Catian Phillips is also an IMAX release? Weird, hm?

 Re: Weekend Estimates Oct 11-13
Everything outside of the Top 3 this weekend was mediocre to awful, but we still have the biggest 2nd weekend in October ever, and the 2nd biggest non-#1 opening in October in the same weekend. Very nice.

 Re: Weekend Estimates Oct 11-13
Gravity continues to obliterate even my most optimistic expectations. Word-of-mouth is terrific, yes, but a 21% second weekend drop after breaking out last weekend is just out of this world. I don't know that I buy the notion that it could push $400 million just yet (let's see how it holds into November before drawing such conclusions). Unless its holds are noticeably weaker from here on out, $300 million is happening. How it does when the big guns of November start to arrive (namely, Thor on the 8th) will determine its ceiling. But wherever it ends up... wow.
Captain Phillips had a very solid opening in the long shadow of Gravity. Sony did a very good job of selling the movie, and pushing it as a Tom Hanks vehicle helped as well, even if he hadn't had a big non-franchise hit in a while (the opening is a little bit ahead of The Terminal in terms of ticket sales). Between the strength of the reviews and the word-of-mouth, it should hang around for a while.
Cloudy 2 is taking advantage of the dry market for family audiences, and that will remain the case through at least the rest of the month. It will probably finish near $120 million, which isn't bad at all for an animated sequel to a movie that's four years old (and wasn't enormous itself).
Machete Kills bombed, but I'm not surprised. The first movie was trashy fun, but this one looked significantly less enjoyable, and it was difficult to shake the notion that it was being made as much as a publicity stunt as anything else (Charlie Sheen? Lady Gaga? Mel freaking Gibson? Really?).
Runner Runner had a weak hold, as expected.
Prisoners has finally gotten a solid hold, which is nice to see. But honestly, a total over $60 million has to be considered a victory for a tough drama that keeps a grim tone going for most of a two-and-a-half-hour running time.
Insidious Chapter 2 has mysteriously seen some good late legs after its earlier poor holds. It could conceivably hold decently against Carrie next weekend, if only because its PG-13 rating could allow it to be used as a ticket for sneaking in.
Rush still can't catch a break. At least it has already outgrossed Ron Howard's last prestige picture, Frost/Nixon.
Don Jon stabilized a little bit this weekend.

They would be stupid not to re-expand Gravity in January after Oscar noms come in.

I know it's becoming the standard to release the big October contender to DVD in January/February, but if ever there was a fall release to bring back to the big screen in January, Gravity is it.

Machete Kills will go down the same path as Runner Runner in terms of being overshadowed by Gravity. No one is going to pay attention to how badly Machete Kills bombed and instead will focus all the attention on Gravity's CRAZY hold.

It could still do well in theaters even though it is on Blu-ray. Argo did quite well after it was released.

^ That's true. Hugo isn't a bad comparison either, especially given the 3D connection.

Wow fro Gravity...superb hold.
Very good for CP as well.
I actually thought Machete Kills looked better than the first one trailer wise so I'd say this one bombed really hard but given the competition it had for Latino crowds recently its not a real surprise.

 Re: Weekend Estimates Oct 11-13
if gravity did these week-over-week holds from now...
50% - $191m 40% - $225m 35% - $249m 30% - $281m 25% - $326m 20% - $394m
somewhere between 25-30% seems most reasonable at the moment probably.

 Re: Weekend Estimates Oct 11-13
Webslinger gives a good weekend summary. Most people come on here and say "that did good, that did bad, that dropped big, that didn't" and basically only pointing out the obvious, but Webslinger relates performance to factors and compares them with history. This is just my shout out to say that I like it.
