 Re: The Good Dinosaur- WWW?
Nothing went wrong. It never looked that good and Pixar never had the faith in it that they do with most films - hence they dumped it in the same year as Inside Out. If anything, it will be a minor success if it gets to about $200m.

 Re: The Good Dinosaur- WWW?
"It's Pixar" isn't enough, zwackerm. Pixar is just one element, and if the others are not there, then a Pixar film will fail. It is simple, really. Just like how no one star can carry a movie anymore, Pixar cannot either. There always needs to be other elements.

I disagree that it looked generic. I think it looked magical. The thing with The lightning Bug's in The trailer was awesome.

 Re: The Good Dinosaur- WWW?
It looked generic, and worst of all it looked unfinished. The disconnect between the landscape and the characters was always off-putting.

zwackerm, Pixar is a brand that people expect new ideas are you really saying that dinosaurs in stone-age have never been done before? How was the storyline not looking generic here? What hook did you see here? Also lightning bugs/fireflies made this look MAGICAL???

Zero humor in the trailers.

I guess if Finding Nemo came out today, it would do similarly. Nothing too original or groundbreaking in a movie about fish swimming around.
Not like Brave was original or groundbreaking. It was Brother Bear meets every other Disney Princess movie.

 Re: The Good Dinosaur- WWW?
I'll see it next week when it releases here, but I must say, even if people have been saying it looks beautiful, the dinosaurs are ugly.
I'll see it in motion to make a final judgment, but unlike the character design in Rise of the Guardians, which most people didn't like either, they just look completely out of place in their environment, from the trailer.

 Re: The Good Dinosaur- WWW?
Yeah, which in my opinion could already be quite sensed from the trailer. Trailers where fine, first teaser was good, but the trailers never caught on like the Inside Out one did, even the Minions trailer was actually pretty funny. Good Dinosaur was really banking on it being Dinosaurs being interesting for kids, but parents just got other stuff to do these days, then take them to a film that doesn't look very impressive.

 Re: The Good Dinosaur- WWW?
Dinosaurs looked too much like Ice Age and stood out from the environments, and unlike most Pixar movies, there really isn't much here to appeal to audiences older than 10. Also, marketing needed humor to attract audiences.

 Re: The Good Dinosaur- WWW?
Post Up, Pixar's done 3 sequels, and had Brave/Inside Out has redeeming factors, but Dinosaur isn't helping them. 4 out of their next 5 movies are sequels leading into March 2020. So from 2010-2020, Pixar will have at best 3 original movies that were good? 7 sequels during that time! 1 sequel (Toy Story 2) from 1995-2009. Kind of sad actually. As great as Inside Out was, The Good Dinosaur combined with the over reliance on sequels is clearly raising red flags on Pixar. Clearly something is off here. They didn't "dump" Dinosaur either. They pushed it back a year to "improve it." 4/6 of their least attended films were also released in the last 4 years. Only 1 of their movies post Toy Story 3 adjusts to $285 m + (Inside Out). As much as The Good Dinosaur is disappointing, given the pattern Pixar has been on other than the Inside Out blip upward, they're clearly going through some growing pains of some sort...

They did "dump" it. Just because they tried to "improve" it, doesn't mean they didn't dump it. They released it because they didn't want to throw away all the work they had already done. Didn't they re-cast almost the entire cast halfway through production?

I don't think the slot where Tangled, Frozen, Toy Story 2 and Enchanted opened to great results is dumping.

 Re: The Good Dinosaur- WWW?
The spot they put it wasn't dumping it. The fact that they put it in the same year AFTER they released a critically acclaimed original film is "dumping" it. They put it there to try and squeeze every dime out of it because they knew what they had needed to be salvaged.

 Re: The Good Dinosaur- WWW?
Two Pixar releases in the same year stripped some of the event status. Don't think it was anything more than that. If IO didn't come out, this probably would have opened to $70m+ over 5 days.

What was the story in The Good Dinosaur's marketing? A boy and a dinosaur meet? This is something Pixar has never struggled with before

 Re: The Good Dinosaur- WWW?
A boy and a dinosaur meet and go on a journey. The old "journey" angle doesn't work anymore unless there is a reason for it. I think it may have been something like they are looking for someone's parent? But not 100% sure about that. Either way, it's Lord of the Rings/Finding Nemo territory, and after a summer that featured Inside Out, this simple premise isn't cutting it.

 Re: The Good Dinosaur- WWW?
No spin about this anymore. The Good Dinosaur is Pixar's first major disappointment. It will finish 40-50% below Pixar's previous worst performing film admissions wise, Cars 2.
Once Finding Dory does $450 m + though no one will care, but guess Dinosaurs aren't a given for box office gold after all!

I'll be honest, based on the trailer, it seemed to have everything annoying about a Pixar movie without the innovation.

 Re: The Good Dinosaur- WWW?
There is no more "nothing went wrong" etc.
It has not crossed $100m after FOUR weekends.
It will likely finish behind The Peanuts Movie now too.
Fucking awful performance. Can't say the movie didn't deserve to disappoint, but not to this extent.

People don't like good dinosaurs. Could you imagine how big a hit Jurassic park would be if triceratop poo was the main storyline
