Though admitted I kept looking back at 1998 to get an idea at the daily performance, so I could be waaay off on opening and legs.
The total I'm pretty confident in, though. About the same as King Kong and WALL-E while taking IMAX/3-D into account. predict a similar multiplier with an 90m+ opening and your scratching minimum potential.

First review from Germany: Rough translation: Even though the showdown is a bit too long, Cameron has produced a work of art - a mixture of fantasy, emotion and high standard. Filled with critical quotes of the Vietnam and Iraq war, this movie also works as pure entertainment - as an SF adventure for the popcorn cinema. This way or that way - it's worth it - especially the 3D version is simply an astonishing experience. At the end the spectators just want an avatar of their own. http://www.zdf.de/ZDFmediathek/beitrag/ ... kel-Avatar

Avatar's Marketing in Mexico is literally based on the line "From the Director of Titanic & Terminator" they show it at the beggining and the end of every Tv spot.

Re: The Avatar Prediction | Tracking Thread
The Guardian (guardedly) dances around the embargo and posts some basic impressions:
And there have been a lot of rumours. Rumours that the budget was double the stated amount, more like $500m. Rumours that the 3D effects were making people nauseous. Rumours that the film, two hours and 40 minutes long, was a complete car crash.
The Guardian can reveal that the last two are untrue. The film does not make you feel sick and it is not a disaster. All journalists watching the movie in Fox's Soho headquarters had to sign a form agreeing not to publish a review or even express a professional opinion online or in print before Monday.
So by saying Avatar was really much, much better than expected, that it looked amazing and that the story was gripping – if cheesy in many places – the Guardian is in technical breach of the agreement. It is not a breach, however, to report that other journalists leaving the screening were also positive: the terrible film that some had been anticipating had not materialised. It was good.

Re: The Avatar Prediction | Tracking Thread
Cinematical is tracking the tweets as people come out of their various screenings. It's near universal praise (there is one critic who seems to have a fairly mixed reaction). Quote: One critic who wished to remain anonymous for now: "Was not as thrilled by Avatar as my colleagues; eye-popping visuals, but story is Dances w/Wolves + District 9; I preferred District 9."
@petershall: "The AVATAR buzz is an understatement. That movie was unbelievable."
@dmann11: "Holy effing crap!!! Avatar was FREAKING AWESOME KICK ASS SWEET!!!!!"
@TheGate: "For the record 'Avatar' was worth the $400 million, and no it is not even remotely "vomit inducing".
@gholson: "Specacular. A visual feast and the new benchmark in cinematic world building."
@chasewhale: "Just finished AVATAR. Special effects were top notch. The movie ran a little long for my likings but I liked it!"
@comingsoonnet" "Okay, about Avatar?.... WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW! Unbelievable... amazing."
@MikePereira21: Was blown away by Avatar! For 150 minutes, I was a kid again. Thank you James Cameron! BTW, the groundbreaking 3D was mindblowing."
@rejects: "I'm not supposed to talk about Avatar... That said, it was a spectacular experience. Like nothing I've seen before."

The first trade paper review for real: Bottom Line: A titanic entertainment -- movie magic is back! A dozen years later, James Cameron has proven his point: He is king of the world.
As commander-in-chief of an army of visual-effects technicians, creature designers, motion-capture mavens, stunt performers, dancers, actors and music and sound magicians, he brings science-fiction movies into the 21st century with the jaw-dropping wonder that is "Avatar"http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/fil ... 2868.story

With the Hollywood Reporter breaking the embargo, expect to see more publications follow suit. And I'm sure Fox won't care at all, given the positive buzz that's erupting from these screenings.

Awesome news. There are some negative reviews out there that I won't post. FUCK THEM. Anyways bad news is that Avatar theatre count is 3300+ http://www.boxofficemojo.com/counts/cha ... =51&p=.htmWTF? Fox really sucks. They probably want A&C2 to get more theatres than Avatar. I would have thought that estimated count would be 3900+ but this sucks. Ugh. lower those opening weekend prediction guys

There's only a limited amount of 3D theaters so this way a higher % of people will have the full experience, giving it better WOM. And 3,300 is plenty enough theaters to break 85 million even without considering the higher cost of 3D. oh common. this won't do more than 40M OW. Btw I am really looking forward to this movie. Will try to convince my friends to watch it but they are into more teenage shit like that vampire movie that came out a month ago

For all the naysayers:
As soon as THR posted the first official review, the site has crashed...
But probably the naysayers will have an explanation for that too...

Re: The Avatar Prediction | Tracking Thread
There is no way this will do less than $50m OW, it all depends on how much more than that it can do. I Am Legend seems the logical ceiling. So perhaps someway in between - mid to high $60m's?

Re: The Avatar Prediction | Tracking Thread
Darling Nikki: So much for the accuracy of tracking. There's obviously huge online curioisty about James Cameron's 3-D latest. The Hollywood Reporter's glowing early review of Avatar released just now has crashed the trade paper's website because of a Drudge Report pickup. The Times of London, KTLA's Sam Rubin, and other stellar reviews are pouring in and revving up Internet traffic... Avatar premiered in the UK today. Even though London critics had to sign away their firstborns promising not to review the film until Monday, their drooling reactions are starting to dribble onto the Internet especially via Twitter. I can't find anyone who seriously says Avatar stinks up the joint. Instead, many are quite effusive in their praise and think it's kickass spectacular. Generally, the critical reaction is far above average, which bodes well for the film's word of mouth. Then again, the British may not be familiar with Smurfs. http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/

Variety's review is online: Twelve years after "Titanic," which still stands as the all-time B.O. champ, Cameron delivers again with a film of universal appeal that just about everyone who ever goes to the movies will need to see.http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117941 ... id=31&cs=1

Re: The Avatar Prediction | Tracking Thread
I'm thinking that this will have a very strange box office run. I can see a very, very underwhelming opening weekend, but sensational legs. I could see this getting under $60 m opening weekend, but still do a 5.0 + multiplier perhaps and $300 m +. The market is just far too open and its got a lead in over the other films. The awareness isn't as high as it should be though this close to its release, but I think that will just lead to fantastic legs.
