 Re: The 3D thread
Quote: In 1926, Jack Warner, then head of Warner Bros studio, declared that talking films would never be a commercial success. Silent films, he argued, had an international appeal, a visual language that transcended the spoken word. They allowed the audience to invest their own meanings, imagine their own dialogue. No, the talkies would never take off. Quote: To say that the talkies revolutionised cinema would be an understatement. The ramifications impacted on the business side of the industry, the technical side and the artistic side. Sound cinema famously ended some careers and kick-started others. The irony is that, despite the fact that audiences seemingly couldn’t get enough of the new innovation, the early talkies are generally considered to be very poor, particularly compared to the heights of artistic merit reached in silent cinema during the late 1920s. Quote: The demise of the silent film was far more rapid than anyone could have predicted: the last mainstream silent movie was Points West, released by Universal in the late summer of 1929. Even so, it took a couple of years for the studios to fully commit themselves to recorded dialogue – considered by some to be a passing fad – rather than just recorded music.

 Re: The 3D thread
I think it's pretty clear already that 3D is nothing like Sound was. If it was Avatar's success would have led to every. single. movie being in 3D.
If you want to remain optimistic, stick with Color, which even after the massive success of Gone with the Wind was still used only for epics, musicals and animated films, and took 20-25 years to completely take over.

 Re: The 3D thread
LOL. Both sound and color found roots very early on. 3D has been here for decades already and it comes and goes. If it were the same case then I guess 3D would already be used continuously and it's obviously not. We will see if this era will change it.

 Re: The 3D thread
This time, 3D is here to stay, but certainly not on a 30-40 movies a year level...
My guess is overtime only 10-20 movies a year will go the 3D route, mostly big huge blockbusters. I'm not even sure that CGI animation will stay 3D in the long run...
It'll end up probably the same way as producers/directors asking themselves whether to do a movie in wide screen or CinemaScope...

 Re: The 3D thread
Good luck convincing theaters to replace their brand new digital projectors...
That ship has sailed. The future for film is digital, the same way it was for sound. It is more cost effective, easier to deal with (most film gets digitized in postproduction anyway), no wearing down and you'd be hardpressed to see the difference between it and analog.

 Re: The 3D thread
Not for long. The focus for innovation is on digital. Sooner or later you'll have to go digital for the best quality.

 Re: The 3D thread
Progress!!! An inventor has devised an inexpensive pair of glasses which will convert 3D movies to 2D! 2D-Glasses allow filmgoers to enjoy movies in glorious 2D, even when a proper 2D print is unavailable in their theatre. Of course, these are only a temporary fix since they darken the picture as much as 3D glasses, but they are a brilliant work around until 3D finally dies next year.

 Re: The 3D thread
Will anyone see any 3D films this summer assuming they had a choice?
I've sort of made up my mind to see everything in 2D already. Maybe Pirates 4/Kung Fu Panda 2 but that's about it.
I have no intention of seeing Thor, Captain America, Cars, Green Lantern and Transformers in 3D.
Last year I saw Alice, Dragon, Clash, Toy Story, Despicable Me, Shrek, Legend of the Guardians in 3D. Oh, almost forgot this year I saw Sanctum in 3D because my friend wanted to go see it, otherwise I wouldn't have seen it at all.

I'll probably also opt for 2D whenever there's a choice.

 Re: The 3D thread
I agree with all who have said they will only see films in 2D if there is a choice.
Unfortunately, I was compelled to see about half a dozen films in 3D last year because of lack of availability in my market (mostly because of my not having a chance to see them in the first couple weeks of their run).
Luckily, this should be the last year of this latest rise from the dead of this old 3D fad.

 Re: The 3D thread
First IMAX opened here. The ticket's aren't that expensive, student ticket is $9. I'm thinking of checking out Thor and Captain America in IMAX 3D...
But other than that, no 3D for me.

But other than that, no 3D for me. As a long time IMAX fan, I share your excitement in the opening of your first local IMAX theatre (unless it's a fake IMAX theatre). However, be aware that Thor and Captain America are not true IMAX 3D productions but rather blown up DMR upconverted copies of the original films. Quote: Some filmmakers, such as producer Frank Marshall, point out that DMR blowups are not comparable to films created directly in the 70 mm 15 perf IMAX format, and that directors Ron Howard and George Lucas expected better. They note that the decline of Cinerama coincided roughly with its replacement by a simpler, cheaper, technically inferior version, and view DMR with alarm. IMAX originally reserved the phrase "the IMAX experience" for true 70 mm productions, but now allows its use on DMR productions as well. - via wikiStill, you can't beat the sound systems in IMAX theatres.

 Re: The 3D thread
http://www.chud.com/36315/the-new-flesh ... reoscopic/A really cool article that approaches 3D from most every angle. I've been careful with selecting which films I will see in 3D. Sometimes I see something like The Green Hornet in 3D simply because it's the only option. But I might see Mars Needs Moms in large part for Zemeckis's ImageMovers fantastic track record with the medium. And while I'll avoid Thor 3D and some others, I'm actually very excited to see what auteurs like Martin Scorsese, Michael Bay, Steven Soderbergh, and Steven Spielberg do with 3D this year.

Well Bay did make one excellent film - - The Island - - so I guess there's gotta be some talent hidden in their somewhere.

I'm excited to see what Bay can do with 3D. A bit miffed that parts of the movie are post converted into 3D, though.

Did you guys hear about the new 2D glasses that convert a 3D film back into 2D? Could be useful for those people who get headaches from 3D.

 Re: The 3D thread
Don't want this thread to miss out on the good news! Joss Whedon's "Cabin in the Woods" no longer in 3D...yes! (via Harry Warden's Cinemania thread.) Quote: SDCC Joss Whedon said Cabin in the Woods is no longer going to be in 3D and no real release date until MGM situation is done Bradley Witherberry wrote: As predicted, the latest incarnation of the more than century old recurring 3D fad is dying out yet again. I'm sure it'll be back like clockwork in 30 years just like it always is (1890's, 1920's, 1950's, 1980's, 2010's) to suck in another generation with a couple of years of eye crossing BO squeezing exploitation, but until then... good riddance.
