-Day opening weekend.

I'm now predicting a base of at least AU$6.5m opening day with $7m now looking more likely. It will easily gross $20m in 5-days.

I wasn't too far off.... :funny:

Post Re: HARRY POTTER 7-2: Deathly Hallows (INTL.) - $43.6m Openi
Will 'Harry Potter' break B.O. records?

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118039927

From 3D to a series-high screen count, Warner Bros. has spared no expense in making "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" the franchise's biggest installment yet -- and audiences around the world are responding.

The question is: How much does a global response like that mean at the box office?

As of Thursday afternoon, "Part 2" had amassed north of $90 million worldwide, with opening day tallies overseas at $43.6 million -- bigger than any other "Potter" pic -- added to domestic advanced ticket sales approaching $50 million, of which about half is reported to come from 3,800 midnight screenings. Pic kicks off a massive worldwide rollout this weekend in every major overseas market except China, as well as today's Stateside launch at 4,375 playdates, including more than 3,000 3D runs -- an industry high.

For "Part 2," the sum of its parts points to a massive weekend haul, likely to surpass the first "Deathly Hallows" installment's $330.1 million global debut last November. "Deathly Hallows: Part 1" cumed $934 million globally, while "Order of the Phoenix" is the top grosser of the series with $939 million.

Domestically, "Part 2" certainly is primed to see the biggest midnight gross ever, previously set by last year's "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" with $30 million. The "Potter" pic could also potentially outstrip "New Moon's" $72 million opening-day record and the three-day weekend benchmark of $158 million set by "The Dark Knight" in 2008.

Whether "Part 2" will continue to break records will depend on several factors, including 3D and the film's Friday-to-Saturday drop.

As the first "Potter" pic to use 3D, Stateside fans in particular may not feel the need to see "Part 2" in 3D. Last weekend, Paramount's "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" gave some hope for Warner execs -- that pic earned 60% of its opening in 3D.

Overseas, "Part 2" is doing solidly with the format, with a share so far at 65%.

Australia reps the pic's biggest debut take so far with $7.5 million, followed by France, which saw its best-ever Wednesday bow with $7.1 million. Germany contributed $5.3 million for "Part 2," while Italy and Russia came in with $4.6 million and $4.1 million, respectively.

Comparing similar territories on opening day, "Part 2" beat "Part 1" by 82% and was 49% higher than the sixth "Potter" pic, "Half-Blood Prince." Not only that, "Part 2" also became the biggest opening day ever in eight of its debut territories, including Oz, where the film also earned the market's biggest-ever midnight gross.

Midnight magic should transfer Stateside, with approximately $25 million collected by noon Thursday, according to Warners. (Some exhibs were even planning to run 3 a.m. screenings today.)

"Part 2" also is welcome news for the industry since year-to-date box office totals are running behind last year by 7%.

Post Re: HARRY POTTER 7-2: Deathly Hallows (INTL.) - Record OD in
FRANCE - Opening Day

I don't have a complete list, though HP7-2 probably has the largest opening day in terms of US$ gross.

Harry Potter 7-2: DH - $7.1m (1195 – 67% 3D - Wed) – Wed Record
Spiderman 3 - $6.81m (€5.01m Tue - 778)
Harry Potter 5: OOTP - $5.9m (€4.3m - 920 TC/1060p)
Star Wars 3: ROTS - $5.6m (641,799 adms. - 938)
Pirates Of The Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest - $4.4m (693,023 adms.)
The Twilight Saga: New Moon - $4.26m (488,000 adms. - 751 TC)
Taxi 2 - $4,169,994 (831 TC)
Astérix At The Olympic Games (2008) - $4.1m (1078 TC)
Harry Potter 3: POA - $3.9m (545,574 adms. - Paris = 97.932 adms.)
Spiderman 2 - $3.4m (502,494 adms. - Paris = $771,915/ 112.197 adms. in 52 - 880 TC)*Bastille
Spiderman – 480,288 adms.
Astérix & Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre - $3,271,570 (450,000 adms. - 945 TC)
Pirates Of The Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides - $3.1m (€2.1m)
Men In Black 2 - $3,021,086 (795 TC)
Pirates Of The Caribbean 3: At World’s End - $3m (426,000 adms. - 783 TC)
Transformers 3: Dark Of The Moon - $3m (Wed + Tue p/v)
Lord Of The Rings: ROTK - $2,952,803 (456,044 adms. - 987sc)

Harry Potter 1: PS - $2,479,521 (342,985 adms. + 133,985 adms. p/v - 851 TC)

I do have the complete list in admissions. Surprisingly, HP7-1 is the lowest of the franchise. If we extrapolate using Transformers and Pirates 4's US$ vs. adms. ratio...we get an admissions take of around 740k to 790k....that would give it the record for the franchise (above OOTP's 720k) and would land around the Top 3 in terms of admissions.

