Told ya. Leo is too big of a draw and the book is too famous for it to possibly open under SHUTTER ISLAND. I think Leo was the draw here, not the book. Many famous stories have opened poorly. Umm...

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
Warner's genius advertising should not be denied the credit it deserves. They perfectly cast the film as sexy, sophisticated, and stylish summer entertainment for older teens and adults. They conveyed a genuine sense of fun and romance in the trailers and television spots, helped by the expertly curated roster of original songs by top artists at their disposal.
Algren's point is not wrong. Literary status does not always translate into financial might. Consider the performance of Roman Polanski's Oliver Twist for an extreme example. There are many factors at play here, though I would not deny the novel's popularity helped.

My theory was right suburban and smaller centres, IM3 was ahead while GG was doing better in urban Big cities RT number (which are always accurate) Im3: 20.2-20.25 (70 million assured) GG: 17.5-19 million

Marvel's IRON MAN 3 topped the box office on Friday, scoring $19.5M. At $232M, it is now the highest grossing film of 2013. Quote: Exhibitor Relations @ERCboxoffice
THE GREAT GATSBY scored a decadent $19.4M on Friday. Expect a weekend debut of around $50M, ol' sport.

So close, but I knew it was unlikely after the beat-down IM3 put on Gatsby here.

 Re: Friday Numbers
You guys really need to start organizing daily number threads better. The latest numbers should always be indicated clearly in the first post, not lost somewhere in a sea of posts.

 Re: Friday Numbers
Iron Man 3 has a good shot a posting a 2nd wknd lower than its opening day BJs current estimate Fri: 19.76m +160% Sat: 29.65m +50% (very good, 2nd best to Thor for the Marvel made films) Sun: 21.35m -28% 2nd Wknd: 70.75m, IMO a 60% saturday increase is more than likely after that ridiculous saturday last wknd.

 Re: Friday Numbers
Amazing how close Gatsby and Iron Man are. I knew there was a lot of buzz for Gatsby lately but when the hell did it become such an event movie?

 Re: Friday Numbers
Based on historical trends.
IM3 should increase to around over 30 million today and GG should fall but not by too much.
