Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
Hobbit will do well overseas only.
About CF 180 million was silly but 170 ish made sense based on buzz.
Sub THG is easily a box office shock and the reason has to be certain segments did not show up.

No no, not your box-office reasoning. Just you. The whole "I got duped" thing makes you sound stupid.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
lol true but that is likely the case to many males who never read or heard of the books in early 2012.
I watched the trailer and was like woh cool film based on a tournament about kids killing kids... I am there opening weekend!
It may sound stupid but there a few male friends who say THG opening weekend are not watching CF in theaters.
We will all watch it home for sure as still have some interest like the HP films and such.

It's shit because it didn't meet most people's OW expectations?
In my case, I enjoy this franchise, but I don't think it deserves to be one of the biggest out there

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
Nothing went wrong except that people's expectations were too high (including mine). The best comparison is Harry Potter. A pretty good split in gender for audience, and the sequel made a little less than the first, when the first blew open the box office and far exceeded expectations. It should hold up pretty well over the next few weeks because general WOM seems to be great and there is little direct competition for the audience until Hobbit.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
It boggles the mind how we are going to have an already 2 pages worth of a "What Went Wrong" topic, when this film in a worst case scenario will still end up in the top 3 for the year (likely top 2 if it gets to $370 m+). It will especially be silly if it wins the year!

If the gender split really is more even than the first one, then that makes its OD even more bizarre, IMO.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
There are three big factors that we have no idea how they are going to play out:
1) The holiday effect 2) Demographic shifts 3) Matinee/evening split: Matinees were underwhelming yesterday and dramatically picked up in the evening. Saturday matinees/evening should be interesting to see how CF behaves, as that will indicate potential Thanksgiving bumps.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
Due to holidays it might still come close to THG. The 1st one was huge - that's what went wrong.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
This could end up close to $800 m + worldwide and $400 m domestically and win the year potentially (Hunger Games 1 was #3 for its year).
If winning the year can be used in the same sentence as "what went wrong" its a weird parallel universe.

Females are more prone to frontloading on OW. More male interest suggests a bit more backloading. Safe Haven, The Heat, and the Vow were so frontloaded. I think it's a core, narrow audience that makes for frontloading, which is sometimes female.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
For those who are disappointed, what was you expectation for final gross? Really for this film anything between 350-450m total would be in the normal expected range.
And it's going to end up in that range. So nothing went wrong.

Re: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - What went wrong?
Nothing went wrong: 7th biggest opening day of all-time 3rd biggest opening Saturday of all-time and probably 6th biggest opening Sunday of all-time amounts probably to the 5th biggest opening weekend of all-time