I'll post the final chart when actuals come out...

1) Spiderman 3 - 804,345 adms. (Paris = 175,334 - 850 TC)
2) Taxi 2 - 801.922 adms. (Paris = 113,000 adms. - 831 TC)

Post Re: HARRY POTTER 7-2: Deathly Hallows (INTL.) - Record OD in
GERMANY - Oppening Day

Not sure what to make of this preview/opening day. Anyhew, if this was indeed an opening day (let's consider it as such) then it would probably be the 2nd largest of all-time in US$ behind only ROTS.

Star Wars 3: ROTS - $5.6m+ (705,348 adms. incl. $2.6m evening 8pm Wed p/v and midnights - 1182 TC)
Harry Potter 7-2: DH - $5.3m (77% 3D p/v - 1641 TC)
(T)Raumschiff Surprise: Periode 1 - ~$5m+ (625,000 adms.- (incl. 164,000 Wed-10pm in 700 TC - 900 TC)
Lord Of The Rings: ROTK - $4,815,001 (616,021 adms. - 916sc/1337 TC)
Spiderman 3 - $4.56m (€3.56m Tue)
Lord Of The Rings: TTT - $3,950,000 (613,462 adms. - 1226 TC)
Harry Potter 5: OOTP - $3.6m (€2.6m Wed - 1300p)
Lord Of The Rings: FOTR - $3.5m
The Da Vinci Code - $3.5m (270,000 adms. - 878 TC/1154p)
Star Wars 2: AOTC - $2.3m (611,406 adms. - 1038 TC)

ITALY - Oppening Day

Largest opening day of all-time it seems. Blockbusters do that much on opening weekend alone, this one looks like it'll at least obtain the foreign opening weekend record from Spiderman 3 at $14.9m+. The overall opening weekend record held by this year's Che Bella Giornata at $24.1m looks out of reach.

1) Harry Potter 7-2: DH – $4.6m (€3.2m – 57% 3D – 988 TC)
2) Spiderman 3 - $4.02m (€2.95m Tue - 900)
3) Harry Potter 6: HBP - $4m (Wed - €2.9m - 923)

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - €2.55m (638)
Harry Potter 5: OOTP - $3.1m (Wed - €2.3m/ 375,000 adms. - 837 TC)
Avatar - $3m (€2.1m
The Twilight Saga: New Moon - $2.7m (€1.83m Wed - 625 TC)
The Da Vinci Code - $2.6m (€2.03m - 910 TC)
Harry Potter 7-1: DH - $2.6m (€2m)
Life Is Beautiful - ?
Lord Of The Rings: ROTK - $1.9m (€1,215,871 - 730/1000+ prints)
Pirates Of The Caribbean 3: At World’s End - $1.9m
Iron Man - $1,741,061

Argentina OD (Thu): 144,214

Just going to check for some comparison, but that seems huge on first glance. First South America result I think.

EDIT: HBP's opening in Argentina:

Thu: 130,000
Fri: 100,000
Sat: 112,000
Sun: 106,000

OW: 439,572

This translated to $1,824,783, $4.15 per ticket. POTC4 opened to 505,000 for $3,133,009, $6.20 a ticket. DH2 will probably get around 450,000 with that OD, so an OW of around $2.8m.

INTERNATIONAL - Opening Day

It's Wednesday opening in 19 markets gives it the title of the 2nd largest opening day overseas of all-time. It's only behind HP6 which opened in more markets. The opening was $14.4m ahead of OOTP or 50%.

It also comfortably beat opening days from both Transformers 3 and Pirates 4. Looking good for a record breaking run...

Harry Potter 6: HBP - $45.8m (Wed - 33 territories)
Harry Potter 7: DH - $43.6m (Australia/France/Germany/Italy - 19 out of 59)
The Da Vinci Code - $43m (incl. some Wednesday openings)
Transformers 3: Dark Of The Moon - $36.6m ($32.5m Wed + $4.1m Tue p/v - France/Australia/Russia/HK)
Spiderman 3 - $29.2m (Tue - France/Germany/Italy/Japan/SKorea - 18 markets)
Harry Potter 5: OOTP - $29.2m (Wed - France/Germany/Italy/Spain/Australia/Holland/Brazil/SKorea)
Lord Of The Rings: ROTK - $23.5m (19 territories)
The Matrix: Revolutions - $18.8m (80c/107ter/10,013tc/18,013pc)
Pirates Of The Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides - $18.5m (10 - Australia/Russia/France)
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - $16.2m (Italy/Spain/Russia/Turkey - 21 markets - Wed)
Lord Of The Rings: TTT - $15.58m (14 territories)
War Of The Worlds - $13.35m (46 territories/4958 locations)
Pirates Of The Caribbean 3: At World’s End - $12.1m (13 territories - Wed)
Lord Of The Rings: FOTR - $11.5m (13 territories)

