Re: The Dark Knight Rises - not a single "major" record
I find myself completely unable to mourn TDKR records when people got shot and killed watching a film at the same time I did, and I was able to see the whole film and they never will. I feel the need to take a week off from caring about box office one iota, and I know I'm not alone.
People will take some time off from the movie theater for awhile, and trickle back in a little at a time. It's a wound that needs time to heal, especially for TDKR specifically. There may be a permanent scar there - a few will simply not go back. There are many reasons to avoid the theater anyway; for some, it will be the final straw. The film will get the audience it deserves over time though.

Imo a lot of people will watch TDKR in the end through one way or another...

There were few people who were excited by positive publicity of the movie but just lost interest because of all the negative publicity. Some will not see it over theaters at all because of this very reason. The core fanbase (HUGE ONE AT THAT) is still seeing the film and re-watching it which is resulting in those comparatively big numbers.

It was bound to pretty clearly either get them or not.

Are you stating TDKR is performing exactly as it would have, if Aurora had not happened?

Perhaps it set a record for most effectively debunking the aphorism that all publicity is good publicity.

Are you stating TDKR is performing exactly as it would have, if Aurora had not happened? I'm saying there's no evidence to the contrary. What else could the Iron Man reference mean? By bigger I implied that 533m may have made audience retention more difficult. We have not seen enough megablockbuster runs to know definitively. There's of course no way to know exactly what TDKR would have made. I think that's pretty straightforward.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.