Post Re: HARRY POTTER 7-2: Deathly Hallows (INTL.) - $43.6m + $50
Deadline Hollywood is going crazy and even putting $180m Domestic Opening Weekend into the mix. If it does eventuate having $80m OD and $170m+ Opening Weekend....you can pretty much call $500m WW opening a huge possibility. WOW

POTTER FINALE PHENOM! $88+M Global As 'Harry Potter' Already Shattering Records

http://www.deadline.com/2011/07/final-h ... g-records/

THURSDAY 6:30 PM, 3RD UPDATE: My sources have the latest box office numbers for Warner Bros' Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Domestically, $45 million has been collected already in pre-sales for this opening North America weekend, including $27M for tonight's 3,000+ midnight screenings which could reach $40M alone. Internationally, $43.6 million has been added from the 24 of 59 countries where the franchise finale opened Wednesday. Another 19 nations debut the movie Thursday but that figure won't be available until tomorrow. By Friday, the film will playing in an additional 16 territories as well as in 4,575 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. What these numbers mean is that Warner Bros is on track to break its own Dark Knight domestic opening 3-day weekend record of $158M. Helped by Harry Potter - Part 2's higher 3D ticket prices, the new pic could reach $180M. "Midnights and Friday will be huge," a rival studio exec tells me. "The only question will be how front-loaded they are and where they end up. A lot of the international openings Wednesday were records so the total foreign will be huge as well."

Right now I'm told that advance sales numbers and midnight screening numbers are changing ever 1/2 hour. Theater owners are just starting to record and report tickets purchased for tonight. As of 4 PM, Warner Bros had 1,800 theaters reporting $27M, but 3,000 will be playing the movie starting midnight so many theaters have yet to provide numbers. And then there are the projected walk-ins. It's clear that this Harry Potter sign-off will set a midnight record, bigger than the previous record-holder Twilight Saga: Eclipse which scored $30M.

Another record to fall will be the biggest single day ever, set by Twilight Saga: New Moon with $72M. Warner Bros thinks it's possible for $40M midnights and $40M Friday for an $80M single best day. I'm told the big theater circuits like AMC and Regal have already sold out midnight screenings and are adding 3 AM showings. Some are even scheduling round-the-clock releasing all weekend. "People have just been coming out of the woodwork," a Warner Bros exec marveled to me. "What this really tells you is that our busines is alive and healthy and the old cliche is true: make good movies and they will show up."

$3.892 mln Thursday estimate in Russia. Dropped only by 5%. Apparently $8 mln in just 2 days.
With T3 multiplyer i will get around 18 mln 4 day and 22 mln 5 day. Despite low Thursday drop probably it will be more frontloaded so let's say $16-17 mln 4day and $20-21 mln 5day.

That's still awesome for Russia where it will rank inside the Top 5 largest openings ever.

The grosses so far have been fantastic.

Not surprising given that South Korea was its only major market that opened on Thursday. The rest were all middle/small markets.

That's very good, midnights obviously tipped it over the edge on Wednesday.

I wonder if it can beat POTC4 in Russia, POTC4 had pretty good legs for Russia.

Quite unlikely. Pirates had 31,4 mln 5day and Potter with the best possible scenario will hit 22mln 5day similar to T3. Still a very good increase over Part One.

If HP7-2 does the same as TDK during the day on opening, it could be looking at an opening day north of $95m    It may very well be the first movie EVER to gross $100m in just one day  wouldn't that be crazy

SOUTH KOREA - Opening Day

1) Transformers 3: Dark Of The Moon - $5m (Wed incl. Tue p/v)

Very good opening and up there with the best. A Top 10 opening looks in order...needs $16.5m+ to crack the Top 5. It may just do it.

Spiderman 3 - $3.46m (3.2bn Won - 617)
Die Hard 4: Live Free Or Die Hard - $3.1m
Harry Potter 7-2: DH - $3m (3.3bn Won Thu incl. p/v - 562)
D-War - $2.9m
Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen - $2,330,072 (Wed)
Iron Man 2 - $1.7m
Lord Of The Rings: ROTK - $1,684,240 (415)
Lord Of The Rings: FOTR - $1.44m
Harry Potter 5: OOTP - $1.3m (189,000 adms. - 542)
Harry Potter 6: HBP - $1.3m (502)

I think this will pass ROTK and become the third highest grosser of all-time worldwide. 400m domestic and 850m + overseas.
